Hmm this IS so fustrating, in a way and hard to resolve! I think Indonesians in general tend to seperate people eg. bule, but not in a bad way at all. They love having people from other places and get a tad excited, therefore call out. lol i think the indonesian people are so naive, innocent and simply 'desooooo'! hahaha in such a nice way biggrin.gif i love it, and indonesia

back to the topc: i think everyone have their ugly sides, it's just that they don't know it's in them until the moment comes. anyone here can be racist, it's just that we don't realise it.

ok..to be honest..we have to face the fact that all the people always have racist side in their mind....indonesian can be said a bit racist although not all ( only the one with simple mind)...if Indonesian is not racist why there are still different status ?
WNIketurunan and WNI.....eventough the goverment said that it will be erased..there are no further movement...because of this status..it looks like there is a wide different between this 2 race...

everybody is different. different or not different one will always look for the differences. Discrimination does happen everwhere.
Read this:
On Sinar Harapan Daily, 12 October 2004. Vice President of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla, expressed the following remarks:
The Jakarta daily Sinar Harapan this week quoted Jusuf saying he was considering changes on lending policies that would lower the interest rates on loans to a group overwhelmingly comprised (by his own admission up to 95%) of indigenious Indonesian businessmen.
Jusuf claims that the policy will level the business playing field and reduce the amount of discrimination directed at the nation's tiny ethnic Chinese community.
When asked whether the policy was discriminatory, he replied: " Would you (Indonesian Chinese) choose to be discriminated or you prefer to be burned and hunted down?"

However, this topic can't have an end. Like I mentioned b4. Discriminatin does happen everywhere and to anybody. even at home.
It's acceptable for me, as long as long it's not a BLOODY one.

QUOTE(Garuda @ Jul 6 2004, 12:27 AM)

I don't know anywherelse but in France, people seem to have a positive vision to indonesian and think that the indonesian people has in general a great sense of hospitality and welcome, it even has become one of the main attractiveness for people who visit indonesia : the legendary kindness of the indonesians, the permanent smile on their face... I don't invent it !!
So you guy don't have the right to say that indonesia is the most racist nation in the world. No nation is.

What about South Africa just 20 years ago?

Tell us directly that Indonesia is not the most racist by pointing out another country which has more blatant discrimination laws against minorities. Please. Your honesty is greatly appreciated.

(Think about it) It doesn't matters if peoples are little bit racist deep in their heart, I think everyone DO HAVE some racial issues but it isn't a problems as long as it didn't reflect in their act however in Indonesia the worst part of the racial problem are the GOVERMENT, LEADERS they should not make racial statement.
remember when Indonesian Vice President Hamzah Haz said during election that when elected he will wipe out chinese-indonesian domination on economy in Indonesia that Indonesia Pribumi should dominate economically.. that's a shame as long as it's bussiness is legal who's on top shouldn't matters, and remember chinese-indonesian are patriotic too who's put Indonesian interest on top they fled only when feel threathen like when riots occurs on on May tragedy
and remember too that some members of Indonesian Independence Party are Indonesian-chinese, and they do struggle on Independence from Netherland and Japanese Invasion
but these fact are ruled out from Indonesia history lesson on school, in fact in education facility own by government they make sure that young pribumi see chinese-indonesian as some sort of parasite

not all of chinese-indonesian are "angel" during Netherland or Japanese occupation but there's a lot of pribumi traitors too even Indonesian second president Soeharto in fact join Indonesian Netherland Corps
when he is young.. this is caused of unsure and insecureness in that time

see wikipedia for "chinese indonesian" for further details

What I'm trying to say is goverment policies from comunist fear era till now are based on racist though
and that's should change... because when all indonesian-born race are fought and stand in one nation not based on race or religion Indonesian could be a great nation..

every ethnicity will protect their own ethnicity.. maybe this also one of the reason why the rasist could be.. but i think that people choose friends because they think they are suit each other.. no matter their race are.. icon_wink.gif

The race issue, it's a very tiring and pointless issue (not to say that I want to avoid the isssue, on the contrary, it must be dealt with head on. It is pointless in the sense that people seem to worry too much about race while it really is not something to be taken into for any considerations). There are racist remarks everywhere, I agree with that, due arrogance and ignorance. But to generalize an entire society is not solving the problem. Instead, it creates a breeding ground for more arrogance and ignorance. So, in conclusion, YES there are some racial problems in indonesia, but I DISAGREE with the idea that Indonesians are generally racist.

just an additional comment (somewhat irrelevant with the thread): I think racial distinction and classification will probably be pointless eventually (it's even vague now, like for example, when filling out forms in the US, there is usually a question about racial identitiy, now Middle Easterns are Asians but there is a different slot, and what about the mix? the is a place for 'other' but that just seem like they're some kind of alien species). We will inevitably continue to mix with one another and 'create' more diverse races. Humans were created with diversity so that they may learn from each other and create harmony on this Earth of ours.....just a thought....

i think Indonesian people are used to be having a racist mentality..because since the dutch invasion to our country, they try to make a class to differentiate indonesian people based on economic condition..

Well, it will be a very hard job to erase this kind of mentality..on the fact this ongoing situation is supported by ourself..start from now, let do the job from ourself first..maybe in the future...

Can i just say that Indo's are really great people ..most are very accepting, friendly and happy go lucky...( i still remember Jakarta in 1989 up to the riot time) i fondly look forward to go back on my yearly trips. the problem is...lack of education...and combine with the jet fuel, of propoganda, political infighting, groups that incite violence...what you get is really confused people who has grown to be so different from what they really are. why is Jakarta so bad ( comparatively speaking)? i think ppl in the villages are not able to get jobs in their desa...they come to city in hope to make money...they get to Jkt and realise it's actually very hard to get by in the big city. at the point of almost dying from hunger they decide they will steal rob, maybe initally to get by...eventually becomes a habit. the govt should tink of an initiative to set up industries in the desa and not only concentrate in big cities...( for those who said they have done so..i'll intro another part into the equation...'corruption"...if they are doing so..why are ppl still without jobs and coming to JKT and other big cities in drones???)

Indonesia is a very very rich country ( resource wise) it has the resources to become one of the most developed countries in the world..if managed corectly...but it couldn't be more than a pipe dream now...i wish i live to see indo great again..( maybe like the majapahit era??)

BTW i think i'm might be a bit off tangeant to this thread...oh well...the wandering mind strikes again..

:P
