not that it matters really that much at all but it seems like mestizo is also a cultural term for many folks

either native american genes are really strong or some mestizos aren't any more than 10% white (rather than half half), but the cultural reality in latin america allows a mestizo identity for someone who is predominantly or almost completely native if they reject native languages and culture and choose the latin/spanish one instead. anyone get what i'm trying to say here lol?

so i guess there are a lot of legitimate half spanish half native mestizos out there, especially in central mexico and la cuidad de mexico (mexico city) but there are also basically a lot of natives who call themselves mestizo due to culture even though aren't any more than 5%-10% spanish.

For centuries, many millions of "Hispanics" in the Americas have insisted that they're White. They take it as an insult when Whites disagree. And contrary to what some people assert, Americans aren't trying to force foreigners to assimilate. Americans would like foreigners go to away.

I didn't see this post initially, I respect any Latino who claims his white identity as well.. The Charlie Sheen comment was just a joke btw.

There's a lot of ignorance in this thread.

Hispanic simply implies that someone is Spanish speaking. Hispanic comes from the Hispania province in the Roman empire. In the Hispania province, the people spoke a dialect of latin that was known then as spanish. In fact that ancient dialect of latin is the direct ancestor of modern spanish.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispania

The true Hispanic and Latin people (from the roman empire) are 100% white. Charlie Sheen is truly hispanic because his grandfather was born and raised in Spain. Many people from mexico, who we think of as non-white in America, would definitely be considered white in Europe.

It's weird because people with Native plains indian blood and euro blood are considered white America, but people with Aztec indian blood and euro blood are not considered white. I wonder what the difference is. The Native Americans are definitely respected here in the states for some reason maybe that's why?

I think Chinese people may have a hard time understanding this. To most white people, if you look white, you're white. To the chinese, you can only be chinese with a 100% bloodline that is chinese, there's no exceptions to people who "look" chinese.

The Charlie Sheen comment was a joke! I was just playing around.

I think it's an old Southern Code or something to accept people with Native American blood as being white for Americans. I saw on a documentary that even in the Aryan Brotherhood prison gang, a man who was half Native American was one of the highest ranking members. They also had a Jewish guy among the higher ranks too! eek.gif

But the opposite applies for Black people.. 1 drop of Black blood makes you full.

Technically you're right, but the word Hispanic is just a lazy way of saying "Hispanic American" and its' the same with "Latino" it's also a lazy way of saying "Latin American". In Europe, when someone is Latin it means from Spain or Italy. France is technically also Latin, but they're usually ignored in this. There are other Latin countries, like Romania, but it's Spain and Italy people mean when they say Latin. Hispanic is actually very wrong, because unless you have actual Spanish ancestry, you're not Hispanic. It's not a linguistic term, it refers to Hispania, which includes the Basque and Catalan lands; so a Basque is Hispanic, but his mother tongue is not Spanish.

There's another difference. Mayans and other Central American Indigenous are very dark people. In contrast, some of the south American Natives are not so dark. I think it just because they live in more open areas in Central America and they have strong sun. The Europeans who came there were the Spanish, and the Spanish are dark Europeans. Not all Spanish are dark, but many are, and they have the ability to tan very dark most of the time. What that means is that Central Americans and Mexicans are dark, and they may be much darker than mixed USA Native Americans, even if they're less Native American. So, they may be regarded as less white, even in the cases that they're actually more European, simply because they're darker.

(Why is this in Chinese chat?)

chinese people have a fascination, if not downright obsession, with white people.

the white race is the very first thing chinese people think about upon waking up in the morning.

Ok. I've heard a lot of Mexicans take pride in Aztec heritage, but maybe they're mistaken.. They even get Aztec warrior tats on them. Sorry for not being PC, I'll go tell them they can't claim Aztec and see how they react.

EDIT: I guess Aztlan is the term or concept I was trying to explain unsuccessfully, sorry

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicano_Movement#Aztl.C3.A1n

BTW, Are you Mexican?.. You seem to care a lot about this.

The thing is you put all Mexicans into 1 group. With all the issues us Asians have how could you do that? I'm not talking about Hispanics or Latinos but just 1 nationality Mexicans. The worst aspect of grouping Mexicans together is putting them into gang propaganda like that of the Mexican Mafia / Sureno people. There are plenty of Mexicans that talk about having Navajo, Pueblo, Anasazi, etc... I am confused as well because I thought all three and Aztecs fell under the Aztlan Culture. But that could be and in some cases not be the case due to circumstances a long time ago and intermingling.

That wasn't the intent. I was trying to show the need to respect their choice to identify as "Latin American Mestizo".

Yeah, I never really read up on the details of Mexican ancestry until now really. A lot of Mexicans I meet identify heavily with Azteca pride etc. So I just assumed that they were. You learn something new every day.

I agree, if you didn't grow up around Mexicans and you watch TV.. You'd think they're all low riding cholos or gangsters.

The colonial boundaries (the ones white people placed) did it on their own whelm and not what the native boundaries were. So indeed some Latinos not only have Central Ameridian ancestry but also Native American ancestry up north which is something the crooked and corrupt US of A doesn't want to deal with. But many do not want to identify with any of that and will claim Spanish ancestry at all costs. It's none of our business of course but it's up to them.

True, I respect it if they choose their European side.. I'm just not used to seeing it. I actually only know one person like this and he's Nicaraguan, my little brothers best friend. He grew up in a White neighborhood and claims his Spanish heritage more than anything else.

Exactly it's really not our place to defend their ideals. If anything I should just show them the post and let them do what they will.

EDIT: I guess the idea of forced assimilation just brings out a lot of negativity in me.

Whiteys love to accuse Han Chinese of absorbing other ethnicities. But really it's White people who are absorbing other races and forcing them to assimilate.

Actually it's the Jews and liberal whites who support this. Those "evil white supremacists" would just deport the Mexicans.

It's the other way around dude. I feel disgusted that a blonde-haired blued eyed pale and pastey person gets classified as a minority just because he speaks Spanish. I don't feel sorry for Spain's economic downfall at all, they gave the majority of the Americas an identity issue when they decided colonize. In fact most colonizers are scumbags that deserve no sympathy.

Let's examine that, it's institutional racism that provides the circumstances that make a certain group more prone to ill will. If you reverse the script and it was the other way around I'm sure things would be just as messed up according to you.
