We never paint Indonesia with such a rosy picture, we know well all our ailments, but at least we are now FREE to talk about it out in the open in the noble hope it would make us a better nation. Reporter without Borders recently reported that Indonesia's press is among the freest in Asia- ahead of Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand or even the Philippines.

The point of the OP is to show you Malaysian another side of the story that would be almost impossible to hear within the mainstream Malaysian press.

Anwar will never become the leader of Malaysia. I didn't like him when he was a Deputy PM, he had many flaws and he did many things which Malaysians would never accept. Now he is one of the most vocal person in the opposition side, he had been "victimised" by the past government and he had no reserve to pinpoint the flaws and mistakes of present government which i think is good for the general people. A government without strong opposition is a weak one. Unfortunately this is happening now

I have no qualm whatsoever if indonesians adore this guy. However, make no mistake, he is a politician, albeit opportunist one. He wears different hats to different people. He plays to the audience very well. He will speak to you what you want to hear.

He was victimized by Dr M, that is true. He was and still an ambitious man. He tried to use Financial Crisis in 1997 to force Dr M into retirement, but failed in the process. At the end, Dr M used the entire govt machineries to kill him off.

Can he become PM? Chances are, very slim. Unless he returns to UMNO fold. Even that, it won't be easy.

Was he a clean DPM? I don't think so. Like Dr M, he surrounded himself with crony capitalists. Quite a number of people become millionaires overnight. So, in this respect, he is not much different.

In the event that he becomes PM, will he be so naive to listen to what indonesian has to say? Not that simple since national interest comes first. You have to understand that any leader will be surrounded by the establishments inside the government such as police, military etc.

As such, don't trust politician too much. However, i think he should be given to prove his worth. A good opposition is good for the country.

A good politician indeed is a good opportunist, he must cleverly seize the opportunity for his political advantage.
By telling Indonesians what we want to hear from a Malaysian politician (especially regarding his humanity approach on viewing Indonesian worker abuse in Malaysia icon_neutral.gif ), he reach out to his neighbour and gain huge popularity and set a "foothold" here, which means be friend and forming "political alliance" with his Indonesian politician counterparts.

In democracy image building and popularity is important, while on the other hand tyrant don't give a fuk of what people may think of him. Just continue to abusing his power. Indonesians have "weakspot" for political leaders that being abused by tyrant regime. Remember when Megawati Sukarnoputri win the sympathy from the people because in decades she was politically being abused by Suharto regime...? Also how we rejoiced when Corazon Aquino ascend to power in the Philippines, since we sympathize her suffering under Marcos regime. The very same as our sympathy to abused Anwar and Aung San Suu Kyi.

Indonesia (govt and people) indeed want a friendly and sympathic political leader to rule neighboring country. That's why we rejoice if Xanana Gusmao lead East Timor or when Paul Keating lead Australia, coz those two political leader were somehow has sympathetic and friendly view and policy towards Indonesia. From my perspective many Indonesian hope Anwar will succed to seize power in Malaysia (in democratic way ofcourse). But that's own Malaysian call, not us, we just "encourage" it from afar icon_wink.gif . Neighboring countries do have their own interest in regional politics. Probably the same as Malaysian who wouldn't want Indonesia to have a brave, charismatic, and agressive leader like Sukarno who dare to wage war during "Konfrontasi" era.

Majapahitan,

i enjoy reading your writtings and i definitely agree with what you have written.

As his ardent supporter, i knew him very well. Some of my relatives become millioaire overnights when he was DPM & Finance Minister. One became Chief Editor of national newspaper (can't give u newspaper's name) and some become high powered businessmen. That's the reality in malaysian politics. You can't run away from it. What i am trying to say is that he is no angel, but he is a better devil than the others.

He is close to indonesian politicians. Perhaps, he has business interest there as well. I knew that one of his nominees has business deals there. After all, JK financially supported his family when he was in prison.

IF you ask me to show his corruption records, i can't show you since all his business are are taken care by the nominees. The same thing with Dr M. They are 'clean'.

p/s can't tell u everything, the list is too long.

Did we're all no angel, embarassedlaugh.gif
But by trying to be one that really counts.

I agree with you, good 'devil' is better than corrupted 'angel' .
(here I've confused the concept of angel and devil.... laugh.gif ).

