hi, Iam a comic collector, I ve been live in malaysia for 2 and half years
one of thing that made me interested is the comic Industry.

can anyone mention good local malaysian comic?
this is what I know,
i always have this one when i was there : gempak comic magazine
the content is pretty simple, funny, less idealist (which is the good thing to understand what people want to read what not)
the one most famoust one I found there is this
yay, I still think kampung boy is masterpiece of malaysian comic.

The Kampung Boy comes to Frankfurt
Saturday October 25, 2008
Sambal on the side
By BRENDA BENEDICT
After a two-month hiatus, our columnist takes a break from unpacking boxes to meet Malaysia’s beloved Kampung Boy at the world’s biggest book fair.
The Kampung Boy at the Frankfurt Book Fair? That was too good an opportunity to miss!
When the Malaysian Consul General in Frankfurt, Saiful Azam Abdullah, first informed me of Lat’s imminent arrival in town, I immediately requested an interview.
Malaysian cartoonist Lat (Mohamed Nor Khalid) at the Frankfurt Book Fair on Oct 16.
After all, I have been a fan ever since I first read his Kampung Boy as a seven year-old. His illustrations never ceased to amuse me. And having spent the better part of my childhood growing up in a rubber plantation myself, I could relate to the adventures of the book’s tousle-haired protagonist with the toothy grin.
Even today, I can’t help giggling at the myriad characters who enliven his distinctive sketches of Malaysian life - the Chinese lady with the beehive and bat-wing glasses (supposedly inspired by his former English teacher, Mrs Moira Hew) or the bespectacled Indian Uncle with the middle parting and curly side burns. And of course, the distinctive “Lat noses” on famous personalities.
Datuk Mohamad Nor Khalid (as Lat is otherwise known) came to town a week ago to launch the German edition of his bestseller, Kampung Boy. The German version features an additional tagline - Ein Frechdachs aus Malaysia - which roughly translates to either a “rascal” or a “cheeky monkey” from Malaysia.
Either moniker suits him, I guess. The jolly cartoonist was in his element, having the large crowd in stitches at the presentation of his book at the 60th annual Frankfurt Book Fair (The world’s largest book fair)
Looking dapper in a black baju Melayu complete with songkok and samping, he began his presentation by explaining that he usually does not “go around wearing this costume”.
Flashing his famous smile as he flips through Maxz and Moritz. — AFP PHOTO
“Whenever I wear this outfit at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur, the security guards at the entrance would salute me thinking that I am the ex-president of Indonesia. I’d salute back,” he said to peals of laughter.
The history of Lat’s entry into the world of comics needs no introduction. Having had supportive parents, Lat’s love of drawing was nurtured early on.
“I’ve been reading comics ever since I was a kid. When I couldn’t read yet, I’d just look at the pictures,” explained the 57-year-old, whose favourite cartoonists include the Sri Lankan Aubrey Collette, who created Sun Tan, the Asian Sensation, and the German Wilhelm Busch, famous for his Max and Moritz comics.
When I later showed him a copy of my husband’s original Max and Moritz comic, he said, “I grew up with him. When I came to Germany in 1983, I had a chance to visit a museum in Munich and saw the original artwork. This is the old style of drawing, which is attractive and will not go out of date.”
To introduce his book, a slideshow featured highlights from the Kampung Boy. While it was a hilarious eye-opener for the uninitiated (with Lat providing side-splitting commentary), it was a walk down memory lane for the Malaysians present there.
Many were seen nodding vigorously whenever he described certain childhood activities. Although most of us have now spent a large portion of our lives in cities, almost all of us could recall, or at least relate to, eating coconut embryos as a treat, skinny-dipping in rivers or playing hide and seek with the other neighbourhood kids.
A collective “awww” went up when he mentioned that the original kampung house where he spent his childhood and which was also featured in the book was later sold to a relative in the 1960s.
His descriptions of a simpler life made me wonder if development had somewhat dulled our senses.
For instance, his class would sometimes convene at the headmaster’s house to listen to History lessons over the radio.
“When we heard the sound of the Portuguese attacking Malacca, we’d picture it in our heads. That probably also helped us with our imagination.”
“People were also more patient. If you had a favourite song, you’d have to wait patiently by the radio and listen to the request programme. My favourite song was It’s all in a Game by Cliff Richard. You hope that it would be this song but then the announcer would play another and you’d have to wait. You don’t get things you want immediately,” he explained.
How unlike today where the shuffle button on the iPod plays the song you want.
Ditto childhood games.
“The first game we played - like children anywhere else - was hide and seek. To play hide-and-seek, you needed friends. It’s not like now where kids play computer games alone. In my time, if you had no friends, who was going to look for you?”
And while we think nothing of the speed trains whizzing between cities, a simple bus ride into the city was a big deal then.
“To celebrate Raya, we sometimes used to go to Batu Gajah. At that time for RM1.70 we could tengok wayang (watch a movie) and have mee goreng. I used to wear seluar pendek (short pants) with a necktie!” he said, laughing at the memory.
With increasing numbers of people migrating to cities, does Lat feel that many are missing out on something special?
“There are two things here. Firstly, in many places, people don’t have a kampung anymore. Secondly, it was the environment of the kampung that mattered the most.
“When you remember your place of origin, there was a river with fish and a very good school with lots of pupils. Lots of laughter and friends meant the most. In those days, if you passed a particular exam it meant that you had to go to another town and you wondered about the friends that you would leave behind.”
And now these and other beloved childhood memories have been introduced to the people of “Bank-furt” (Frankfurt’s nickname playing on its financial capital status).
After presenting his book, Lat mingled easily with the crowd, flashing his trademark grin. He gamely signed copies of his book for fans and curious onlookers alike.
Among the autograph seekers was David Price-Hughes who spent his childhood in Kuala Lumpur.
“My parents really loved his books and we had several copies around. We still look at them and I have pictures of me with Lat T-shirts on. Looking at the pictures in the slideshow brings back memories of being in KL,” said the Briton who coincidentally was an exhibitor at the same book fair.
The Kampung Boy is now available in nine different languages and its far-reaching appeal has garnered its author yet another accolade. Last Monday, the German-Malaysian Society presented him an award for “Outstanding Contribution towards Promoting Cultural Understanding Between Malaysia and Germany”.
Yet Lat remains unfazed by all the fuss surrounding his 30-year-old book.
“There’s nothing spectacular about the book. It’s all just a recording of what happened daily. If you know the origins of your father or grandfather, you tend to appreciate it more.”
And this is probably why Lat has sealed his reputation not only as a talented artist but also a witty chronicler who warms the cockles of your heart.
> Brenda Benedict is a Malaysian living once again in Frankfurt. Her autographed copy of the Kampung Boy is now safely stored away from her book-chewing cats.

