So what your saying is just because he's doing it its ok for you to as well. Why don't you try being a leader for once and stop following what everybody else is doing. Its pretty obvious that you would try to find every conceivable excuse you could possibly come up with just to troll around in chinese chat. You really are pathetic. Tell me what exactly are you?

New Zealand would be a good example of why Chinese adopt English names. In this country we have a wide mix of races although ethnic Europeans (kiwis) are stil dominant.

English names promote social harmony. The kiwis get along with Chinese with English names far better than Indians with Indian names.

I have like 2~3 friends who actually work in alibaba that website which is based in Hangzhou, I am pretty sure the employees there do ont adopt english names.

those who do business with foreigners use their English names, no big deal, in real life they are like normal Chinese people.

I know ! That means being chinese China is not goog enough yet, without an english name.
Chinese will change anything for money.
The european or japanese or korean native, no need to change their name or adopt english for doing biz with European / foreigneres.
The Korean and Japanese are prouder with their own heritage.
The european that have chinese name, because it's given by their chinese friend. but the chinese adopt it themselves.
For those who live in america , canada or where ever , it's acceptable to have english name.
But not those in China or Taiwan or HongKong.
They were given three words name. But later add an English name... Like Daniel Chan XX XX.
If Chinese are good enough, and if the foreigners want to biz with you.
They will learn, to address you with your chinese name...
Like Chow Yun Fatt, Ang Lee ( 1st Asian to receive an Oscar Award)
Any Japanese or Korean native ( not Japanese or korean American) add an english name in front of their given name... Like Daniel Koichiro Kobayashi or Daniel Kim Il Jong. Have you met one? I haven't !
The Conclusion... Chinese (China) are not good enough to be respected yet.
Come on ! Introduce yourself like your given original chinese name by your parents. What for to have a Yang Ming (englsih name) that your parents don't even know how to pronounce. but try to please the foreigners rather than your own parents.
I am not trying to degrade those that adopt english name.
but I just want you to be proud of being chinese.

I remember my ESL teacher actually made fun of Hong Kong students with English names, calling them not proud of their cultural heritage. I thought she was naive. What's the big fuzz about it? I like the way I had chosen my own name and have two different names I can use in different situations. icon_smile.gif It is convenient and fun, and there is nothing to do with not being proud of being Chinese or whatsoever. icon_smile.gif

So, you are not a Good Enough Chinese yet!

Most Chinese in China don't know English. Therefore, they don't use English name. Only oversea Chinese use English/Spanish/whatever names because they want to adopt to other cultures since they are no longer in China anymore. Chinese don't believe in God. They think all gods are fictional. They think even Bible is
children imaginary book. However they are into worshipping their ancestry and sages such as Confusius, Lao Tsz and now Mao.

So they ARE PAGANS, Are they

Nothing to do with it, our names are generally easier to pronounce.

I think the important thing to remember is a name doesn't determine how proud you are of your heritage. I have met asian people with asian names who wouldn't give a rats a** if there country got blown up and I've met people with non asian names who couldn't be more proud of there roots and traditions. This totally depends on the person itself and how they view themselves in society. My english name is Daniel but growing up Ive always insisted that I keep my chinese name too because of the love I have for my culture and my parents so it definitely varies from individual to individual.

You only keep it to yourself but never introduce it.
Afraid that people can't pronounce it properly and can't be accepted by your white friends' circle?
So you call yourself Daniel. Given by your parents? Is it a legal name that show on your ID?
Can your parents pronounce it?
Because a lot chinese parents, can't pronounce their children' english name.
In China alot of chinese parents don't even know that their children have english name.
They will say wrong number. Of course in Chinese language.

Chow Yun Fatt never worries that his name will be pronounced Fatt as F*ck. beerchug.gif

I don't wanna spoil the fun but..

I had an English name when I started to learn English in class, most students find it cool to have an English name and all, and it doesn't really mean you just give away your name to the English one, it's like an ID no big deal, for we can better communicate in an international community and all. It's like why don't you use your personal name for your ID on this forum?

I had a French name when I started to learn French for the same reason, and that's it, I seldom even use it not even my ID on AF has anything to do with my name, it's like an ID used in a certain environment.

I use my passport name whenever I need to fill up a document, hotel reservation, whatever. I don't see a problem with adopting foreign names, afterall it's just a callsign.

If you are a boy, you probably don't mind to be called Tiger.
How about to be called StewPig.
You don't mind, do you? afterall it's just a callsign.

And what percentage of a country fits into that category?
Exactly, so why should chinese people make their lives unneccesarily harder.

I believe both of them used to attend american colleges as international students. one went to harvard and the other went to ucla or something. I guess that's twhy they have an english name. from my understanding actually it's difficult to get an english name on your green card these days. INS usualy disallows new immigrants to have thier original name changed. You can adopt english name only when you naturalize becoming an american citizen.

Are you intentionally ignoring the posts that have addressed this or just really stubborn and want to keep using this example?

Yes, I've met Japanese and Korean natives (not US citizens yet) who have English names. Someone else a couple posts ago said they have as well.

This is preposterous.
What does having an English name to do with someone's pride?
Japanese adopted Chinese character as their big part of national languages til nowadays, following your logic, they do not even have self respect?!

jesus christ I wasted so much time trying to tell you something and you turned out to talk like that?

fine, you keep what you believe in, whine as you want, like the others really care what you think. sure.gif
