I don't think he really committed suicide. I think that was a cover. I think he was murdered by fellow crewmembers in a Hate Crime.

This Mercury News article seems more unbiased and sheds more light onto the situation. For one thing, they actually interviewed Cpl Lew's father and listened to the Lew family's side instead of just rehashing the words of those killers.

So apparently you guys were right and I was wrong. And for that I just want to say that I am so / very sorry for wrongfully thinking that a fellow Asian brother would be so dishonorable and irresponsible as to sleep on the job in a war zone. So apparently this was a case of "Let's beat up the new chinese because he is a skinny chinese and we are all beefy brainless motherfu-kers who want to GET SOME." And Lew, unfortunately, being a smaller minority kid surrounded by menacing low-class brutes, decided that the only way he could get away from them was to shoot himself.

If this was an actual suicide indeed, it's really unfortunate and sad that Lew found that suicide was the only way out.

I do wonder if there were a deeper issue at hand. Like, was the accusation of Lew of falling asleep while on watch just created to try to justify their beating him?

A soldier knows how bad it is to fall asleep on post. If he did fall asleep, he'd be hating himself and he probably would have expected a beating, however that is no reason to go through with it. Beating him up doesnt solve problem or reinforce a good reason to keep yourself from falling asleep. The lives of your mates depending on you is a reason to do your duty, not because you fear being beaten up. If he was murdered and beaten because he was asian, then I dont see how the other marines can trust the culprits ever again. How can you trust someone with your life who is more than willing to kill one of their own?

Guess my cycle was an exception only 2 people had GED's and they were NG.
Also I believe in the 80's they required you to have a Diploma or you would need a waiver for a GED.

Most grunts on average are highly motivated and intelligent people. Look up the DOD stats for income and education.... looks like your assuming.