I must say that Malaysia should very proud of Lat achievement. Not only he produced great comic, he also spread kampung culture to rest of the world.
Bravo, Datuk.

3 Malaysian Cartoon as Animated Series on Astro!
KUALA TERENGGANU: Three locally-produced animation series will be shown on local television following the setting up of the e-Farm here.
Thirteen episodes each of Tiga Dara Pingitan, Aca and Atuk and Qabillah will be shown on Astro Prima, Astro Ceria and Astro Isis in April 2009. Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said said the quality of the animation series was high. “Our animators were trained by experts in Hollywood. I’m proud of them. Malaysians should support the series.
“I hope we can sell the series to South Korea to promote the state,” he said after chairing the weekly executive council meeting here yesterday.Ahmad said the state government had invested RM4.1 million in the three animated series, which were produced by Epict Eastern Pacific ICT, a government-owned subsidia-ry. The state government spent RM65,000 monthly on 45 Terengganu-born animators who graduated from e-Farm.

Konsep “ KOMIK MALAYSIA ”
2. Komik Malaysia tidak mem-promote nilai-nilai negatif, seperti pergaulan bebas, keganasan, jenayah ataupun anti-Tuhan, malah sebaliknya, yakni Komik Malaysia menolak itu semua.
3. Komik Malaysia mem-promote nilai-nilai "akhlak dan adab tinggi".

The Kampung Boy's world in music
NST Online » Local News 2009/05/03
Lat with fans at the Dewan Filharmonik Petronas at the premier of ‘Lat’s
Window to the World’ performance by the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra
on Friday night.
KUALA LUMPUR: It's been a long journey for the Kampung Boy, whose perspective on Malaysian life entertained and enthralled readers for decades.
Little did anyone expect the cultural icon would get the classical treatment -- courtesy of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.
Dubbed Lat's Window to the World, the three-day performance is a first in local cartoon history, a fact that was not lost on the man himself.
The performance was expertly-weaved by renowned screen and stage composer Carl Lewis, using the ingredients found in a storyline Lat developed specially for this collaboration, portraying big-city life through the eyes of the Kampung Boy.
Describing it as a "grand" performance, Lat, otherwise known as Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid, felt it was a tribute that reflected the great potential Malaysia, and South East Asia, had to offer the world.
"Its a Lat story. I made it as simple as possible, to show that whatever we do, stick to our identity and share it with the world," he said at the performance's premier on Friday.
Ever unassuming, Lat acknowledged that having a classical performance composed in his honour was a major milestone for him as a cartoonist, but reserved the credit for his fans.
"When people read my work, I feel honoured and appreciated. Malaysians have always been supportive of cartoonists' work. It just so happens that I'm one of the longest serving,"
Lewis leads the MPO as conductor in the three-day performance, which ends tonight.

