The average age of Vietnamese youths having sexual intercourse has declined to just over 14 according to a recent survey by Vietnam's Association of Family Planning, local newspaper Tuoi Tre reported.

The survey results differ markedly from those of a survey done several years ago, which defined the age of sexual activity to be at 19.

The result is alarming for a developing country, yet it is not surprising, as teenagers nowadays have much easier access to movies, the Internet as well as available pornographic materials, the article said.


The age of sexually activity is likely to drop further in the future as today's youngsters are easily affected by the Internet and the fast-pace and complexities of modern life, it said.

The recent survey also found that the onset of puberty is now found to be 10 years of age, down from 13-14 years as found in the previous survey, the article said.

Sensitive issue

Yet sex remains a "sensitive" issue in Asian cultures and its discussion is often avoided among teens and their parents or teachers.

Parents should pay close attention to the sensitive issue to help orientate their teenagers' attitudes about sex at a young age, according to the Tuoi Tre article.

Sex Education should also be included at school as an extracurricular subject as early as the first grade, the article said.

I seriously doubt this study's result: Average age of young Viets who are promiscous is just over 14 years old!

I seriously doubt that the average age of Viets here in the liberal & over-sexed US is even that low to even talk about the far more conservative & communist environment of Vietnam. Virtually all of the Vietnamese teenagers in the US that I know, i.e. close and distant relatives, friends of family, etc., do NOT appear to be sexually active to me. So how can this be in conservative Vietnam?!?!

Vietnam has one of the lowest crime rates in the world now, particualarly for violent crime--quite a staggering accomplishment despite the poverty and utter chaos created by a century of war and the ensuing 20 year embargo. A recent survey of foreign businessmen put Vietnam as one of the safest places to do business in all of Asia. Crime, general chaos and/or social and cultural liberality is more or less goes hand in hand with promiscuity. A few months ago, CNN reported that the police chief in Danang (or Dalat?) was getting frustrated with the level of adultery going on in his jurisdiction that he was threatening to publish the names of adulterers! This should inform anyone with a half a brain that the crime rate is low and that this guy has a lot of free time on his hands. BTW, "adulterers" are by definition: full grown adults, not 14 y.o. children.

During the height of the war, it is estimated that South Vietnam alone, and only South Vietnam--not the communist North, had over 400,000 active prostitutes. This is a staggering percentage of young/younger women leading a "fallen" life. The drug dealing and pimping was of course rampant. This utter chaos of course followed the Viet diasporas throughout the world during the late 1980's and early 1990's. It is still present in Australian, German & Czech Viet communities where Viets face significant to severe discrimination. This is what war did to Vietnamese culture... The same is true of Cambodians, Laotians & Hmong. In Laos, there are NO Hmong youth gangs, but in America, it's still a serious problem. Laos is still a very dangerous place with huge problems of highway robbery and so on, in the rural areas. BUT THIS TOO IS A LEGACY OF THE WAR.

China during the Opium wars was probably just as bad: It is estimated that about 1/3 of the Chinese population were opium addicts of the opium that was forced upon them by the Brits & others. This translates to about 100 MILLION Chinese junkies around 1800. The crime rate must have been astronomical then. The Chinese later introduced opium addiction to America, which racist Americans all to quickly cursed them for it in total delusional ignorance of the fact that America itself too took part in this forced trade upon the Chinese and much of S.E. Asia in the first place: Whites imperialistically forced opium upon Asians, and then hypocritcally turned around & cursed them for said addiction to it. Go figure... The opium trade during this time is perhaps still the biggest drug dealing operation in the history of the world. The Chinese desparately wanted to ban opium right from the start, but were to divided and hence weak to do anything about it.

Moreover, Vietnam is a still mostly rural, where social and cultural norms are even more conservative.

Also, I doubt that conservative Hanoi and other cities in the central and northern regions of Vietnam are as "open" and westernized as the free-wheeling and capitalistic south.

How can promiscuity drop from 19 to 14 years of age in just a few years? It takes generations for such a profound change in social and cultural norms to occur, which is exactly what happened in the US and Europe during the 1960's, 70's, and 80's. It's hard for me to believe that the majority Vietnamese girls and young women are having unmmarried sex at 19 to even talk about 14!

Maybe the researchers were only interviewing deliquents from Saigon... Go figure.
