UNIVERSAL Robina Corp., a unit of the John Gokongwei group's JG Summit Holdings, plans to open a plant in Hanoi, Vietnam, to manufacture snacks, biscuits, and candies, Inquirer sources said.

The company has a commercial office in Ho Chi Minh City.

Universal Robina president and chief operating officer Lance Gokongwei earlier said he expected plant operations in Vietnam to start in March 2005.

He said the company would set aside $40 million this year to expand local and regional operations.

Universal Robina has plants in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia and China, and commercial offices in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Gokongwei also said Universal Robina would spend $25 million to expand its production capacity for snacks in Indonesia, its biscuit production in Thailand, and its proposed candy production in Vietnam.

It will also expand distribution lines in China, he added.

JG Summit plans to introduce its popular salty snack line "Jack & Jill" as a regional food brand. It also hopes to expand its products abroad to include biscuit and chocolate brands.

Universal Robina posted net sales of P13.4 billion in the October-March semester of its fiscal year.

In the Philippines, the company plans to improve flour and sugar milling operations, and to introduce new snack products like chocolates, biscuits, and candies.

It aims to make its mark in Asia over the next five years as a major regional food brand.
