Lol. I know this song. A few years back, SNSD, KARA and WG had a retro TV special were they sang parts of past hits. I think WG sang this one. The original really was that 90s feel.

^ Anytime. Yeah, that song is one of the famous retro songs. I think that's Ha Soo Bin's the one and only hit in her short career. embarassedlaugh.gif I found her cute kindergarten picture. She was born in 1973.

She came back to stage after 16 years of long hiatus. She still looks good.

[2010][Live] Ha Soo Bin "Memories"

The new drama "The Princess' Man" (공주의 남자) is based on a coup d'etat called 癸酉靖難 (Coup of the year of Gyeyoo) in 1453 after King Sejong's death. Moon Chae Won is the heroine. You can watch it here (English subbed). Use Daily Motion links for next episodes.

The animation movie 마당을 나온 암탉 (The hen that left the yard) has just passed the 1.5 million mark at box office in Korea.

IU sang the theme song "바람의 멜로디" (Melody of the wind).

A billboard starring 2NE1 has been spotted recently in Sacramento, the capital city of California. Several K-Pop fans have reported sighting the large advertisement and were surprised that there would be a public display of a K-Pop artist in a
city not as well-known internationally as Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, and Seattle.

Located near a Starbucks on a busy intersection, the billboard stands out with its bright green and pink colors. The image of 2NE1 from their "I Don't Care" era is used for Mnet's advertisement for their channel on Comcast's Xfinity TV. According to Comcast California, Mnet America began airing on July 27th. The 24/7 English channel airs programs such as series, MVs, movies, anime, sports, and more. It makes sense that Mnet would use 2NE1's face as they broadcast their reality show "2NE1TV" on the channel.

For those interested in viewing the billboard, it can be found by the intersection of Sutterville Road and Freeport Boulevard in Sacramento.

Haegeum is a 2-string fiddle-like instrument that was introduced during the Koryo dynasty through China about 900 years ago.

Cho Hye Ryung is one of the young and prominent haegeum players.

Cho Hye Ryung "달빛" (Moonlight)
Cho Hye Ryung "이등병의 편지" (A private's letter) (Originally sung by late Kim Kwang Suk.)

Ccotbyel (꽃별) is a leading crossover haegeum musician known for commercial music and drama OST. She played haegeum in "비익련리" (比翼連里), one of my favorite contemporary haegeum songs.

[2009][Live] Ccotbyel "The Road to Sidh" (Her 4th album describes landscapes in Europe.)
[2010][Audio] Ccotbyel "비익련리(比翼連里)" (My favorite.)

She surely has lots of story. embarassedlaugh.gif

This article below will tell you more about her life story:

Emotional Reunion for Insooni and Avuncular GI After 40 Years
I never forgot his eyes

Ronald Lewis, right, is reunited on July 16 with his friend, Insooni, in front of his home in Wilmington, Delaware. Lewis befriended Insooni in a poor Korean town when he was stationed there decades ago in the U.S. Army. Insooni has become one of Korea’s biggest pop stars. [AP/YONHAP]

In 1972, Ronald Lewis, a U.S. Army soldier stationed in Korea, befriended a lonely 15-year-old girl he often saw sitting outside alone, shunned for being a mixed-race child. Her name was Kim In-soon, and she told him she wanted to become a nurse.

They lost touch a few years after Lewis left Korea in 1973.

When the two reunited after 38 years at Lewis’ home in Wilmington, Delaware, last Saturday, Lewis was greeted by a famous Korean pop star who has recorded 17 albums over an illustrious 33-year career. Today, she is better known as Insooni.

“Knowing that she made it, she didn’t have to go out on the street, that’s really a joy in my life,” Lewis told Delaware Online.

Insooni said, “He never knew I became successful in Korea. I wanted to tell him, ‘Don’t worry, I’m successful now.’ So I found him.”

The R&B singer was in the United States on a concert tour. Last year, she held a concert at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

After a long, tearful hug, the two exchanged gifts laced with personal history and symbolism.

Lewis, 58, handed Insooni, 54, a childhood photo album of her he had promised to return when the two met again.

Insooni gave Lewis a statue of seven ducks with the inscription, “Without you, I’m nothing.” One of the ducks is on top of a wave pulling up another duck. The duck being raised represents Insooni, her younger sister Kimberly Hysaw explained, and the duck helping it up is Lewis. The five ducks below lifting Insooni depict family and fans.

Lewis said he has dreamt of Insooni a few times a year. Insooni said she never forgot his eyes.

Born to a Korean mother and a black U.S. soldier, Insooni was bullied as a child for being biracial and left school.

In 1972, Lewis, then a 19-year-old serving in the U.S. Army 2nd Infantry Division in Dongducheon, Gyeonggi, developed a friendship with Insooni. He pooled money with other soldiers to buy her clothes, earrings and food. Insooni said he was like an older brother to her.

After Lewis returned to the United States a year later, they exchanged letters for a few years until they lost touch. Then, a few months ago, they reconnected through a general who contacted Lewis on Facebook to tell him someone in Korea was looking for him.

