SES -I'm Your Girl was the first MV I saw - It made me interested in Kpop, About 2000~2001, I'm you girl MV came with a batch of Jpop videos I downloaded. That's how it started for me. No one can sing like Bada.

"just a Feeling" was their changing point from teen singers to adult singers. I love the dancing in the PV.

And lets not forget one of their best:
SES - Twilight Zone

@doggyji
Milk, ShinVi, Sugar, Jewelry, Dana, BabyVox. I loved them all. Specially milk. I bought their CD because I wanted to hear all the songs they made embarassedlaugh.gif Their center: Seo Hyun Jin was so beautiful. always hoped her carreer would take off but it never did.

another oldy but goody.
Dana -What is Love

Yeah, i also think she was much better than nowaday many K-pop singers.

It's hard to choose only one. but dare to say.. i guess.. maybe.. "Jo-YongPil"?

His concert in North-Korea (2005)

But if we talking about only idol pop singers, there were some rivals in each era

In early 90's, "Seo Taiji & Boys vs Hyun-JinYoung"

Seo Taiji & Boys - 환상속의 그대 (1992)

Hyun JinYoung - 흐린 기억속의 그대 (1992) <= i was a fan of Hyun JinYoung. his dancing was epic. but i can't find his vid that i like.

In late 90's, "H.O.T vs Sechs Kies"

H.O.T - 전사의 후예 (1996)

Sechs Kies - 예감 (1999) <= i don't like their other uproarious dance songs that much

And so on...
Actually it's more hard to choose only one when we talking about idol pop singer. because there were too many.
I guess 1990's K-pop scene was more Renaissance than 2000's one for Koreans.

Like chiuchimu said, i miss that 90's days,,
Here's some sad ballad ones that i like. it seems that i'm becoming sentimental these days.. lol

015B - 거리에서 (1990)

015B - 세월의 흔적 다버리고 (1993)

This one was OST of some popular drama.

Im JaeBum - 사랑보다 깊은상처 (1997)

i guess you're a 90ers fan. i am too btw. lol it was like the golden age. but yeah i noticed that in k-pop industry, there is a a lot of bands or groups artist and not many solo artists like boa, rain, gangster, etc... do korean prefer band over solo?

Hey, some of those are actually very good? Does anyone know a way to get those as ringback tones in the US? Because here we have services offering a choice of quite ok pop and rock songs (e.g. ect and so on), but of course their choice in K-Pop is limited. Would be nice to know how to do that. icon_smile.gif

One of the members in MILK just left the group after promoting their 1st album and SM just gave up on them. In fact, SNSD's debut song "Into the New World" was originally written for MILK.

Dana is still in CSJH but her last duo activity with Sunday didn't go anywhere. The song was bad. I don't know where SM is going with CSJH. icon_neutral.gif Dana is still in her mid 20s since her debut was at age 15.

I don't think there is any general preference regarding that. Such exterior trend always changes. Currently, the market for idol dance pop groups is saturated. Except for a few, idol groups are very fandom-dependent. Select few new groups will probably still become popular at the loss of other older groups' popularity. So many new groups debuted in 2011 but very few are doing reasonably well. A-Pink is probably the most successful one among the girl groups that debuted last year. They have Jung Eunji as their vocal carry.

[Cover] Jung Eunji "I Love You I Do"
[2011][Live] A-Pink "몰라요" (I don't know)

Solo singers have been more common for ballad and R&B although there are popular groups like Browneyed Soul, SG Wannabe, 2AM, Davichi and 4 Men. Ballad/R&B has been consistently popular in Korea. There are quite a few famous vocalists in their 40s. One of the most popular young solo singers right now is IU. Her "idolness" on TV shows is a big plus.

Good HQ Fancam on full screen mode without useless camera work is often better than TV.

[Fancam] IU "너랑 나" (You & I)

I don't know much but I think In Sooni is one of the best http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mx_5SAaRPc0

besides the music industry.. I like youtube's Maangchi!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wIVmPSotow
While seeing her vids, I have a simple question.
The word/name KIM. I can't help but to notice that there are a lot of korean dishes beginning with kim, but Kim is also a last name. What specific meaning do the word and name have?

I find songs like these Hello! Project-ish.

[2010][Live] Orange Caramel "Aing"
[2011][Fancam] Girls' Day "반짝반짝" (Twinkle twinkle) (Minah's so lively.)

Surname Kim has nothing to do with seaweed kim. They just happen to share the same sound. The hanja for surname Kim is 金, which means metal or gold. When it's not used as a surname, its sound changes to "keum/geum". Keum is also a surname with hanja 琴.

Random stuff: Taeyeon's custom in-ear monitor UE 5 Pro.

New prominent electronic bands Glen Check and Idiotape.

