So, i've seen some topics, read some news, but I'm still not sure since my name consists of Pohan AND Simandjuntak with the D.
Googeling my exact name will result in pages about me and my brothers.
I know there is a lot of knowledge here, if you have the time, please help out

I've also been thinking about traveling to Indo this year but when I do I would really like to see something from my actual roots. Some travelhelp is also welcome.

I believe that your father's family originally come from North Sumatera, Indonesia....the "simandjuntak' with D family name is the same as Simanjuntak without D, this happened because of the difference of writing for the letter "J" was written "Dj" in the old time before 1972, since that time Indonesian Language use the difference spelling system (ejaan yg disempurnakan)...
hope this will be useful icon_smile.gif

Right, I've read about that in an old topic. Thanks for your reply Feby.

But my name is also Pohan (which is a different marga?) which could only mean one thing... right?

It's a shame my family doesn't know more, or tell more....

First of all, welcome to our forums, Nicolai!

After a bit of seaching, it seems that both Pohan and Simandjuntak are marga marga orang Batak, in other words both are surnames of Batak origin.

FYI, the Batak people originated from North Sumatra - you could find more info here:

Batak (Indonesia)

And this is a map of their original homeland:

Thanks all, very useful, I've been thinking about going to Indo, this is also helping me decide where.
I'm reading about Toba lake and such and I remenber something vaguely familiar about the houses.

I'm also wondering, Are there other namesakes? cause my father can't remember since he was brought to the Netherlands some fifty years ago. And now he's afraid of flying (at least he says so).

Hey, you're quite welcome, glad you found it useful.

You mentioned "namesakes", what do you mean by that, exactly?

People with the same combination of last names. "Pohan Simandjuntak"

With the old spelling I just land on me, my brothers, and some document which I can't translate.
With new spelling, I can find some people, but mostly pages in languages I cannot read or translate.

Oh, i see...well, yeah, i could see how the new spelling would've confused quite a few people who weren't exposed to it.

If you're in Facebook, it seemed that there are quite a few different people there with the same combination surname as yours, hopefully they might be able to help you find out more about your roots.

He is sure your name is from Batak origin, because only their names are like that.

Thanks,

I've been reading quite a lot lately, but I most of the seemingly interesting stuff needs translation.
I'm guessing starting off by learning the language is best.

Also good for when I go there.

You should go to the Batak area in Sumatera.

Its very beautiful and i personally think their houses are the most beautiful of Indonesia. Their women are beautiful too. icon_wink.gif
If its your thing, go to the Batak village where the females are the boss of the house. :P
The only thing i dont like from them, is their tribal dance. It is the dullest dance in the world.

Yea I've just been reading about some hotels near Toba Lake, the tabo cottages. Anyone have experience booking these?
There are a lot of good comments on the web.

You belongs to Marga Simanjuntak for sure.... Batak people are close-knitted society with complex relations amongs their marga (clans).
If you came from individualistic-liberal society, this close-knitted Batak familial relationship might be overwhelming, you should be prepared.

A little update on my search. I've been trying to find more info but it's very difficult.

My father was able to get a tarombo from my grandmothers side. (he told me that my grandmothers name is Dina Hutagaol, btw she is not so well, hope she recovers) She lived with her sister in Jakarta and I heard that the house is still there.

She is now married to van der Meulen, but that's her second marriage. her first marriage was not registered in the Tarombo because it was the Hutagaol Tarombo. Her first marriage should then have be with a Pohan Simandjuntak. But she doesn't want to share. I wonder what happened.
