I don't think they even try to be legit. That must be a good spoof. embarassedlaugh.gif

You mean they are not pro singer but just amateur? or just parody?

Why not KARA! bawling.gif but i like Taeny too! embarassedlaugh.gif

Kara ranked No.1 on Japanese Reco☆Hits! chart (maybe ringtone download chart?) with original Korean ver 'STEP'.
It is somewhat meaningful, isn't it?
(and i also heard that ringtone chart reflects popular awareness or popularity more well, not only depend on 'Fandom')

Like a parody. embarassedlaugh.gif

Cuteness, humor and witty mannerism contribute to Taeyeon's popularity but her charismatic and emotional singing as one of the lead singers in SNSD is a major appeal that has touched a wide age range of fans. Taeyeon covered many songs on radio shows back in 2008.

[Cover] Taeyeon "별" (Star) (Eng. sub)
[Cover] Taeyeon + Tiffany "Reflection" (This is one of Taeny's best covers.)
[Cover] Taeyeon + Seohyun "Because You Loved Me"
[Cover] Taeyeon + Jessica "원하고 원망하죠" (I want you and resent you)
[Cover] Taeyeon "O Holy Night"
[Cover] Taeyeon "Hush Hush" (Better video, less lively audio here.)
[Cover] Taeyeon & Tiffany "Lady Marmalade" (Taeny duo strikes again! Tiffany raps in this performance. The studio version is here.)
[Cover] Taeyeon "시간이 흐른뒤" (As Time Goes By)
[Cover] Taeyeon "애인 있어요" (I have a lover) (Eng. sub)

[2008][Live] Taeyeon "들리나요" (Can you hear me?) (Eng. sub)
[2008][Audio] Taeyeon "만약에" (If) (Eng. sub)
[2010][Audio] Taeyeon + The One "별처럼" (Like a star) (Eng. sub)
[2010][Audio] Taeyeon "사랑해요" (I love you) (Eng. sub)

She still looks like a kid offstage.

Two Korean idol band-music groups

FTISLAND - Like a Birds (remake of Byeon-Jinseob's 새들처럼 in 80's)

CNBlue - In My Head (i heard Jeong-Yonghwa who is leader of this band composed this song. i didn't know he is this good at composition, wow)

She said she cried when she first got "Gee" because she thought the song was lame. embarassedlaugh.gif She once openly complained to the Music Bank PD about her stage. Don't mess with Taengoo. icon_twisted.gif

Electronica duo Casker has made some soothing Bossa Nova style music. The girl is the one who was featured in Epik High's "Love Love Love".

My favorites.

Frankly, when i first got "Gee", i also thought the song was lame. and that one is still not my favorite.

SNSD's new album came out.
But, euh.. personally, i'm a little disappointed. the song is not that catch, and atmosphere or concept of the MV looks awkward to me. it's like they are trying to look global/Americanized or something. Teddy Riley? is he still regarded as a top producer?
I think SNSD is worthy of better song and MV concept. anyway i still hope their this one will succeed.

Expectations are too high. My random thoughts for "The Boys".

* Lollipop-waving "Kissing You" days are definitely gone.

* The arrangement of the song would instantly make a good theme for a musical.

* It is not an upbeat "hook" song this time although there are very repetitive parts. This is one of those tunes that might not be very catchy right off the bat but can grow on you.

* It has probably the slowest beat for their promotional dance number so far and accents on syllables are very tightly packed. Heavy.

* SNSD songs never had a rap part except for the special concert version of "Genie". This song broke it.

* The English version doesn't sound as awkward as I thought it would be even though only two of them speak fluent English. The flow is actually good.

* Choreography. I will have to see the dance version MV and their live stage.

If they remove some parts that remind me of some kinds of American cheerleading, maybe the song can grow on me.

Yeah, i also think English version is way better.

strongly agreed. the teaser is very good but the song is not as good. i still prefer the old style of "oh" and i'm afraid snsd might start to lose it.
styling and attire is great, choreography is not bad. their songs used to be much more catchier and i hope the next comeback is making to make up for this.