Lewis works as a technician for DuPont Co. and Insooni has enjoyed a prolific career as a singer since her breakthrough with the now-defunct group Hee Sisters in 1978.

The singer performed “Amazing Grace” for Lewis and a crowd of family, friends and neighbors. The following day, Lewis attended Insooni’s dinner show at the Sheraton Meadowlands Hotel in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Insooni said she plans to invite Lewis to Korea and will visit him each time she visits the United States. She described their reunion as a “miracle.”

not only to interpret popular forms of music better than their western counterparts -which they do
but also to infuse and promote korean styles too like for example
Shakira - latin styles with her heritage
Rihanna - carribbean undertones her heritage

the hip hop/ dance beats / pop music beats are originated from the african tribal beats . It followed african plantation slaves work songs came
the blues----> rap etc etc became 'global' hip hop , rap, 'urban' street culture etc

Koreans should interpret their own beats and make it mainstream as well.

It has to be about a "fresh" relationship? No general love songs. No obviously one-sided love. This narrows down a lot. From what I have already posted,

[1997][MV] Jaurim "애인 발견" (Love found)
[1999][MV] As One "Day By Day"
Hwang Jung Mi "First Kiss" (This is a very cute song from DJ MAX Portable Clazziquai Edition)
[2001][MV] Hey "Je T'aime"
[1990][Live] Kang Soo Ji "보라빛 향기" (Violet fragrance)

I noticed there are many songs about "confession". embarassedlaugh.gif You may like this ballad singer.

Sung Si Kyung

[2001][Live] Sung Si Kyung "내게 오는 길" (The road to me)
[2005][Live] Sung Si Kyung "두 사람" (Two people)
[2006][Live] Sung Si Kyung "거리에서" (On the street)

As for spottedk's question, is it about creating a new pop genre of its own with traditional beats and sounds for commercial success? That is beyond my scope but let me tell you what I know.

There are Korean pop songs where traditional instruments are incorporated here and there. Haegeum (#325 post) is a popular choice because it can emotionally express a wide range of notes. Gayageum is another popular traditional string instrument that was modified from Chinese guzheng. Watch this North Korean girl destroying it.

Cho Ok Ju playing gayageum

See what it's like to cover a K-pop song with gayageum.

SNSD's "Gee" played by gayageum, Janggu and guitar

Sorea is a promising traditional music (gukak) group who don't shy away from showmanship.

Sorea performing with some drum solo part (The drummer girl got swag lol)
Sorea "이어도사나" (Ieodosana) (This is a Jeju folk song sung by female divers.)
[2006][Audio] Sorea "바람에 실어" (Blown by the wind) (Drama Goong OST)

Miji is another young group. They used to be signed under the same company as IU.

[2010][MV] Miji "K.new"
[2010][Live] Miji "흐노니" (Heunoni)

There is a popular musical called Nanta which took the idea of Korean drum play style.

Cookin' Nanta

Yeah, speaking of emotion, the lyrics of the "Goose's dream" really tells her life story. The rough translation of that song is like this:

I had a dream
that was abandoned and tattered
the dream that I only treasured in my own heart
When someone laughed behind my back
I had to ignore it
I could tolerate it with a hope
for better days to come
Some say that an empty dream is just a poison bite
and the world is already set in stone

I have a dream
I believe in my dream
I can stand up to face the wall named "cruel destiny"
Watch me
Someday, climbing up that wall
I can reach the sky
Nothing in this world can ruin my dream
watch and be with me at the moment of my happiness

Hey, she's now one of the most commercially successful singers in Korea. So, we can say that her dream has come true.
She's also happily married with one daughter.

I really like this performance of Insooni. what a difference, huh?

Ring Ding Dong by Insooni

I think she did an amazing job at the age of 54.
SHINEE (the boy band that sung the original song) had better watch out. embarassedlaugh.gif

those links are awesome, thanks! but yea, i wish it was modified and modernized
made mainstream/infused into popular culture as well not only kept in the traditional arena. Its probably easier for djs and composers maybe. If there are any electronic korean djs that also use traditional korean music..would be so cool

[1996][Audio] Kim Dong Ryool "취중진담" (Truth in drunk talk) (This is a classic "confession" ballad.)
[1999][Audio] Park Hye Kyung "고백" (Confession)
[1999][Audio] Lee Seung Hwan "세가지 소원" (Three wishes)
[2001][MV] Lee Seung Hwan "사랑하나요" (Do you love?) (The little girl holding the camera is Park Shin Hye, the heroin in "You are beautiful".)
[2001][MV] Toy "좋은 사람" (Good person)
[2003][Live] Jang Nara "나도 여자랍니다" (I am a woman, too) (This is a cute poppy song.)

Insooni is considered in Korea, one of the Korea's greatest legendary pop singers. Over these many years, there have been a lot of singers that came and went, but she's still here, singing and living up to her well earned reputation. She also holds a lot of influence in Korean music industry. Her heart warming story of her reunion with her dad, was broadcasted all over the nation, and was watched by millions of viewers. She is one of my all time favorites, she never gets old with the songs she sings.
