The Korean folk song "Arirang" is now being heard in New York's Times Square. An advertisement featuring the song, widely considered Korea's unofficial national anthem, has been appearing on an electronic billboard in Times Square, Manhattan, since Wednesday (local time) ahead of Korea's Liberation Day on Monday. The 30-second advert titled "Do you hear?" will be shown twice every hour, or about 1,500 times for a month, said the advertiser, Seo Kyoung-duk, a visiting professor at Sungshin Women's University. ![]() http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUvhsz2iQTw |

When was it ever in doubt.
Old Turkic soldier singing Arirang he learned during Korean war. 3:46 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBudcjpKC4M He also says "if you love Korean culture, you'll learn their language." Beautifully said. |

Thats right i remember that.... I have absolutely! and I mean absolutely nothing against China....But Arirang is Koreas music...there are no doubts about that. not this again...China registered it for korean minorities...so it's Korean music, everyone knows it, sigh I think the government really shouldn't have done that, because 1) most people don't give a damn about Arirang, I had never heard of this word before some1 brought it up, nor anyone is interested in it. 2) there're countries named Korea, 2 of them, why care about the Koreans in China, their ancestors migrated to China, now they are migrating back to SK, I can tell many years later, they will all be gone, so there is really no point keep them as Chinese minorities This post has been edited by ElapsePride: Aug 12 2011, 08:18 AM |

I think we strayed from the fact that they are playing Korea's Arirang here in the States.... Maybe OP thought that was pretty cool.... Please don't eat me^^

Please don't eat me^^ it's registered as Korean heritage, but under Chinese minority category as far as I know. 99.9999999999% of us don't care about Arirang a teeny tiny bit, the first time I saw the name I thought it's an appliance brand-_- hope Koreans in China can move faster back to SK...and China can go cancel such ridiculous registration, the Chinese government sometimes is like @%@!@#%$%$ DW, I just had dinner, I won't eat you. |

Yeah your right china did register it under the minority category, but Korea has not... which now that China has registered it, Korea will have plans to register it too... here is an article on that http://english.chosun.com/site/data/html_d...1062401056.html As for not caring about Arirang, You do look a little young... All the older generation Koreans i have known know Arirang, even a few younger than me... Are you too modern? |

I know that you are more open minded Chinese members in this forum and I am doing my best to avoid unnecessary political dispute on China with you. Although you said you had never heard of Arirang and most Chinese people don't care about it, unfortunately, that's not what I hear from other Chinese most of the time. The comments that I hear most often are like the one below: Nice Chinese Folk Song. Very popular in North East China. Copied by the koreans as their own. I don't have the exact statistic for that but I do see similar comments more often than what I had hoped for. I can say that the actual percentage is much higher than that. |

I can say that the actual percentage is much higher than that. it's not a real stats..i meant very lil ppl, in real life dont take netizen's opinion as a guideline...most likely they are young folks with too much energy. I'm not trying to convince you or anything, but hope you know what I mean. |

The truth is that it is a Korean created the song and it is part of Korean culture, but can a label really "own" a song? Do individuals own the song?
