Neutrogena Triple Moisture

This new hair-care extension from Neutrogena is something to get excited about, and that's saying something considering that most new hair-care products are not too thrilling (formulary-wise). What you will find here are some outstanding options for those with dry, coarse, or thick hair and limited (though still worthy) options for those with normal to fine or thin hair. All told, Neutrogena Triple Moisture is a wonderful addition to the existing Neutrogena hair-care line, and the prices are more than reasonable. [A more in-depth review of Neutrogena Triple Moisture from the May/June 2004 issue of my Cosmetics Counter Update newsletter may be purchased from my site.]

icon_redface.gif Triple Moisture Cream Lather Shampoo ($5.99 for 8.45 ounces) is a standard (but good) mildly conditioning shampoo that contains mostly water, detergent cleansing agents, salt, lather agent, plant oils, panthenol, thickener, detangling/film-forming agents, silicone, more plant oil, preservatives, emulsifier, and fragrance. This can be an excellent shampoo for normal to dry hair that is normal to slightly thick or coarse. The plant oils can build up with repeated use, so this is best alternated with a shampoo that does not contain conditioning agents. Neutrogena claims the various oils it contains (meadowfoam, almond, and olive) can penetrate various layers of the hair strand. However, these oils, like all oils, do not penetrate the hair shaft; instead, they coat the hair cuticle, which is still a good thing for dry hair.

icon_redface.gif Triple Moisture Daily Deep Conditioner ($5.99 for 8.45 ounces) claims to instantly detangle, add shine, improve manageability, and help tame frizzy hair--and it does deliver. This is an outstanding conditioner for dry or thick, coarse hair. It contains mostly water, silicone, thickeners, several detangling agents, antistatic agent, panthenol, plant oils, emollients, preservatives, fragrance, and mineral-derived coloring agents. This can, like any well-formulated conditioner, make hair feel smooth and soft all day.

icon_redface.gif Triple Moisture Healing Shine Serum ($6.99 for 1.8 ounces) is a silicone serum that is more fluid than most, but still does its job of smoothing frizzies, adding glossy shine, and leaving hair feeling like silk. It contains six forms of silicone (which can affect the product's texture, but have little impact on performance), plant oils, preservative, sunscreens, and fragrance. The sunscreen cannot shield hair from UV damage because there is no way to know whether the sunscreens hold up on hair after it is brushed and styled.

icon_redface.gif Triple Moisture Sheer Hydration Leave-in Foam ($6.99 for 6 ounces) is one of the new leave-in conditioner products that are brilliant options for fine or thin hair that is slightly dry. This water- and propellant-based foam has a weightless, non-sticky texture, but it does have smoothing and detangling properties courtesy of the silicone and plant oils it contains. The sunscreens cannot be relied on to protect hair from UV damage (which is why the FDA doesn't allow hair-care products to have an SPF rating). Sheer Hydration Leave-In Foam is great for those whose hair could benefit from conditioning agents-without added weight or a hint of greasiness.

Bobbi Brown
madgo.gif Extra SPF 25 Tinted Moisturizing Balm ($45) goes beyond moisturizing and straight to greasy. Although that can make this in-part avobenzone tinted moisturizer appropriate for very dry skin, it contains several problematic fragrant essential oils, including limonene, a strong skin irritant and sensitizer. This moisturizer has an intense fragrance that causes a tingling sensation on skin, and that isn't beneficial, it's irritating. How unfortunate, because the rest of the formula and all four of the shades are impressive.

Remede
icon_neutral.gif $$$Soft Focusing Lotion ($38 for 1 ounce) is a thin, intensely fragranced, silicone-based fluid that blends easily over the skin and dries to a matte-feel finish. The soft-focusing part comes from the shimmer added to this lotion, which Remede claims will decrease the appearance of large pores, disguise wrinkles, and soften fine lines. The irony here is that the shimmer absolutely does not minimize pores or wrinkles, it accentuates them. You can test this out yourself by applying a shimmery lotion or powder to one half of your face, leaving the other side bare. For unlined skin, that may be a nonissue--but this much shimmer won't make anyone think your wrinkles are in retreat. This isn't much different from the shimmer lotion options from Revlon's SkinLights collection, except that the Revlon products cost much less. If you have wrinkles and/or large pores you can still use shimmer; you just need to be careful about where and how you apply it. When used carefully for strategic highlighting, a touch of shimmer can be an attractive finishing touch on evening makeup.
