QUOTE So I wanna ask do you think they protest out of lack of self control also? I am fine with the protest. If they have a problem this is certainly an acceptable thing to do. |

Well in case if you didn't notice , all these protests all boil down to the Japanese Government which is the source of the problem. This is the real issue here, don't let some kids who overreact take your focus away from the real issue . I am glad you know what is appropriate and not , I hope the Japanese government and these stupid kids learn that too.

If China is to be a leader in diplomacy and respected then actions like that should not be tolerated. Those actions, if left unchecked can affect foreign business and the overall growth in China.

Becoz it's more easier to say that in English. There is no Chinese translation for that.

QUOTE (damahu69 @ Apr 4 2005, 01:19 PM) thousands participated in demonstration but only a handful engaged in riots. perfectly normal. there are always mobs in a crowd, no need to get all worked up with that. if you want to engage in china bashing or self-laothing, just do it. but please don't use this incident as an excuse, since it cheapens those protesters who participated in their own will and with fullest sincere. they are also risking jail times. for those ignorant few who think China government staged this, let me tell you this: in China, the government doesn't like ANY protest for ANY cause. Since protestation itself amounts to a chellenge to the authority, the government considers any protest a threat that needs to be clamped down, and you know how a control freak China governmetn is. I read an article before which had an in-depth look on the anti-Japan protests and the supposed "conspiracy" behind it: Any protests staged in relation to domestic issues will attract troops and be clamped down in less time it took for the people to organise the demonstration. However, if the protests have nothing to do with internal problems, then it's perfectly fine. It's little wonder that the government allowed anti-Japanese and anti-U.S. protests to drag on for days before reeling them in and sending its PR team to do some damage control. One of the reasons why a big campaign was made to "discourage" anymore similar incidents was because the government wouldn't want those protests to violently blow up and turn the demonstrators' focus on other issues (i.e. CCP-related) as well. Those protests do serve a purpose though - it directs attention away from domestic issues and turns the focus on an external source (i.e. someone else is weathering the damages, not the CCP). So I guess the "control freak" that is the Chinese government only rears its head when it comes to Falun Gong, Tibet, or any other problem exclusive to China. Otherwise, the CCP probably won't bother itself too much when they're not caught at the other end of the flaming stick. In fact, they'll probably be the ones in front of the fire with a gigantic paper fan in hand... |

There were a bunch of arrests in Shanghai of the people who destroyed property. Ogumu's original point is moot.

To give you some perspectives:
QUOTE (jareth_chong @ Jul 7 2005, 02:42 PM) Japan thinks it is the Chinese government's fault for spreading anti-Japan propaganda. They could not have been more wrong. I have never been to China yet I probably hate Japanese as much as mainland Chinese do (i.e., my parents and grandparents were Nanyang Chinese in Malaysia and Singapore.) Chinese all over the world hate Japanese because our grandparents and parents kept telling us nighttime stories of the "old days", of how Japanese soldiers took pleasure in raping, torturing, carving open, and experimenting with Chinese people in World War II. I would imagine Korean parents and grandparents have been doing the same thing. That is what causes the anti-Japanese sentiment among Chinese and Koreans, and governments have very little if anything to do with it. QUOTE (jareth_chong @ Jul 7 2005, 03:19 AM) You probably haven't realized it, but the root cause of the recent surge of the anti-Japanese sentiment in China is... Taiwan! Chinese in China have always hated Japanese, but China had never had so much anti-Japanese protests and riots during the past 20 years or so. So why are we having so many protests and riots in one year? Well, the Chinese government decided that it would no longer suppress and control the anti-Japanese sentiment among its populace. The Chinese government decided that it would just take a "hand off" approach--when it knew darn well that any "hand off" approach was dangerous and, more likely than not, would lead to anti-Japanese heat waves. But why? To get even with Japan for (at least implicitly) breaking a 1972 treaty: China agreed to renounce any claim for war reparations from WWII against Japan, at least at the national and govermental level. China also implicitly agreed not to endorse any claim or lawsuit against Japan on the private, individual or organizational level. The terms are spelled out in The Joint Communique of the Government of Japan and the Government of the People's Republic of China, signed in Beijing on September 29, 1972. In exchange, Japan would recognize China over Taiwan. Since the UN and the international community already recognize China over Taiwan anyway, I think Japan has gotten one heck of a great deal out of the agreement. However, in early 2005, Japan announced it would join the US in supporting Taiwan's security. That does seem to be an implicit violation of the 1972 terms. (This does mightily piss off China--how come China always gets into rotten treaties and agreements??) I think that means China can now endorse individuals seeking war reparations from Japan. This is also why there has been a surge of anti-Japanese protests and demands for apologies in China in 2005. Hey, you broke the deal first. It's all fair play. Political payback is such a b!tch. QUOTE (jareth_chong @ Jul 7 2005, 02:30 PM) Yeah, Chinese have always hated Japanese since WWII. However, the PRC government has always kept a tight leash on the anti-Japanese sentiment to ensure that things do not get out-of-hand. Before 2005, while the Chinese have always hated Japanese, there was never a series of mass rioting against Japan.
If you have been paying attention to the coincidence of events, then you would have noticed that the PRC government let go of the leash at the same time Japan announced it would join the US in supporting Taiwan's security. It is quite obvious that it is a tit-for-tat political payback of PRC. This post has been edited by jareth_chong: Jul 7 2005, 03:03 PM |

this sort of attack happens everywhere around the globe. at least no one is physically hurt. in other cities like Darwin, where racism is high, asians especially international students, get abused physically and psychologically.
japan's whitewashing of history have reminded many people of the humiliation that the chinese faced during the the brutal invasion. the claim that the japanese soldiers didn't rape or murder civilians really offended the victims of the war. that's why there were riots at the beginning. it's funny to see how the japanese believe their civilisation is clean etc. but in reality, all civilisations on earth has done dirty things before unless they're not humans. it's also funny to see the japanese's interpretation of history, they should check out the western sources, and go home and do more research on chinese history. |

QUOTE Alot of young people in China have a strong resentment for Japanese , and also because they are growing more suspiscious of Japanese agenda to revert to military imperialism. I really do hope the hate ends because it will only lead to war , but this is really up to the fate of the two nations. why should you worry? it's not like china is going to lose. have you seen the pictures that desertfox posted in the PLA thread??? it's only a matter of time.... ok but seriously, i think i read from an unofficial source (yes, i said it's unofficial but it might still have some truth to it) that the japan's bushido code does not differentiate between regular war and war crimes.....can someone clarify on this? maybe that's why the japanese don't apologize because they see no reason to do so.... who knows... |
