I'm totally ignorant about this. I totally don't know anything about this so i'm just asking and I'm not starting a fight or something. Is it true? Cuz my Mandarin friend was trying to tick my cantonese friend by telling him Cantonese people are ugly and dark while mandarin people are light and nice-looking. I wanted to ask them but they won't come up with a serious answer.

no we regard cantonese people as chinese as well. its just common stereotypes we have of them which i must admit, is entirely stupid. there is a stereotype that suggests cantonese people are darker skinned but that's cause of the climate, not cause of the race. if anything, cantonese people are naturally pale, just like northerners.
its like how in the U.S., the north calls the south and mid-west US as a bunch of rednecks or jesus boys. in every big country, there exists things like these. edit: btw, my grandma is cantonese from guangzhou. she married a northerner, my grandfather and there was never an issue with either family. my uncle went to guangzhou for university and he married a cantonese girl. there is no racism. its just regional differences at most. ask any cantonese person if they want to split away from China and they'll tell you to fu-k off. If that is true, I don't think my father and mother would have ever married each other then. There are about 56 ethnic minorities in China. We've learned to accept and even embrace each other's differences, so what makes Mandarin and Cantonese, both who are Han, so hard to accept each other?