PINKY : Adijins most-beloved original creation
COMICS can't protect you from the cold. Both figuratively and literally. Just ask Aad'i Salman Ayob Khan, known in the comics and design industry as Adijin. He has been in the Malaysian comics industry for eight years and is opening a new chapter in his life as he prepares to fly to Canada.
He only has one bag - a green backpack - which he has stuffed with T-shirts, underwear and a few pairs of pants.
Hardly enough gear to protect him from the cold Canadian weather, but a lot of space will be filled with comic books - something he loves more than being adequately prepared to fight off pneumonia and frostbite, perhaps
I'm not really doing comics for any amount of serious money. It's for satisfaction. - Adijin
"I do have a jacket," he said.
Adijin, celebrated award-winning Malaysian comics illustrator and graphic designer, will be flying off to Canada on Wednesday. He has landed a gig with the Canada-based, or rather Quebec-based, Volta Creations, Inc as a concept artist.
"I'm going there for the opportunity to work with different artists," said Adijin at his home in Cheras recently.
"Malaysia has a lot of talented people, but perhaps not enough organisations to get them together like in other countries. We also have a problem with diversity, when most people are doing the same kind of art."
Adijin says this about his drawings: "I think it's semi-realistic."
The current fad or popular style being put forth by many Malaysian artists, and the world of comics for that matter, is what is perceived as manga-based.
JITA DEWATA : Another one of Adijins attempts at capturing regional artistic flavour
"It's not wrong to draw anything in any way, but if there is a chance to see more varied forms and styles of art and illustrations, I would prefer to go and work with them. To learn, to grow. To experience and to explore."
Humble words from a man many consider as one of Malaysia's top artists. He recently won an award for Best Cover at the inaugural Anugerah Pekomik for his work on Liga Pendekar.
The problem with variety was acknowledged recently, in the Morning International Manga Competition, which started as the world's first full-scale International Manga Competition that was part of a celebration of the 25th anniversary of Morning magazine published by Kodansha.
Chief Judge Eijiro Shimada wrote: "When I read all the submitted works, what surprised me was that the submissions we received are not as diverse as works for other Japanese manga competitions, even though this is an international competition. Manga includes everything such as superhero comics and European comics, etc. Even if the style of the work looks different from manga, it is manga as long as the creator thinks it is manga. Even if the content is unusual for manga, it is manga as long as the readers think it is. In Japan, manga has developed that way."
Adijin will probably find what he is looking for in Quebec.
Just across the street from Volta's office is Ubisoft's Quebec branch.
"The Canadian Government has been very supportive of gaming companies. They have seed capital programmes and incubation incentives for the industry," he said.
"Not that the Malaysian Government is unsupportive. I know that some RM200,000 is available for comics alone and there are other grants. It's just ... I want to work with all these other artists. That's it."
LIGA PENDEKAR : Awarded Best Cover at Anugerah Pekomik 2009
Adijin is part of a list of illustrious illustrators such as Datuk Lat, Rejabhad, Mahathir Buang (Milx), Billy Tan, Tan Eng Huat, Sonny Liew, Baba Chuah, Sunder Raj, Kin Sun, Mohammad Yazid, Ong Chee Yang, Sheldon Goh, Alan Quah and others who over the years have established Malaysian creative talent overseas.
Adijin's previous work include the comics Silent Hill, Hack / Slash and Small Gods for Devil's Due Publishing and Image Comics as well as art for Warhammer 40,000.
Interestingly, Volta Creations mainly supplies game companies and advertising agencies. They don't really focus on comics.
"I'm not taking this job for the glamour, because it is not glamorous," said Adijin. "Doing comics is more glamorous than doing graphic design. There's no money in comics, but it's still glamorous. I won't be doing comics there. I'll be a concept artist.
"However, I will come back, perhaps when the visa expires. I still want to do comics. I don't want to let that go."
Though soft-spoken, Adijin can be very resilient and faithful to his choices. After taking the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia exams, he decided to immediately plunge into the world of Malaysian comics. Together with other artists, he founded Urban Comics - a self-published effort.
"It was during the time of the self-publishing explosion. People like Jeff Smith (Bone) and Dave Sim (Cerebus) all were the frontrunners in the States," he said. "It took a while for the wave to get here, but we eventually caught the ‘fever' in 2001. However, things fizzled out in 2003. I don't know why. I guess, in publishing, you can never really know what people want."
Having had to keep taking other jobs even while doing Urban Comics prepared Adijin for the comics magazine's eventual bust. He ended up doing advertising design work for companies such as Ogilvy and comics illustration work for some overseas studios.
Having already established himself, Adijin ploughed on and now has got a break with Volta.
"I'll be back," he said. "And I'll still do comics. After all, I'm not really doing comics for any amount of serious money. It's for satisfaction."
