QUOTE(j_diddy @ Aug 7 2006, 11:45 PM) It's pretty damn funny that those highlights all came from games we lost pretty badly. This post has been edited by Fil-Ger: Aug 8 2006, 12:56 AM |

SYDNEY KINGS SWEEP SERIES
Aussies scuttle Pinoys' 4th quarter rally Tuesday, 10 May 2005 Image Team Philippines couldn’t sustain a furious late-game rally and endure timely perimeter baskets by the opposition as the Sydney Kings defeated RP Team-Purefoods Supremo Cane Vinegar, 104-91, Tuesday in the Accel 2005 RP-Australia Invitational Challenge at the PhilSports Arena. The Australians, who are coming off a championship in the Singapore Cup only over the weekend, went on a 15-3 run late in the first quarter and never looked back to sweep the two-game series against the Filipinos. Sydney led by as many as 27 points, the last time at 70-43, inside the eight-minute mark of the third period. But the Nationals fought their way back, cutting the deficit to eight a few times late in the game. Rommel Adducul’s drive off a Kelly Williams handoff made it a 78-86 score midway through the fourth but a jumper by Ben Knight and a triple by sharpshooter Bradley Sheridan extended the lead to 13 as Team Pilipinas fizzled out. “This has been a tremendous experience,” said national coach Chot Reyes. “To be able to get quality opposition, I can’t enumerate the number of positives this has brought out of our team.” Australian coach Brian Goorjian shared the same sentiment. “This tournament is good competition for both countries. It has enabled us to learn from each other’s programs, and that has encouraged us to want to come back here,” said Goorjian. The only downside to the series, Reyes noted, were the injuries sustained by Kerby Raymundo (strained heel) and Brandon Cablay (fractured finger bones). “Besides that, this series has been a great learning experience. Little by little, the guys are figuring out how to play together, preparing us for the tougher road ahead.” The Nationals missed 17 free throws (24-of-41) despite having 20 more attempts, something that could have made a difference for the Filipinos. Mark Caguioa led the Philippines with 27 points while Danny Seigle chipped in 20. The duo set the tone early for the Filipinos, who fought a tight contest with the Australians in the first quarter until Sydney initiated the killer 15-3 windup going into the second period. Seigle reasserted himself in the fourth period, teaming up with James Yap on the offensive end as Team Philippine threatened to within single digits and helped to rouse the crowd at the PhilSports Arena. “When we made that run in the fourth, we wanted to give the crowd something to cheer about,” Reyes added. “Sayang lang we couldn’t sustain. (DM) The scores: Box Score Sydney Kings 104 – Sheridan 24, Barlow 24, Bruton 11, Knight 11, Thorton 9, Martin 9, Carter 8, Wheeler 5, Dann 3, Stauber 0. RP Team 91 – Caguioa 27, Seigle 20, Yap 13, Miller 10, dela Cruz 7, Adducul 5, Williams 4, Menk 4, Villanueva 1, Cablay 0. Quarters: 28-16, 63-43, 78-61, 104-91 ********* FYI the 'RP Team-Purefoods Supremo Cane Vinegar' was just a training team. |
