I am just wondering whether vietnamese are actually han chinese who have lost their identity ?
You are so similar to the chinese in terms of 1. You have chinese surnames even after one thousand years of independence from china. 2. You willongly embraced our religion, culture, clothing and traditions. 3. You look like Chinese. 4. You eat chinese style food. This post has been edited by Q57: Nov 1 2005, 06:14 AM |

In no way were they related to the Han..... |

Austroasiatic: (Vietnamese, Cambodian), Daic (Thai), and Miao-Yao families of southeast Asia--recently lumped together with Austronesian as a single superfamily. |

Austroasiatic is how our languages are similar. But for physicall appearance you guys are more related to indoneasian, thai, laos and Cham people in central vietnam.
"The viets lived in that area originally and have been recorded to even in the chinese annals. They then moved south to where vietnam is now (northern vietnam) because of the invading chinese (Han). The viets don't have Han in their blood (or atleast most viets don't). It is commonly believed that the southerners have less of a circle face, and has more of a heart shaped face, also leaner in body structure, brighter and lighter in skin, with bigger eyes and more double eyelids. It is possible that the Yueh line gave the southern chinese this (as it is written in chinese annals that the viets had these traits along with a whole bunch of stuff concerning the toes, toes thing too long, so someone else can right it if another is curious). The vietnamese have these traits too." http://goldsea.com/Poll/CHMVF/chmvf_20526.html |

Well the move south aborbed the khmer and cham into the vietnamese, but is only evident in the south. The central and northern area was free of khmer and cham, hence the reason for the lighter skin.

viet and han are different, but viet can be considered a lost yeuh tribe that never assimiliated into the Han
as for viet being cambodian, NO...we are in noway related to them, we didnt even have contact with them since Champa was blocking our way til 1300's, but i have done some research, and i see alot of cambodians say that china and and cambodia are long lost blood brothers |

All Asians are long lost brothers sisters from Africa .
However, Vietnamese and Cambodians are closer relatives than Chinese. We are brothers and sisters dozens of thousands of years ago. At that time, people in Vietnam and China are tribes without a nation. The Chinese came to Vietnam only 2 or 3 thousands of years ago. It does not means that a person can say "Vietnamese = Chinese + Cambodian" This reasoning and thinking is some kind of low self esteem. About skin color: The Chinese have brighter and lighter skin than the Vietnamese. You are more correct saying about the face, the eye lids, and body built. |
