If you look at Indian culture, most Indian women wear saree? But in other asian countries, they wear something else. So, in which era in Indian Culture, the Saree has come in? Basically, clothes are to cover the body. Not to expose the body. If you wear Saree, some part are exposed and some are partially covered. I was wondering why can't we have clothes, which covers the body. The size of clothes are shortening year by year. Nice topic for discussion. What is your opinion? Thanks, Robert Sari is worn by women in India and Bangladesh and Nepal but not Pakistan. I suppose it is supposed to be a very feminine piece of clothing that make women look more graceful. I have no idea when it was first worn but it is several thousand years old, at least. |

This is more like asking why Viet wear Ao dai? Because banna leaf is not sufficient enough.

hi ,
everyone , Indian ladies are more dedicated to their culture & traditions. So they prefer to wear sharees rather then other things. This post has been edited by Tenjikuronin: Jun 8 2010, 01:33 AM

Lot of younger women - especially in the urban areas actually wear the salwar kameez, another traditional dress all over the Subcontinent - and they only start wearing the saree when hey reach middle age.

Speaking of ao-dai, it almost resembles the salwar-kameez, another traditional dress commonly worn in India (and much of Southern Asia). Sort of, but the cuts are different. I'm no designer so I don't know how to use professional terms on these, but for áo dài, the cut goes diagonally from the neck down to the armpit. The slits are higher (at waist length) and the flaps are longer. It looks truly like two-flapped dress. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The cut of salwar-kameez on the top is like the cut in woman's shirt. The flaps are shorter and the slits are lower. I think it looks more like single-piece dress with slits rather than a two-flapped dress ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Thanks, Robert The sari is a couple of thousand years old atleast. Sari is to cover the body. The saree covers the essential parts of a woman's body. Also it has to be kept in mind that most of India has warm climate, thus a simple piece of clothing covering the essential areas comes very handy. Specially when you're supposed to work under the sun or infront of the stove. I personally find the sari to be extremely elegant and feminine. I love wearing saris more than anything else. |

Well, at least her jugs look healthy, especially for a 40 year-old. Can be a heck of a b!tch to get on though lol. Damn right! Women take ages to put that thing on. |

No, I'll never wear a saree, ever! But as a matter of fact, I vaguely remember being forcefully wrapped in a saree way back in my infant years... And you'd kill your own mum over a saree?! Wow, you're even crazier than the last time I met you... |
