I didn't realise that there were any Malays outside Malaysia!!! Are these also Muslim? Hi I.M., I thought they must have been, due to the Javanese Buddhist/Hindu history, but I've never seen it written anywhere. I suppose there may still be ruins of temples somewhere, like in Java. Many thanks |

Many thanks Im filipino, but I guess you can also consider me malay. Because filipinos and malaysians both are malays. But the majority (91.5%) of filipino malays are Christian though like me, Im catholic. It seems like Malaysia is monopolizing the name malay. QUOTE (Fil-Am @ Sep 22 2004, 01:46 PM) filipinos and malaysians both are malays. So, it's more an ethnic name than a purely national one. Are the languages similar? |

Are the languages similar? Yeah its more of an ethnic name No I think Malaysia's language is Bahasa Malaysia? While the Philippines has Tagalog( Which has some spanish words in it). Example: In tagalog you call sandals, tsinelas.(spanish influence) Or say salamat po(native malay) to say thank-you in tagalog. This post has been edited by Fil-Am: Sep 22 2004, 01:07 PM |

QUOTE History of Manila
Manila began as the northern most Muslim sultanate at the mouth of the Pasig River along the shores of Manila Bay. The name came from the term maynilad, literally "there is nilad." Nilad is a white-flowered mangrove plant that grew in abundance in the area. During the time when Manila was ruled by Rajah Sulaiman, who held ties with the Brunei, Ternate and Sulu sultanates, a Spanish expedition led by Martin de Goiti arrived in Manila and conquered the settlement, eliminating the fledgeling sultanate. One year later, Miguel López de Legaspi went to the town and proclaimed the Philippine Islands for Spain and establishing the city of Manila as its capital. The enclave of Intramuros, at the southern banks of Pasig River was built to protect the Spanish colonizers. http://www.brainyencyclopedia.com/encyclop.../ma/manila.html |

I'd heard something about a great Malay Empire called Sri Vijaya:
"Powerful Malay kingdom that dominated the maritime trade of Southeast Asia for some 500 years. It arose at Palembang, Sumatra." Sounds fascinating. Was this a united (ethnic Malay) empire? T.N. |
