10.31.2011 asian americans teens bullied more than any other group ![]() This probably won't come as a surprise, but it still sucks to hear... It's official: Asian Americans endure far more bulling at U.S. schools than members of any other ethnic group. When it comes to Asian Americans targetd for racial abuse and harassment, compared to other teens, the numbers aren't even close: Asian Americans most bullied in US schools: study. According to new survey data release over the weekend for the Bullying Prevention Summit, 54 percent of Asian American teenagers said they were bullied in the classroom -- a figure waaaaay above the percentages of other groups. And Asian Americans teens are apparently three times as likely to face bulling on the internet: The research, to be released on Saturday, found that 54 percent of Asian American teenagers said they were bullied in the classroom, sharply above the 31.3 percent of whites who reported being picked on. The figure was 38.4 percent for African Americans and 34.3 percent for Hispanics, a government researcher involved in the data analysis told AFP. He requested anonymity because the data has not been made public. The disparity was even more striking for cyber-bullying. Some 62 percent of Asian Americans reported online harassment once or twice a month, compared with 18.1 percent of whites. The researcher said more study was needed on why the problem is so severe among Asian Americans. The data comes from a 2009 survey supported by the US Justice Department and Education Department which interviewed some 6,500 students from ages 12 to 18. Asian Americans are generally defined as tracing ancestry to East Asia, the Indian subcontinent or the South Pacific. Again, not much of a surprise. There's certainly been a bigger public spotlight on bullying lately, but all the s#%t that when down at South Philadelphia High School proves that this kind of thing can happen for a long time without anyone giving a damn. And man, when you put numbers on it, those figures are staggering. Now, is anyone listening? Time to be more assertive. 4 days/wk 40mins workout builds confident n deters troubles. Its really a damn shame. I'm sure at least some of it comes from jealousy over many Asians being very high-achievers, having very high academic standards.
And then there is the perception of many Asians being nerdy and weak, especially to black and hispanic kids, usually being very aggressive, assertive, and not so good in academics, etc. |

1) This PROBABLY has something to do with the absurd and fairly recent practice of sometimes using "Asian" to refer to all Asians and sometimes using it to refer only to "Orientals". The high figure for "Asians" is PROBABLY due to a rise in bullying aimed at SOUTH Asians. In the minds of some kids, South Asians are associated with "terrorists," so there's a rise in bullying reported by "Asians".
2) That higher numbers are reported by all non-Whites is PROBABLY due to the fact that White kids are more likely to shrug off bullying. Non-White kids are more likely to make a big deal out of incidents of bullying. If there's a gap, it's probably not as big as the numbers suggest. |

im surprised its so prevalent. bullying based on race was rare where im from. theres a good reason why.
i remember going to class, the previous one was late and so everyone was standing outside. i had an arab classmate who was a serious muslim. so he had the religious clothing. a white kid walked up to him and told him to go "get out of his country". the moment he said that, 80% of my classmates and my self (all non white) looked at him. he gave an awkward laugh and told the arab guy he was just kidding. thats pretty much the only time i witnessed race bullying. its not easy to do because there are so many minority here. i use that term loosely, most of the time white are the minority. to be honest, i feel for these students. they arent doing anything wrong. people seem to blame them for not standing up for themselves enough or not being tough before other races. well its not their job. if these other races want to fight so bad go to war with Asian countries and see what happens. lets not even joke around. other than white, you know they are going to get destroyed easily. so why is acting tough towards asians in high school supposed to be impressive. |

They need to consider reclassifying South Asian Americans as they have as much to do with East Asians as Mexicans do, meaning nada. |

They need to consider reclassifying South Asian Americans as they have as much to do with East Asians as Mexicans do, meaning nada. The meanings also change where-ever you go. In the U.S when you say "Asian", you first think of East Asians. I've heard when you say "Asian" in the U.K, you think first of South Asians. East Asians there are referred to as "Orientals". And we have some things in common with our East Asian brethren, such as strict parents that give their kids very high academic pressure. Also, we conflict with our home culture and assimilating into the culture of the land we immigrate to, among other things. |

I recollect bullying quite often in elementary school because my name and the food I ate was 'different'. I'd get kids making slanty eyes at me, pretending to speak in chinese (ching chong bs). I finally got sick of it and beat the main bully in a game of Mercy and arm wrestling, and I would purposely aim for him in dodgeball. This solved the bullying from the one kid but it was on and off throughout elementary and stopped in junior high. I think it happend only once for me in highschool and everyone rolled their eyes at how immature it was to pick on me based on race alone. Oddly enough the main bully from highschool became much more gentle afterwards and became my friend later on. There are extreme cases that I've seen in highschool though; this Vietnamese friend of mine kept getting bullied because of his social awkwardness and actually committed suicide in college.

Asians have always been targets from bullies. It's only gotten worse since the rise of China and "yellow peril" spreading in the media.

I know a guy that walks around and goes to the same community college as my sister and has to replace his traditional head wear with some vague bandanna wrap. People just need to get educated. Looking like the way I do I get mistaken for everything considered non-white and have been labelled a terrorist by stupid general population as well. I can say I'm sick of it. Dude I know dark skinned Koreans and Chinese with less than the stereo-typical East Asian features that get called Mexican and Arab and other stuff... I'm sure some people in your family don't have stereotypical features as well, so this animosity is really against all us 'Muds'. I'm not advocating fighting back but don't back down and tell them it's not right. |