Anwar's is old news .... his political party is on the verge of dying given the state where his chief lieutenants abandoned him & the party on frequent basis nowadays.

Guess he just wants to reap points with his Indonesian allies. Given his 'reformasi' background, one can see his poltical manouvering.

Kick Andy (Metro TV talkshow), aired every Thursday 22.05 Western Indonesia Time and Sunday 15.05 Western Indonesia Time

The Lion from the Neighboring Country

"I didn't hold grudge against Mahathir. I've forgiven him" Anwar Ibrahim said. That statement is on the issue of the "suffer" he must endure during the reign of Prime Minister Mahathir Muhamad.

He came straight from Malaysia to appear in Kick Andy, Anwar tells whole thing that happened to him that time. That includes the accusation that he has committed immoral sexual conduct to sodomize his foster brother also his wife driver. The ex-Malaysian vice Prime Minister also tell the story about torture and abuse committed by Malaysian police during his arrest in prison.

"Mahatir get rid of me because I stand against his corruption practice. I was a vice PM back then, so naturally I'm aware of many dubious practice. That's was one of the reasons of why I was ousted," he said.
"If I want to play safe, I can just close my eyes and say nothing. For me its just one step away to be a Prime Minister. But my heart refuse to stay silence."

About the accusations that I've committed sodomy, that also one of Mahathir evil way to cast disgracer upon him. Another accusation is that he was accused to have an affair with the wife of one of his staff. "Those accusation was can never been proved. Even the accusor has withdrawed his charge." Anwar said at that time he was Mahatir favourite groomed to take his place as successor.

Anwar can not just closed his eyes and walk away about the monetary fraud and corruption that happen at that time, so he hit the street and demonstrate. He was arrested because of this. The official charge against him was; Anwar has perform "corruption" because he has threathen the witness to withdraw their accusations. At that time Mrs Anwar's driver (also his foster brother) has reported that Anwar has commited sodomy on him. Later he withdraw his accusations because he admitted that he was forced to make that accusation and file the report under torture by the officials.

The judge who handled the "corruption" case still insist on Anwar's guilty and to put the decree for this father of four children to endure 6 years in prison. When he was in prison, his wife Datin Wan Azzisah took over his struggle and declared Justice Party. "I'm very luck to have her as a wife, beautiful in both look and heart."

The fortune smile to Anwar when he was later put on the court of justice for sodomy case, the regime has changes. The new PM, Abdullah Badawi, clearly said that he will not meddling in court of justice matter. Finally Anwar being released.

I'm really grateful to Badawi, he's a good man. But somehow he's too weak, so at this time Malaysian economy is declining," claim this ex-financial minister.

During his youth Anwar has studied in Indonesia, that's why he admitted that he has emotional relationship with Indonesia. I've a lot of Indonesian friends; Fahmi Idris, Adi Sasono, Amin Rais, Adnan Buyung Nasution, Taufiq Ismail, and Rendra. "That's why some people didn't like me because they think I'm pro-Indonesia. I was accused as being unnationalistic and unpatriotic because often stood for Indonesian interest," he said.

One of the issue that often gain his criticism is the poor treatment and abuse of Indonesian workers by Malaysian authorities. "I often express my protest regarding poor treatment of TKI (Indonesian Worker). They often suffer torture. It has nothing to do with nationalism, I saw this issue from humanity perspective," he stated. This condition has gone too far these days. "This issue always draw my criticism, because if I, the ex well respected state official can be beaten and tortured, what would the fate of poor migrant worker...?" he said it concernly.

Thats why he determined to fix the condition and plan to run for Prime Minister position on next election. Anwar say that he will not afraid of any ruling party effort to stop him from reaching his goal. That's include the effort to speed up the election to 2008, a trick orchestrated so he can not compete in the election. That is because of Anwar 6 years sentence; Anwar political rights has being annulled. Since he was released in 2004, Malaysian law stated that Anwar can only active in Malaysian politics started on 2009, until then his political rights being annulled.

"I've determined to keep forward. I've planned a new strategy if the election is come early," he said. If his political rival used violence and dirty work to stop him, would his family would be ready to hold the risk for the second time? "They're ready, we've vowed, and I will keep on going."
