Buy low, sell high.
But seriously, the market is too volatile for my liking. |

Actually, it's buy high, sell higher, and never try to bottom pick. But that only applies to traders. Investing is a different game.
Is this clan about investing or trading? Investing in a bunch of stocks with no idea about the management's capability, the company's performance prospects, or the time horizon in which the "tip" is a good investment is pretty suicidal if you ask me. |

Buy Index Funds. Most people shouldn't be investing directly.

I've been trying to learn but there is just fu-king too much information out there and I don't even know where to start. Any tips? Burma Man, I use www.Zecco.com. If your account has at least $2,500; then you get 10 free trades per month. Otherwise, you pay $4.50 per stock trade. You can take a look at the stocks below. You can go to the link below and screen the stocks below using the criteria I have listed. http://screen.yahoo.com/stocks.html Index Membership: S&P 500 Valuation Ratios Price/Earnings Ratio: 0 to 10 Price/Book Ratio: 0 to 5 Price/Sales Ratio: 0 to 5 PEG Ratio: 0 to 1 Symbol Company Index Mem P / E Price/Book Price/Sales PEG AES AES CORPORATION Dow Utilites , S&P 500 8.32 2.4 0.7 0.92 ATI ALLEGHENY TECH NEW S&P 500 7.67 2.0 0.9 0.56 ADM ARCHER DANIELS MDLND S&P 500 9.13 1.2 0.2 0.86 AN AUTONATION INC S&P 500 9.27 0.6 0.1 0.99 CB CHUBB CP THE S&P 500 7.27 1.2 1.2 0.87 CVH COVENTRY HLTH CARE S&P 500 9.64 1.6 0.5 0.77 XOM EXXON MOBIL CP Dow Industrials , S&P 500 9.90 3.3 1.0 0.82 GS GOLDMAN SACHS GRP S&P 500 7.82 1.6 1.6 0.7 HUM HUMANA INC S&P 500 9.44 1.9 0.3 0.71 MTW MANITOWOC CO INC S&P 500 7.94 2.0 0.7 0.23 MRO MARATHON OIL CORP S&P 500 9.98 1.6 0.5 0.73 NE NOBLE CORP S&P 500 9.50 2.8 4.1 0.4 NUE NUCOR CP S&P 500 8.88 2.1 0.8 0.91 TEX TEREX CP S&P 500 7.20 1.9 0.5 0.54 TRV THE TRAVELERS CO S&P 500 6.75 1.0 1.0 0.83 RIG TRANSOCEAN INC S&P 500 8.14 2.7 4.1 0.43 WYN WYNDHAM WORLDWIDE S&P 500 9.56 0.9 0.8 0.7 Please feel free to ask if you have any questions. |

Thanks for the info.
What about the tax? How many percent do you have to pay when you buy/sell? How does it affect the federal/state income tax return? Do you get someone like H&R Block to do it for you or use the software that you can buy from Best buy/circuit city? I've heard that there is a range for income tax and if you go hit the next range then you have to pay more? |

QUOTE(dychen85 @ Sep 3 2008, 03:06 PM) hey what do you guys think of these 3 stocks. KONG- WM CAEI Take a look at the valuation measures of KONG below. According to my personal investing style, I would not invest in KONG because its Price/Earnings is 89.33. I prefer to invest in companies with Price/Earnings of less than 10. Kong's PEG ratio is 4.54. Again, this is too high. I invest in companies with PEG ratio of less than 1.0. http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ks?s=KONG Data provided by Capital IQ, except where noted. VALUATION MEASURES Market Cap (intraday)5: 143.19M Enterprise Value (4-Sep-08)3: 15.17M Trailing P/E (ttm, intraday): 89.33 Forward P/E (fye 31-Dec-09) 1: 30.92 PEG Ratio (5 yr expected): 4.54 Price/Sales (ttm): 1.78 Price/Book (mrq): 0.80 Enterprise Value/Revenue (ttm)3: 0.19 Enterprise Value/EBITDA (ttm)3: 26.709 ___________________________________________ I have Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. (GT) in my portfolio. I invest in GT because currently it has P/E of 5.76 (less than 10) and PEG ratio of 0.26 (less than 1). Furthermore, it has Price/Sales of 0.24 (less than 5.0) and Price/Book of 1.47 (less than 5.0). http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ks?s=GT Data provided by Capital IQ, except where noted. I've heard that there is a range for income tax and if you go hit the next range then you have to pay more? I pay $24.99 per 6 months for GainsKeeper and it keeps track of my capital gains/losses. You can choose to keep track of it by yourself using Excel spreadsheet. For long-term capital gain (more than 1 year) on stocks, you need to pay 15%. If it is short-term capital gain (less than 1 year) on stocks, you pay at your current tax bracket. This post has been edited by SoCal: Sep 3 2008, 10:04 PM |

My current portfolio consists of the stocks listed below with 70/30 split between stocks and fixed income investments.
JPM TWC C CNP WNR (recent acquisition, sold SU and purchased WNR is late May) MRK KFT TAP PG Due to the mortgage crisis/credit crunch I've been getting killed in the financial sector for the past few years. However I've been able beat market returns due to my "safe" dividend stocks. Thank god the US Treasury announced the bailout for FanMae and FreMac. Anywho, you guys should try this site. http://www.investopedia.com/ I used to use it during my undergraduate days. It's a pretty good stock simulator, it's good for college students to practice before they head into the real world. TO thread starter (SoCal). If you like, you can start up a Investopedia account/game and make it public to all the members on AF. Just post the Game Name on the forum so people can join. So everyone on AF can compete with each other and see who will be the next Warren Buffet. |
