Battle Royale is a Japanese movie, not new at all. A movie of love, violence, friendship and many other meanings..

The Story

Unemployment stands at 15% with millions out of work. School violence is out of control and rebellious teenagers stage mass boycotts. The beleaguered government retaliates with Battle Royale.... Each year a randomly chosen class is pitted against itself on an abandoned island in a cruel game of survival.

A boisterous group of 9th graders embarks on a school trip. A typical group of adolescents, they flirt, tease, bully and joke on the bus journey to their destination. Nanahara Shuya, shares cookies with his friends Nobu and Noriko on the way. On arrival, they awake from a drug-induced sleep, to find that they have been hijacked to fight this year's Battle Royale.

A former teacher, Kitano (Beat Takeshi), will oversee the battle. Flanked by gun-toting soldiers, Kitano explains that each student has been fitted with a necklace that monitors their location. It can also explode on command. He casually murders Nobu to make the point.

The rules of this game are simple:

• It lasts three days

• Each player starts out with food, water and a "weapon"

• If more than one player survives, everyone dies

• There is no escape

As the roll call begins, one by one the kids grab backpacks and stumble away towards death or murder. As Noriko picks up her pack, Nanahara quietly urges her to wait for him. When they meet outside they barely have time to compare weapons before a classmate falls on them with a hatchet. In the struggle that follows, Nanahara inadvertently kills the boy. Confused and angry, Nanahara vows to protect Noriko, and to outwit his government's sick experiment by finding a way to survive with his friends.

As the game progresses, terror and panic challenge the students' fragile trust in each other. Some suspect everyone, blindly striking down those who cross their paths. Others form alliances dreaming of a peaceful solution with multiple survivors. Against a tapestry of violence, hope and fear, Nanahara and Noriko begin to fall in love. Despite the game's brutality, the adolescent players maintain their school obsessions with crushes, petty grudges and their dreams. But as the game approaches its shocking final stages, even this semblance of normality disintegrates.

On a scale of one to Ten, how would you rate it? Also when did this movie come out? Seems like a pretty popular movie, it was brought up a few times..

"Battle Royale" director fights his own battle — cancer

Kinji Fukasaku, the 72-year-old director of the controversial 2000 film "Battle Royale," that deals with school kids killing each other to survive on a deserted island, is fighting advanced cancer. But he says he is determined to make a sequel to the film.

The director recently talked to Shukan Post about his own "battle royale" against cancer.

"The prostate cancer has spread to bones in my head, shoulders, back, rib, hip and thigh, almost everywhere. I take anticancer drugs in the morning and night and get chemotherapy once every two months to try and suppress the cancer cells. However, an acute pain still runs through my back and hip, so I have to take morphine," he said.

"Sometimes I think I'm going to faint. I cannot think clearly and my life appears to be hazy. This is very depressing, so I quit taking the morphine. You might think I am crazy for wanting to keep making films," he said.

"When I finished 'Battle Royale,' I knew I still wanted to work. Having cancer was one thing; having something unfinished in my life leaves me with an unpleasant feeling. I did not want to conclude my life with any regrets. I thought an action sequel to 'Battle Royale' would satisfy that desire," he concluded.

Fukasaku says some people tried to talk him out of it by saying that it would be impossible to make an action movie in his condition. "But I don't mind if I die during the shoot. I am emotionally prepared for the last moment," he said.

Fukasaku graduated from Nihon University, College of Art and joined the movie company Toei Co in 1953. He has directed many hit movies, including the "Jingi Naki Tatakai" series, "Kamata Koshinkyoku" and "Battle Royale." If he completes "Battle Royale II," it will be his 61st work.

Fukasaku recalled when he first learned he had cancer. He had started to feel some pain in his stomach in 1996 when he completed "Chushingura Gaiden - Yotsuya Kaidan." His doctor diagnosed it as gallstones. After a short while, the doctor told him that in fact he had prostate cancer.

"When I heard that, it did not surprise me. I thought the doctor was fooling around and told him to stop joking," Fukasaku recalled. "On the other hand, I thought I should treat my body better, but I didn't know much about cancer and I kept drinking and smoking as usual.

"I am not sure which is the best thing to do for a man like me — quit such follies and hope to live longer or continue to do whatever I like. Every one of us has different values, I do not know what is right and wrong. Either way, it is not so important for me now since it is too late."

Fukasaku said that if the cancer had been detected a little earlier, he might have got four or five years more. "But so what? Everyone dies sooner or later, so four or five years wouldn't make much difference," he shrugged.

Fukasaku said he is basically fed up with the treatment. After an operation to partially remover the cancer, he left hospital three months later. "Little did I know the exhausting ongoing treatment that awaited me. I was exposed to radiation and that was painful. I wondered wht my doctor didn't tell me that. My physical energy kept dropping."

Throughout his treatment, Fukasaku made "Omocha," followed by a TV documentary, "Monokuu hitobito" (1999), and then "Battle Royale." "I have been working with cancer for the past 3-4 years," he said. "I have sometimes felt that I should change my lifestyle. But during that time, I was never able to see the image of my deathbed in my mind."

Describing Fukasaku's illness, Yoshinobu Tsubota, a professor at the School of Medical Education in Urology at Yokohama City University, said: "Primary bone cancer is rare. More commonly, bones are the site of tumors that result from the spread of cancer from another organ, such as the breasts, lungs, and prostate. Symptoms may vary depending on the location and size of the cancer.

"Tumors that occur in or near joints may cause swelling or tenderness in the affected area. Bone cancer can also interfere with normal movements and can weaken the bones, occasionally leading to a fracture. Other symptoms may include fatigue, fever, weight loss, and anemia. Patients are usually diagnosed by a biopsy, X-rays or other imaging tests to avoid metastasis," said Tsubota.

Fukasaku will start filming "Battle Royale II" in December. "I'm emotionally ready for death. Now I want to have some fun and nothing gives me as much pleasure as making a movie. It was a great pleasure for me to make the first one with such cheerful children and see their growth throughout the period. 'Battle Royale' is the most loved of my works. So I'm going to throw as much of myself as I can into the sequel."

Reflecting on his life, Fukasaku said he would like to have lived life and left it with good grace but "I am inconsistent. I like to live and leave life disgracefully. I am afraid that when God pushes C for clear on the calculator of my life, I'll go out like the men in 'Jinginaki Tatakai' — dying like a worm at the end. Well, if it is my life, I have to accept it as it is." (Translated by Sachie Kanda)
