Hi, I am new to this forum and really hope u can help me since I didnt find any good info on the web.
I will visit Malaysia next March. I am planning to be a backpacker for all the time (6 months) and want to bring a 'Glock' survival knife with me (17 cm blade, single edged, with saw on back side). It is not a flick knife and not a dagger which are illegal in Malaysia. My questions are: - Am I allowed to bring it with me ? - When I bring it from Thailand to Malaysia via train is there any problems on the border inspection ? I intend to carry the knife in my backpack. I am really looking forward for your help on this issue. Thank you very much...btw I am from Germany. Laters, |

Hi there Dr Birkin!
Welcome to AF. Oh no. You'll be missing out on the Chinese New Year and Thaipusam celebration which falls on 29/30 January and 11 February respectively. But it's okay. You can check out on the Harvest Festival (30/31 May) in Sabah and Gawai/Dayak Festival (1/2 June) in Sarawak. They will be pretty interesting. But I am sure you have already done your homework. I am not too sure if you can bring a "Glock" survival knife along with you across the border. If you do not mind you can try. The worst that can happen is that the customs would confiscate the knife from you and you will have to buy a new one in M'sia. :\ Right now the other forumers are celebrating the Hari Raya Puasa. They may reply much later. Anyway I hope that you'll enjoy your stay in M'sia! The food especially This post has been edited by caramel: Nov 3 2005, 04:00 AM |

Thanks for the fast replies !
Yeahh, I intend to stay for the whole 6 months in Malaysia...but only in western Malaysia, on the Peninsula. I will stay out of cities hence I come there for the nature, especially the jungle. And therefore I need my "Glock"... okay...it's only 30 $...if customs seize it I dont care... but I do care of getting eventually caned for illegal possession of what they may call is a dangerous weapon. So please if anyone knows the real deal please tell me. Laters, The Doc |

i think you can for your own personal use ..but just in case..go declare it at the custom to avoid any troubles(the most also they confiscate it only, say to them you need it for jungle trekking and exploration in malaysia's nature park?)
p/s: you wont get caned for illegal possession, i dont think our govt is that barbaric to cane someone for some mere item. Have a pleasant stay in malaysia p/s: just in case if you dont have the custom guide for tourist, go to this website: http://www.customs.gov.my/html/eng/pengemb...=129&category=3 This post has been edited by khtan2000: Nov 3 2005, 05:16 AM |

Hallo, Dr.Birkin.
Deutsche sind der weltmeister im Reise...oder?? If you passed the security check on the airport in Germany, z.B Frankfurt or Düsseldorf Flughafen, I think you will be safe. keine Sorge. |

Laters, Recently in the local newspaper, the New Straits Times, a woman complained that the security checks at the KLIA is very loose. She managed to bring a big pair of scissors and they did not detect it. I think u can bring it but with a good excuse to do so. Where will backpack, would u like some of our suggestions? |

backpacking in malaysia for 6 months?
nice! about the glock, u might wanna declare it at the customs, as mentioned in one of the earlier posts but, just in case things didnt go as planned, be prepared to bring extra cash so that u can get a new glock also, hope you have a nice stay in malaysia This post has been edited by zizou: Nov 4 2005, 10:10 AM |

Hello Dr Birkin, Selamat Datang ke Malaysia!
I doubt it would be a problem if you come overland as a backpacker. Just don't brandish it at the customs officer while he waves you through |

Thank you very much for your replies ! I really appreciate that.
And yes, you convinced me to just give it a try. I think I will declare it as my "Diving knife" And supposing I wet myself just before the border inspection I'll hide it in the train somewhere BTW... Off course I want to visit Endau Rompin for its untamed nature but I heard that I have to get a visiting permit issued in Johor Bahru. But hence I come from the north it would be quite unpleasant for me to travel down south just to get this permit and travel up north again to see the nature And what happens if I just travel into a park and dont habe a permit ? And get caught ? Furthermore...if anyone knows A MUST SEE for me please tell me. The Doc |