I think they picked the wrong sound for a U.S. debut, It sounds like a typical American pop/funk song while totally void of what sounds like SNSD. They should focus on what makes SNSD different from other groups. I think its a bad strategy, but I could be dead wrong.

Anyway, what's the worst that can happen? the song doesn't sell, that's all.
How many artist in the U.S. wrote songs after songs that didn't sell. Then after many years, get a top ten hit that turns their life around. It's not how many that bomb that matters, it's the one hit that counts.

With that, I hope they make the U.S. top ten charts.

Understandably, I have come across a lot of discontent from fans. They were teased with an anticipation for an epitome of catchiness but when it was finally revealed, they had to try to figure out the point of the song. embarassedlaugh.gif There are also many fans who didn't like the song at first but ended up liking it better after some replays. "The Boys" is a new attempt for SNSD but in American pop, it sounds rather "generic" although being generic at all means such type of songs has been moderately popular in the market with smart tweaks. I guess SM decided it is about time to do an experiment and they can afford it even if the response doesn't turn out as great as they hope for. They moved out of mannerism into another mannerism, so to speak. It's interesting why SM decided to work with Teddy Riley for this comeback. He is a has-been producer now but he must have a good network in the American industry. SM is not risking much with this US "debut" unlike JYP with Wonder Girls. As far as I know, they haven't allocated much resources for any offline promotion in the US. They only expanded their distribution channel working with Interscope. Anyway, I'd like to see their live stage first to get a better feel of what they are doing since dance pop isn't only about music.

From what I see on tv of the Korean singers, girl fans outnumber boy fans by a huge margin even for the girl bands. I see mainly girl fans on tv and the screams of the fans during the performances are girl screams. I think Korean girl bands are about girl power while being cute and sexy at the same time.

Yes, it could be a 'test the waters' trial. That would account for the generic sound - play it safe and see how the western audience relates to SNSD. Changes can be made and images can be adjusted for a second song. I think something like Gee placed in a CM would be a good start.

I didn't know WG were attempting to enter U.S. market. I know they performed on a talk show(CBS or NBC) but I thought that was all.

"The Boys" on Extra

Interscope opened a page for Girls' Generation under their artist list. I'm still not sure exactly what role they will play.
Girls' Generation

This week's live performances in all different outfits. The choreography is OK. I can't find signature moves. I think many fans want to see something like this "Into the new world" choreo again but I suppose choreographers also consider how to conserve stamina for performing 25+ songs at concerts as well as the song's tempo.

They also performed the Korean version of "Mr. Taxi". Cute outfits.

WG even has a residence in the US. They started their promotion as an opening act for Jonas Brothers' concerts in 2009. Recently, they began filming a show called "Wonder Girls at the Apollo" for Teen Nick TV. I wonder if they have lost more than they have gained so far investing so much into American promotion and not getting far. WG was more popular than SNSD back in 2007 when "Tell Me" was a big hit.

"The Boys" on Extra

This is probably the smartest move they made so far. Just play the song, without intro, on a popular show. People hear the music without bios associations. We can break down the American audience into three camps:

1) I'm interested in giving Kpop a try
2) I'm neutral on Kpop
3) I'm not interested in giving Kpop a try

For those in group 3, Someone might hear the song on Extra and think "that's a cool song" and look it up to find out it's a Korean group. The person thinks "Wow, I didn't know Kpop was like this" and a fan is born; turning someone from group 3 into a group 1 member. Later, a full debut will attract the attentions of people in group 1 and 2.

The investment might end up paying of for SNSD instead. Nick TV and The Disney Channel are powerful influences on the up coming generation. But for all their hard work, I just don't see WG gaining much fans in U.S. I see SNSD or more over KARA gaining fans better.

Related topic. Japan during the bubble(1980) put a Jpop IDOL duet on prime time American TV(CBS) called the "Pink Ladies and Jeff". The show was a total flop but I give the management kudos for trying. embarassedlaugh.gif
