TAIPEI - Taiwan has developed a missile capable of reaching Beijing and tested it successfully three years ago, a report said April 27, citing a former defense minister.

Taiwan's military successfully fired the medium-range missile in early 2008 in a secret test attended by then President Chen Shui-bian, said former Defense Minister Michael Tsai in memoirs released this week.

Tsai did not specify the range of the missile but the United Daily News said April 27 it was capable of reaching major Chinese cities including Beijing, Chengdu and Shenyang with a 2,000-kilometer (1,250-mile) range.

The newspaper said Tsai is the first official to confirm the island has developed the technology, though local media have previously reported that Taiwan possessed mid-range missile capabilities.

Stephen Young, Washington's then-de facto envoy to Taipei, had expressed concerns over the test, but Tsai assured him that Taiwan would not initiate any attack, the former minister said in the book.

The Chinese military was prepared to go to war should the Beijing-friendly candidate Ma Ying-jeou lose the 2008 president election, Tsai wrote, citing Taiwan and U.S. intelligence.

The reality is, there will NEVER be war between china and taiwan.

War is unlikely, but it's possible. Just like how a war between, say, China and Malaysia is highly unlikely, but not impossible.

I don't know about if war is imminent because for Taiwan to go war with Beijing it will require huge military support from allies such as Japan & America. But Beijing likely be more threatening and play tough diplomatic game on Taiwan.

I do not consider them as Chinese, because they are more loyal to Japan than the motherland. They even donated tenfolds of aid to Japan compared to Sichuan earthquake

War is not imminent between Taiwan and China. But war is always imminent between powers.

Typically and historically, for an island this size at this location, its fate is not a result of its conflict with a greater power. Rather, wars fought elsewhere determine Taiwan's fate.

In other words, the greater powers in the Western Pacific fight elsewhere, diplomatically or militarily.. Then the winner gets to control Taiwan (among other privileges and goodies.)

However China, being Chinese is always seeking shortcuts by reverse engineering. They want Taiwan first, and thinking that's the end.

But that's not going to work because if you can take Taiwan, the other powers can take it just as easily. Maybe even more easily. See you have to pay the initial cost of fighting the resistance and deploy your own defence, whereas China's competitors can always come later as the liberator.

Taipei must resist the Americans urge to kill its brethren in Mainland China.

Taiwan people must recognize that although they have been separated for hundred years from Mainland China, they too, are still Han Chinese.

Taiwan's future is based as well in a united China. Whether that is CCP or Kuomintang controlled, that remains to be seen.

Don't fall prey to Western propaganda which actually led to the split of Vietnam (North Vietnam/South Vietnam), Korea (North Korea/South Korea), and now, China (Mainland China/Nationalist China/Mongolia/Tannu Tuva).

CHINA is and should remain as ONE.
