Yes, it is very expensive to live in NYC.
I work for an investment bank and I can barely afford to live here.
And yes, you can get beat up if you are in the wrong part of the city.

it really depends on where you live.. i would say it's safe in most places.. places like east flatbush are not that safe.. even my friend who is black, over 6ft, and can bench like 400+ is scared to go home without getting a car service or taxi there at night. If u don't hang out into the wee hours of the night.. you're fine. Cost of living is definitely higher.. But rent is pretty cheap still in brooklyn and queens

not really. rent is sky rocketing here in brooklyn. you wont be able to live in one of the better neighborhoods without out shelling out serious cash for a hole in the wall.

she wants to move to brooklyn her and her bestfriend are moving there together and she was showing me some apts she was looking at which is pretty ridiculous! she showed me one that was 1k 400 sq ft..when her apt down here is like 900 sq ft and 750 a month..

as for the jobs are they pretty easy to get up there? i know they probably pay more since everything is expensive up there!

It really depends what kind of job she is looking for. Companies usually have a hiring freeze near the end of the year.

if she has a good job, its not expensive.

i live in the upper east of manhattan & i work there too.
this is a good neighborhood esp for an asian person.
my rent alone is about 1700 a month plus everything else.
make sure she has a doorman b/c thats super useful!
its not dangerous because i mean there's so many people here.
you just have to mind your own business. oh and tell her
to invest in an ipod if she doesn't have one already. icon_smile.gif
and tell her to get aquainted with the trains/buses b/c a car
around here is worthless. no place to park that kind of thing.
also if she gets her feelings hurt a lot, like she's sensitive,
nyc would not be the place for her. people here are mean &
don't really give a $hit.

she'll enjoy it. i have lived here for 3 months now and its great.
i love the atmosphere, the shopping areas, etc.

its a great place to live if you are career driven.

$1700/month for an apartment in Upper Eastside is a great deal. I pay $1650 in Queens.

I can attest to how expensive New York can be because I am a real estate broker in Manhattan. Young people have a hard time affording the basic rents here, so they often take roommates or move to surrounding areas.

Of course, there are enough wealthy people who always want to invest or take a vacation condo in the city, so I am lucky enough to always have people to work with.

Wonderful city to live in, you should know.
