I wish our traditional dances & music were more like Malay:

Very lively and vibrant, but still traditional

It's good Filipinos are proud of their Malay-ness, but to those who aren't pure, they should also be proud, or at least respect, their own heritages. Like me, I'm proud to be Malay, but at the same time, proud to be of Spanish and Chinese descent.

Besides, being Malay does not make one a Filipino.

^^ Really? So I guess being "Filipino" for you is something "Physical" right?

Well I guess why don't you tell that to the "Pure Chinese" in their fire brigade, risking their lives to put out the fires. Tell that to the "Pure Chinese" who volunteered for the relief operations in Ondoy and Pepeng.

Again @silangan, OLD WORLD THINKING. Be Liberal about these things and be REALISTIC. The fact is, we might have Filipino blood, but that does NOT constitute our Filipino-ness.

What pumps that blood? Isn't it in the heart? Being Filipino is not in the blood, it's in the heart. It's just a matter of respecting personal background. We all have different cultures here in the Philippines, some may follow the ancient Filipino tradition, the ancient Chinese traditions and so on, but the fact remains that as long as they love this country, as long as they serve her and her people, they will be Filipino regardless of appearance.

I suppose it's not for you to decide who gets to be Filipino or not.

By the way, I'm guessing you're not a Filipino citizen but of Filipino ancestry, living in a country as a minority, seeking to find your culture but cannot due to a purist view?

The Spanish and the Chinese have also contributed to the consciousness of the Filipino aside from the Malay/Austronesians, one without the other will not consitute a Filipino. I guess middleground is the game here. I can accept a pure Caucasian or Chinese as Filipino as long as their heart is in the homeland. What I could not accept is a pure Malay/Austonesian who badmouths the country who nurtured him now that he is living in another country. Many does that here, believing that they are now non Filipinos when in other's eyes, they can never be anyone else but a Filipino.

Our Austronesian pre-spanish history should be taught. As far as education goes we seem to still be stuck with a western view point, we had a thriving, culture, an empire already established prior to the invasion and theft of our land. We have a very unique part in the Austronesian culture. We should be damn proud.

A filipino in my sense is a person from the philippines, if you came from China and assimilated, naturalized into Filipino society - you are filipino (an official document will legally make your Filipino, but as we know, that doesn't mean $hit, its just a piece of paper, their are thousands if not more "pure blood" Pinoy children with no official documentation, i am sure).

Genetically, well, thats a different story - its up to each persons interpretation of "Belonging". If the said person is "Filipino" based on physical/genetic attributes, whats say the malaysian sea bajau who grew up in sabah, is not a "Filipino"? their simply is too many factors imo.

In all we must embrace our culture, the Chinese and our neighbours HAVE taken part in our history and ancestory, we are Austronesian by majority, but we must not disregard everyone else, that in my opinion is blatant ignorance.

Peace

You are still a Filipino because you are born and raised in the Philippines but since the Martin Nuke have negrito blood, I will be forever a Filipino even if I change my citizenship.

Pacman has also Negrito blood that is why he is so strong.
