This is another example when Japan acts like a jellyfish with no backbone. In the past since way back when, Japan sent fishermen to hunt down the seals living on and around DokDo (pronounced Doke-Doe) Island and it was the Korean fisherman who chased them away for fishing or "sealing" in their waters. The Koreans did not kill the seals and in fact they wanted to protect the mammals. This went on all through the Josun Dynasty until the early part of the 20th Century when Japan annexed Korea.
Since this was during the Axis Occupation there was little or no protest from the Korean fisherment and the Japanese enjoyed a free rein until they wiped out the poor animals from the island. Once the seals were gone, Japan had no interest in DokDo. Before the Occupation and after the Liberation, everyone knew DokDo is Korean, nobody argued. 2 small insignificant rocky islands really. Peaceful as the Japanese people nowadays claim to be. Let them be. After Japan lost their Empirial War, Korea was divided into 2 parts - thank you Japan. Soon the the Korean War broke out. MacArthur asked the Japanese government for a detailed map of Korea. Even that map that Japan provided shows DokDo and its sister island Eulung Do are Korean. No big surprise. Then in recent years natural resouces were discovered in the surrouding areas of DokDo. Suddenly Japan starts to claim DokDo as theirs. They lie that the claim went back to the Josun era. Other than the Axis Occupation which lasted 30 some years, Japan can not claim DokDo was theirs from a particular time period to another time period in history. They can not name the years. DokDo has ALWAYS been Korean. Geographically it is closer to Korea. No Ifs No Buts. This new DokDo claim does not go over the Koreans well because the majority did not forget or forgive Japan for the hideous war crimes and that Japan did so little to mend by means of compensation and apoligy. Somethig like a DokDo claim is just rekindling a fire if not a slap in the face. In the minds of the peace loving people of Japan, perhaps it shows their ever-so-reserved or more accurately hidden intend to expansion once again. If this is not true why did they then send some atheletes to London wearing uniforms bearing the Axis symbol of the Imperial Sun? ![]() Below is the Map of Korea published by the US Army Map Service - Corps of Engineers, the most reliable map source in the USA. It clealy shows DokDo as Korean, the smallest square avove the word "INSET." The original map is posted at no less than the Berkeley.edu site. ![]() This is the Map of Japan - shows the section closer to Korea. The 2 islands EulungDo and Dokdo are Korean according to this map. ![]() Original Korean Map at this link This is the PDF version and you can enlarge the map.
