Borneo a beautiful island being destroyed in the name of progress.

Campaigners on the island of Borneo are trying to stop loggers doing further damage
to the homeland of the Penan tribe, whose independent and self-sufficient community
is as vulnerable as their jungle home. See link.....

Hahahahah, I always thought this thread was introduction to Sarawak.

I believe we should give Penan enough education by moving them closer to city. So they can access to city life. Sarawak need more infrastructure, and I also believe Penan should not being left alone in Sarawak jungle.

But unfortunately, leading by Chinese triad & local politician, they destroy all the jungle there, and everybody blame the Malaysian Govt for this matter. UMNO should enter Sarawak and more police should be sent to Sarawak to neutralise the Chinese triad. They even have link with Taiwan triad and Johore Triad.

Irrespective of what illegal logging activities go on in Sarawak the ultimate responsibility lies with the federal government. Even if Chinese triads are clearing the land illegally, the govnt should enforce the laws. Stealing timber and clearing land is not like pickpocketing, you need heavy machinery to clear timber and clearing land cannot go unnoticed. All the government needs to do is enforce the law, if the state govnt can't do it then the federal govnt must. UMNO as a political party does not need to enter politics in Sarawak. There are states and federal govnts that are controlled by UMNO which are also corrupted, so UMNO taking over politics in Sarawak won't necessarily improve the corruption.

The first thing the govnt needs to do is stamp out corruption in the govnt, then the police, it doesn't promote confidence when the police anti corruption squad is also corrupted. After these 2 things are done only then can corruption be stamped out lower down the order.

^ Illegal logging activities was reponsibility of every state. They have power to do that. That was the mistake for multiple party share the responsibilty to govern the state. The have to give the permissions from every parties to enact the rule. So in this case I see Federal Govt hand was tied. They just can asked Sarawak CM to act in appopriote way to stop that illegal logging. Unfortunately, the triad was support by politician too. Screw that politician, how can triad became politician as happen in Sarawak. And Fed Govt can do nothing because Sarawak have its own autonomy.

Malaysia as country not as bad as people write here. Nobody was being kill for no reason here, but certainly we can improve and I believe we have enough capabilities to achieve that target.

I believe Penan should be given more access to education so they have better knowledge of the available options. They can have the city life if they want to, but they should be free to remain in the jungle if it is what they want. Honestly, "moving them closer to the city" and "should not being left alone in Sarawak jungle" sounds repressive to me.

More police is a commendable measure, but I wonder how UMNO entering Sarawak could be a part of the solution to the Triad problem. After all, is there no UMNO in Johore?

Forestry might be state's responsibility, but isn't police a federal body? Can't it do anything against something illegal even though it's only against state ordinance?
And so what if a triad guy became local politician --prove his crime and haul him to prison, end of story.

I hope we can do that here, just haul him to prison but nobody want to testify against triad. It so easy to said that but practically even harder to practice that, that why Suharto still unprisoned even if he siphoned a lot of money????

You can't be serious in implying that any politician of mere provincial level is as powerful as our Soeharto was. At least our police can take on the provincial level any day. Unless, of course, you are implicating top politician at the national level icon_twisted.gif

Enforcing the laws is the responsibility of the police which is the federal govnts responsibility. Which triad member became a politician? Besides how many Federal politicians are corrupt? How many federal politicians or their family are wealthy? I'm not naive enough to think that Mahathirs son became rich without the influence of his father.

We're federal country not republic and Sarawak do have it own autonomy different to what we have in Peninsular, and what make even harder, most of them from different party. But I believe if govt want they can take action against this kind of thing....

Yes the state should provide information but the police can also act on its own accord. In my experience the police in Malaysia are among the most corrupt group of people in Malaysia.

i think the penans should be left alone la. they are self sufficient and most importantly happy, but for the evil illegal loggers. bringing them to the city is not a good idea i think. providing education? this i dunno la. maybe ok as long as they are not forced against their will. and they should not be told how they should live their lives. if they want to modernise, it should be up to them imo..

Craps ... & a lot of bull.

Sure, massive deforestation is happening in Borneo, but limited to Indonesian Kalimantan region. The farmers there practically still practice slash & burn policies, & we Sarawakians & Sabahans had to choke through annual haze-fest when open burning session in Kalimantan in progress.

As for Penan, they must one way or another accept modernisation. If not, their society will be left behind in terms of socio-economic & education opportunities.

If not, they'll go the way of the primitive Neanderthals, whose extinct over the more creative & industrious modern Man.

This is the way of the world, whether we like it or not.