[2011][MV] Glen Check "Racket"
[2011][MV] Glen Check "Addicted"

[2010][MV] Idiotape "Even Floor"
[2010][MV] Idiotape "0815"

Nell's finally coming back soon. Highly anticipated.

Nell Teaser (I can tell this is gonna be a hit.)

That is H!P-ish embarassedlaugh.gif

It's weird how H!P is now associated with frilly maid-like outfits when in the beginning Morning Musume wore simple white t-shirt and red skirt. but it is the stereo type they self created over the years and I think they are paying the cost for it now - their ranking is nothing like a few years ago.

@Sumpit
Jpop & Kpop Idols from late 90 and early 2000 were similar in that the music was more pop-like and less dance oriented. The music was cuter back them for both and the debut age was young. Say 14~15 for Jpop and 15~16 for Kpop. Todays Kpop is very dance oriented and the style is sexy. today's Kpop girls are older say 19~22 though 15 or 16 is mixed in once in a while. Today's Jpop on the other hand hasn't changed in these respects. The Jpop Idol music today is more or less the same as the music back in the 90. What has changed is the importance of TV appearances. Good TV appearances are vital to an Idols popularity.

Here are Kpop and Jpop Idols from the same era.
Kpop
Sugar - Sweet Love

Milk - come to Me

BabyVox -Ya Ya Ya

FinKl - To my Boyfriend

Jewelry - Saranghae

ShinVi - Darling

Jpop
Speed - Little Dancer

Zone - Graduation

Morning Musume - Morning Coffee

Dream - Mov'in on

SweetS - Earthship

MI - Give me up

SNSD performed "The Boys" on CBS's "Late Show with David Letterman". I don't like the song that much (lyrics are a little weird, too) but they added some interesting tweaks. There were two dance breaks. Good performance besides the fact that the stage was too small. Tomorrow they will perform and talk with Kelly on ABC's "Live! with Kelly" so it will be more interesting.

They were probably at their peak around "Ren'ai Revolution 21" with Goto Maki. Their graduation system might be inevitable to continue the group for a long period of time but the level of popularity was bound to decline with their mannerism and graduation of popular members. Some people might like Tsunku's groups for his mannerism on the other hand.

well from korean artists, who they think is the best or one who they respect the most? maybe that's easier? even though it's subjective, but i take the people in industry selection.

Is it common thing that singer perform in that show? because like you said, that stage looks too small.
US market is so different culturally and racially, so i'm curious how their performance was viewed to ordinary American audiences.

Sunny looks 'BBeol-JJum' at 0:06 lol

I will come back at this when I have more time. It's gonna be a long post.

Yeah, musical guests are invited to perform at the very end of the show and David introduces their new singles and stuff. No interview usually.

They performed the standard version without a live band on Kelly today. It seems they got to do some sightseeing in NYC as well. What an experience.

Lame joke from an old man lol They look 12 years old? Taeyeon kinda does. embarassedlaugh.gif

What's interesting is that promotion in mainstream American media promotes them elsewhere, too. It was an efficient promotion during a short trip. They deserve a better song for the next single. Sophisticated lyrics would help, too. SM/Interscope must have so much resources but SM sometimes tries out weird stuff. The first thing to avoid IMO in their positioning is to be dubbed as the Asian version of PCD. People always want to compare the unknown with the familiar. PCD was basically Nicole and her backup dancers. SNSD should strengthen their more or less even distribution and harmony of vocals with Seohyun supporting weaker singers while dancing more fiercely in sync and use more metaphysical lyrical themes that even hipsters can digest. As an image-driven girl group, fashion is pretty important, too. Even all pitch black hair would be refreshing.

Their official American schedule and videos are updated on this page.

But Taeyeon is Ajumma-izing these days in her look lol (cute Ajumma though) i'm not the only one who think like that. i'm not bashing her, i guess that's because of her make-up or her expression/mood.

Yes, i guess that's power of American media. anyhow, US is center of world media culture or pop culture now in many meanings. and i heard that David Letterman show was his 30 years special one. so maybe that was counted too?

SNSD on Spain TV

SNSD on Ukraine TV

SNSD on Brazil TV

SNSD on France TV <= yep, i can somewhat understand his joke now by seeing this version vid

What's interesting for me is they consider/care one thing that SNSD is Korean. they said Korean word such as Gamsahamnida (Thank you) or Gamja (Potato). i would understand if this was happened in tv show of other country. but i thought US is extreme multiracial country that so many singers of the world participate in, so i guessed they wouldn't bother what country SNSD is from.

Younha's songs that i like

Younha - ほうき星 (Comet)

Younha - 기다리다 (Waiting)

Younha - 비밀번호 486 (Password 486)
