It's obviously tonal but not as high pitched. I think it sounds more like Chinese dialects than say Vietnamese or Thai. |

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2YPlfFnk0Q It's obviously tonal but not as high pitched. I think it sounds more like Chinese dialects than say Vietnamese or Thai. Burmese tonal system is much simpler compared to those languages. It's more like relative pitch or stress between the syllables. It doesn't have rising and falling tones like in those 'true' tonal languages like Vietnamese, Cantonese or Thai. |

To me it sounds like a mixture of Indian (Hindi), Tibetan, Japanese (maybe because they are so polite?).

To me it sounds like a mixture of Indian (Hindi), Tibetan, Japanese (maybe because they are so polite?). I also had the Japanese impression for a second, but thats probably cos for the reason you listed, that they are so polite, which makes us feel as if its Japanese The script is somewhat very familiar to me because the Burmese/Cambodian/Thai and Laotian scripts derived from the South Indian Tamil Pallava Script of the 7th century... So I use a very similar script. The language does not sound like Chinese at all. |
