I was answering in response to your question. You asked us why so many chinese canadians or overseas chinese in general tend to adopt english names? And Im just telling you that I never did. I still retained my chinese name that was handed down for centuries Im proud of my heritage and I would never adopt an english name just to be more white! COOL ! Chinese in China do not adopt an English name, it's completely nonsense. You sure you are talking about Chinese in China? Even for those Chinese who live in China and have an English name, they do not adopt their English names, they use them only in special locations or in certain occasions maybe in the offices of their foreign invested companies. That's pretty much I have to say about it. Go to alibaba.com. most of them are chinese from china who post their business there. I think 90% of adopt english names. |

COOL ! Go to alibaba.com. most of them are chinese from china who post their business there. I think 90% of adopt english names. I have like 2~3 friends who actually work in alibaba that website which is based in Hangzhou, I am pretty sure the employees there do ont adopt english names. those who do business with foreigners use their English names, no big deal, in real life they are like normal Chinese people. |

I think the important thing to remember is a name doesn't determine how proud you are of your heritage. I have met asian people with asian names who wouldn't give a rats a** if there country got blown up and I've met people with non asian names who couldn't be more proud of there roots and traditions. This totally depends on the person itself and how they view themselves in society. My english name is Daniel but growing up Ive always insisted that I keep my chinese name too because of the love I have for my culture and my parents so it definitely varies from individual to individual.

QUOTE I mean , it's ok for chinese to have an English name. But why the Chinese in China. Always like to adopt an English name. It's not given when they were born. China is like before, Now It's one of the GREATEST county in the world. I remember my ESL teacher actually made fun of Hong Kong students with English names, calling them not proud of their cultural heritage. I thought she was naive. What's the big fuzz about it? I like the way I had chosen my own name and have two different names I can use in different situations. |

And How about China? Why they also want to adopt English name? I don't think, it is neccesary because China is a well respected country now and also Chinese has old and rich culture than any other races. I urge all Chinese to use their original names. and beside that.... agree. chinese should be proud and use their chinese names in china. they should pass a law. all foreigners coming into china have to adopt a chinese name and use that chinese name while they are there. same with chinese going to other countries. they have to adopt namese of the host countries. QUOTE agree. chinese should be proud and use their chinese names in china. You are not even a Chinese, why do you care? QUOTE all foreigners coming into china have to adopt a chinese name and use that chinese name while they are there. A lot of Gweilos in Hong Kong have Chinese names. I have given Chinese names to some of my friends before. |
