. no one uses the term 2nd world country. it's only 1st world or 3rd world. some people refer thailand as a 2nd world country due to it's corrupted politics. in every deparment, thailand is a 1st world country. Hmm funny , sure there is the therm Second World Country I know it because I learned it in School. In Germany we called second World Countries as "Schwellenländer" and 1st World Countries as "Industrieländer" (industrial countries) And 3rd Countries as "Entwicklungsländer" (developing Countries) Thailand still have many Problems then its Corrupted politics. A good Thai Friend told me that there is not any Freedom because there are many lacks of political stability. And there were still many Slums in Bangkok or in other Countries. Yes Cambodia is not better in such things but I belive that Thailand is a 2nd World Country. You just need to compare the 1st World Countries with Thailand and you will see the different. if you are to lazy for it then I can do it for you. In the German Wikipedia there is a article about 2nd Countries , it says that the World Bank categorized Thailand as a 2nd World Country. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schwellenland Quote from Wiki A developing country can have, in general, the following results: Achieve above-average growth rates that exceed in some cases the growth rates of OECD countries significantly. They develop the breadth and depth structure of the manufacturing industry to the production of capital goods and by creating targeted investment in physical and social infrastructure, particularly in training of human capital, a prerequisite for progress in development. Comparative labor productivity with the OECD countries at much lower wages. Exploit niches in the global market place and on the export of finished goods. The average per capita income is about $ 699 per year. |

Third World were refer to those country that had no allegiance with Nato/USA. But the definition of 1st world and 3rd world had change. 1st world is when a country have a strong economy. 3rd world is when a country have a weak economy. If USA economy fails, that mean usa will be a 3rd world country despite it being fully developed than the world. 1st = Strong Economy 3rd = Weak economy This post has been edited by khmerking: Feb 10 2012, 08:57 PM |

I think all Asians are racist but not in the degree like White and Black people , or not like in the US. We, Asians in Asai, ove to boast ourselves to each others that's all. and Laos is the worst now. It can't compete with Cambodia even Cambodians went through their loss more than you Lao people. Lao is sooooo weak. |

Only idiots from 1st world countries will call Thailand as third world. LOL Third words are all those poor countries in Africa, and some former-communist countries, like Laos, and Cambodia.

This is how I would categorize it: 1st = Industrialized Country 2nd = Newly Industrialized Country 3rd = developing Country This is how I would definition of a "take off Country" like Thailand: Under a newly industrialized country refers to a country that is still known as a developing country, but no longer have the typical features. Such features may include, for example, a low per capita income, a passive trade balance or a high foreign debt. An emerging economy is in the industrialization, where the agricultural economy is losing more and more important. This development can be identified on the basis of economic indicators. Such a restructuring of a country is usually not an equally rapid social development (literacy, life expectancy) and is accompanied susceptible to political unrest. Characteristics that indicate an emerging country, for example, above-average growth rates, high productivity and low wage levels and investment in infrastructure and human formation. Several organizations (World Bank, OECD, International Monetary Fund, European Community) regularly publish lists of countries that are emerging standards for their evaluation. The World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) categorize Mexico, the People's Republic of China, South Africa, Brazil, India, Malaysia, Russia, the Philippines, Thailand and Turkey as emerging markets. |

Ok, Bangkok is first world, and Calgary is third world. satisfy? why would you bring calgary in to this? how is calgary a third world? it's one of the tops cities to live in the world, just look up "best cities to live". majority of rating they are in top 30s, and even lower, heck "Economist Intelligence Unit" it's the 5th best best cities to live. and thats not even canada's best city. Bankok is thailand's best cities but it does not even make top 100. i dont think you understand what defines third and first world. you don't have to get all defensive, I'm not insulting you, I'm just stating the fact. you are letting you're ego as a Thai get in the way from seeing the truth. I'm just trying to get you to open your eyes but anyways... so you agree, thailand is a third world country. This post has been edited by AChanh: Feb 12 2012, 03:15 AM |

We'll go by the world definition. Thai is a 1st world country. Are you blind or is your Brain lacking ? Did you read my definition ? Did you see that China is a 2nd World Country ? What didn't you understand ? If Thailand is a 1st Word Country , so China would be it too or not , and India too but did you ever see how many People in India still live in Poverty ? Like I said many times before here is a Map of Newly industrialized countries (2nd World) I think that you have no clue about Thailand Let Compare a 1st World Country (Germany) with a 2nd World Country (Thailand) Germany: GDP (PPP) 2011 estimate - Total $3.089 trillion[2] (5th) - Per capita $37,935[2] (18th) GDP (nominal) 2011 estimate - Total $3.628 trillion[2] (4th) - Per capita $44,555[2] (19th) Gini (2006) 27 (low) HDI (2011) increase 0.905[3] (very high) (9th) Thailand: GDP (PPP) 2011 estimate - Total $616.783 billion[4] (24th) - Per capita $9,598[4] (84th) GDP (nominal) 2011 estimate - Total $332.47 billion[4] (30th) - Per capita $5,174[4] (89th) increase0.682[6] (medium) (103rd) The HDI of Thailand is medium for a 1st World Country it should be a high or very high status This post has been edited by khmerpride: Feb 12 2012, 07:33 AM |

Industrialized Country 2.Newly Industrialized Country 3. Developing Country How would you do a ranking with these 3 terms ? Did you see my Map I posted ? It showed all Newly Industrialized Countries around the World. Maybe you don't can believe me because you don't have a clue about the geography of Thailand xDDD I believe you think that 1st World Countries were USA the Allies 2nd World Countries the the Soviet Union, China, and their allies. 3rd World neutral and non-aligned countries. But you claimed that Thailand is a 1st World Country because it have a strong economic , but if you categorize like above it should be a 3rd World country because Thailand is neutral or ? I don't know what is our problem , Thailand will be one day a Industrialized Country. Cambodia is still a developing Country and I wish that Cambodia moving to a rich Country like Thailand. I would be happy if Cambodia is today a "2nd" World Country. You need to accept the truth |

Hm I never heard about 2nd World Countries were Communist and such things. You may not old enough to hear it. During cold war, America and its allies called themselves as "1st world" to compare with "2nd world" or communist countries like Russia, China etc. And the rest were calleld "3rd world" "3rd world" countries in those days were pretty much neutral, and American wanted them to take side with "1st world" to contain "2nd word" communist countries. That's why it's called "cold war" They tried to promote the concept of "Democracy brings prosperity and wealthiness" and "Communist brings trouble and poverty" and tried to convince 3rd world countries to walk after them rather than going with the 2nd world countries. The world "3rd world" was used to call "developing" countries and it is still used to many countries in SEA today even when the quality of life in many SEA cities already surpassed many cities in Europe and America. While the term "2nd world" is not used any more because the largest debt owner of Americans today is China. 1st = Industrialized Country 2nd = Newly Industrialized Country 3rd = developing Country "Newly Industrialized Country (NIC)" was a "post-cold war" term. It has nothing to do with the term "2nd world countries" during cold war. It's used by Americans to call countries (from 2nd and 3rd world) whose quality of living already surpassed them.
