I've seen in a number of posts (that I'm failing to dig up now) that although presently the relationship has been somewhat bad that in the past Southeast Asian nations and Japan were generally allies. This is more of a request for sources on this being a fact than anything. I know I've seen them here before...

I don't see your point. Relations between Japan and Philippines are booming. Their investing more in the Philippines, we have mutual defense agreements, their supporting us and we are supporting them etc. Not just the Philippines but all of South East Asia. Asean+3 includes Japan icon_smile.gif

I think ASEAN +3 is not working anymore because of China and ASEAN is not united anymore because Cambodia does not support the Philippines in the Scarborough Issue and China is trying to disunite ASEAN also.

South Korea and Japan is in full support regarding the Spratly and Scarborough issue and it is also supplying military hardware to the Philippines like the AFP just ordered 12 jets from South Korea and 12 ships from Japan.

Sorry, I meant during Imperial Japan era.

I remember seeing in Trismegistos' posts before that this alliance goes back to pre-colonial times. One of the sources in particular cited historical events in which Japan sent warriors to aid us etc. Anyone have a link to that source?

Also thanks for telling me this, I didn't know about ASEAN +3 icon_smile.gif

Yeah, I remember reading about this on PE I think. Do you have any of those posts from before where it references SEA and Japan's good relations in ancient times?

Sayang, dead link na ang original reference which is Mike Pangilinan's blog(aka Siuala ning Meangubie) hosted on a Japanese domain.

Pero may na copy paste ako na iilan...

I try to read as many sources on the prehispanic Philippines or anything concerning us & I have come across a few things on Philippine-Japanese relations before hispanization. I have collected these sources via screencap, I can email all of them to you if you like.

1 thing I read was that the Japanese used to prize our Rusun (Luzon) Jars for their traditional ceremonies. Also, Japanese culture for me seems to have a lot of Austronesian elements, like tattooing, their phonetic language, their traditional homes are very Austronesian (bahay kubo style), they were a feudal society like many Austronesian counterparts, etc. As to the mystery on the hows & why's of these influences, many theories but no satisfying one for sure. Because their language based on grammar, though has many Austronesian elements, is not Austronesian, excepting certain terms where they employ repetition. But linguistic study in SE & E Asia, as well as Polynesia is very new compared to the study of Indo-European, so there is a lot of room to explore.

Also, I think traditionally, based on their myths, folklores & legends, the Japanese believe they came from the south (this is prior to the Korean migration).

PM me your email, I can just send you the many collated screen caps I've collected on this so far.
