some people who i dont know expect me to cium tangan when i see them, i go to shake their hand and then they sort of bend their hand and point to to my face expecting me to cium tangan.

When i take their hand lower it, simply shake it and give a polite nod and smile they get alittle annoyed but im only doing that for my older relatives, and expecially not some lady i dont know.  Talktohand.gif

Oh much older 60's, thats why i still gave her a smile. Im only used to cium tangan to my elders if i do know them and respect them. if a thirty or even a forty year old did that i'd be really stunned sure.gif Id be thinking who the hell do you think you are Talktohand.gif

Lol and there's also the 'kacian dech lo!' gesture! You make a zigzag shape going down with your index figure in the air, when someone's in trouble, spilled something, realized that he forgot something, got hurt etc etc and then say 'kacian dech lo!'. It means 'I feel sorry for you' or 'I pity you'. I like this gesture cuz I always use it on my cousin from the distance even if he can't hear me. biggthumpup.gif

Eww! I'd do the same. Recently during Eid, there seemed to be lots of kids that had been told by parents to cium other people's tangans when they salam. I felt really akwaward and just pulled mine away. Not aggressively of course, and always done with a smile. I don't want some kid to feel resentful doing what they are told.

I personally dislike this whole kesian dech loe gesture. This is not a sympathetic language. Stupid giggling schoolgirls and those banci gaul use this as a mockery. And they do this to anyone. I dont mind if this used amongs close friends, but when you see some old woman fall on the escalator and some banci gaul just give her this 'kesian dech loe' and loud enuff for peeps & the unfortunate lady to hear its just so thumbsdown.gif thumbsdown.gif thumbsdown.gif

Same here.....
I don't like to 'cium tangan' or receive one. icon_sad.gif

I do cium tangan not to every old people. Just elders I respect the most, My fave Guru, Guru ngaji, Orang Tua, and Mbah.
Even for Bibi/Aunty, Paman/Uncle, Ua (Pak De/Bu De). I don't do that.
Only very old peeps in my Gramps level....

And I don't like receive one, really awkward and unhealthy.
The kids who do cium tangan can get germs easily, and vice-versa. You don't want a running nose kids cium your hands, and end with mucus slime on your hand. Euwww.... Talktohand.gif

Well, I don't giggle when I do it and I use it only for my cousin. DAAMN I can't believe they actually do it on an old lady falling off an escalator. I guess it is rude to others but not to ppl you know really well though.

lol, so what do you do when they run up to you and do that? Walk away?? Oh yeah I just remember!! I have a Filipino friend who's like 21 now, but everytime his father enters the house, him and his brother walk up to the door and kiss his hand (like the way Indonesians do). Really strange..... Maybe we used to do that too back then every time our father comes home. confused.gif

Nowadays kids copy this kind of rude behaviour from all those sinetrons where the as a rule, except for the main actor/actress, all the other characters are all rude and unsympathetic.

Sinetrons are really bad influence on kids behaviour sure.gif

Do you watch some movies that got b!tchy rude black ghetto girls in it? See the way they talk to their rival 'You aint no Jlo b!tch!'. They forward their head and move it side to side while their index finger point on their rivals face making a zigzag motion.

Debbie Sahertian and those banci gaul Jakarta adopt this.
In 'kesian dech loe' they point and move the index finger like snake from the victim's forehead down to the stomach. This snake thing symbolyzed 'unlucky'. And while your doing this snake thing you said 'Kesian dech Loe' . Used to mock someone when you find them in trouble or have a bad time. It started like fun when used between friends, but it becoming more rude everytime. Looks b!tchy and uneducated.

Easily spoted in malls & clubs where immature giggling schoolgirls & banci gaul & real banci* hang out. You could also see it on gossip shows.

As Majapahitans said, thankfuly this gesture is less & less popular today.

*Note:
Banci could mean 2 things here : 1. Transvertite/transgender, 2. People who is (most likely newly/immaturely) really into something. So when you find your mates suddenly go out everynight to dance & drink you'll address them as banci dugem (Dunia Gemerlap = night life and all of its residue embarassedlaugh.gif )
