It could be a wedding but it could be any celebration too. We need to see the bride's carriage to make sure it's the wedding lol.

It's called "nón chóp", a variation of nón lá. Actually, "nón lá" is a kind of nón chóp.

It is said that in the old time, Viet men wore "nón chóp" whereas as Viet women wore "nón quai thao"

Chóp means the peak. So nón chóp is the general word for various kinds of hat with a "peak" on the top.

Nón quai thao (also called "nón ba tầm") is this

But at some point in history, a specific kind of "peak hat" called "nón lá" switched from men to women and now you're seeing Viet women wearing it, and nón quai thao gradually disappeared (now people only use it in festivals and special occasions).

Lots of prefer áo dài because of its versatility. It can be traditional, modern, causal, formal, graceful, elegant, classy, or sexy...depending on your style preferences and where you wear it to.

Traditional look

Modern look

Formal look (for school, work, meeting...)

Casual look

I'm with you on this one.

I like Ao Tu Than more, cause I like girls in skirts.
If Ao Dai was worn with skirts I'd like it much more. I'm kinda bothered by those pants. It feels very Ao Ba Ba to me which
feels very pajama-ish. The long shirt is nice though.

Ao Dai looks good only when the long shirt is a different color from the pants. Like white Ao Dai with
black, red, or blue etc pants.

But for me, its either skirts, or tight pants. Iono why, I'm just not fond of those types of loose pants on women.

@Xigon regarding the hats.

I just finished watching Indochine and they did a very good job in the clothing during French colonial period.
I saw men wearing those types of hats you're talking about too. And there were also other types of hats
which I never really saw Vietnamese wearing until now. The Non La is also thicker and more quality.

They did a good job making you feel like you were in that time period. It's cool how the peasant
clothing for men resembled the Ao Tu Than also with the short outer shirt.

BTW, in the movie I didn't see anyone wearing those cheesy colorful Ao Tu Than. Their Ao Tu Than looked
normal. I wonder why and where that colorful Ao Tu Than came from.

the colorful ao tu than is a modern depiction. colors of ao tu than look very "eco", less bright if you watch those historical movies like indochine (as u watched), me thao and long thang cam gia ca.

i do love it too because it has many layers and it is flowy.

^^ btw. what is the man wearing? it cant be ao dai right? what is the bad and headdress called. was this the typical style of the nobles or commoner as well?

^^ this one looks more somewhat like ao dai?!

^^ this is the actual male ao dai. all quan ho singer wear this kind of dress.

^^ this one is for the mandarins?! 18the century.

Yeah, I liked the real peasant Ao Tu Than that I saw in Indochine and like the ones you shown. I'm
still waiting for how the upperclass Ao Tu Than looked.

This is what I meant when Long Thanh Cam Gia Ca shows the change in clothing through the change in dynasties.

FYI, only the last picture is an Ao Dai.

The other pictures he's wearing a robe styled shirt. I don't know what Vietnamese people called it.
As you can see in the 2nd and 3rd picture:

Those aren't Ao Dais. Like what I mentioned to Xigon earlier, that clothing is still actually
a robe styled dress, it's just the outer shirt has a circle collarless cut on top which reveals
the top of the robe underneath, which together looks overall like an Ao Dai.

This probably got simplified later and they probably saw this and just made both of
those (the robe underneath and the outer shirt on top) into one and became the modern Ao Dai.

Notice in the first photo he took out the outer shirt and you can see that he's wearing a plain
white robe styled shirt underneath. He's holding the outer shirt on his other hand:

Before he takes out the outer shirt:

After he takes it off:

can someone does an analyse on the clothing from the movie “Đêm hội Long trì”? it said that it takes place in the 18the century as well. somewhat earlier then long thanh cam gia ca but clothing style looks quite different to me.

The clothes look like 19th century to me. They're wearing Ao Dai with Ao Menh Phu.
The hats, however, look slightly different. Especially the red one the King's wearing.

I'll take áo dài over áo tứ thân anyday. You guys just discriminate against the Nguyen dynasty because they lost our country to the French. I don't like the Nguyen dynasty either. The only Nguyen king I'm okay with is Minh Mạng. But nonetheless I love áo dài. Áo tứ thân look too inconvenient and not as esthetically appealing as áo dài. Imagine riding a bicycle with áo tứ thân icon_rolleyes.gif Áo dài today is widely worn in our society - to school, to work, to ceremonies, celebrations, festivals etc. Áo tứ thân can't replace áo dài. It comes nowhere near áo dài in term of practicality and aesthetic appeal.

Áo tứ thân can look nice but it's nowhere as nice as áo dài.

And áo dài look better with pants. The pants emphasize the slenderness of the girl. The skirt would make it look kinda baggy, but would still be nice. In any case, the long flowing flaps of áo dài make it better than áo tứ thân

vs

We can use áo tứ thân for drama and áo dài for practical real life.
