Saw this today and it's replaced The Aviator as my favorite film of 2004. It's both painfully tragic and beautiful at the same time and I found myself tearing up like a geyser more than I can remember since Good Will Hunting. Hilary Swank HAS to win the Oscar for her performance.
Highly recommend this film. Although, I should warn, it's a very depressing film, but if you think more of it afterwards, you'll find it's actually a beautiful film. |

It does look pretty good on how when Ebert and Roeper did a critique on it. Most of the time I agree with some movie critics..

I didn't care for it from what I saw in the previews but if it's really so good it made some guy weepy I'll go see it.

I just saw it tonight. Oh my gosh. The saddest movie I have ever seen. I agree. Hilary Swank better win that Academy Award. I love this movie. I don't think I've ever cried so much while watching a movie. Oh wow. I had to watch Dodgeball afterwards to get rid of the sadness.

I finally watched this today... after months of delay. It tore me apart. It is so depressing that I just can't seem to find the beauty in it, watching the last 30 minutes of the movie was nothing but torture. The portrayal of her suffering was vital in steering the movie to its climax, but IMO it was needlessly lengthy and gruesome down to every last detail. Especially the part where she bites her own tongue... that wasn't necessary, except maybe to make you cry some more. But these minor grievances aside, it is one of the best films I have ever seen. Mystic River was no fluke, despite his age, Clint still has plenty of magic left in him.

Yes, it was quite a depressing film, but the way she achieved her goal, her dream, her hard work to no longer be the "white trash" she thought she was her entire life was beautiful in a way. To make the choice that she made in the end to not tarnish those achievements by becoming a burden, was noble in a strange way.
She was finally complete and for something as tragic as that to have happened to her, she simply refused to let fate relegate her to an eternity of misery. I also thought the tongue biting scene showed just how much strength in will she still had in her. |
