Do most khmer youth go to college? Options

its not the most important aspect but it is one of the most important.
family n caring for loved ones are a more important aspect to us cambodians.

eh.. I don't know too much about the Khmer people in my city, but the ones that get married early tend to not go to college.. I don't even know if they finished high school. My Cambodian friends here in my city, I know they're definitely going to college or university... at least most of them are.

My older sister has finished university, and went to college for a year after that.. now she's looking for a job that pays something like 40 grand a year.

My older bro is in his last year of college.. I don't know what he's doing after that haah. He's most likely gonna look for a job.

As for me... I want to get into business. Not too sure what college or university i'm headed to though..

So because you never met a college-based khmer before (or any khmer at all) you conclude that education is not valued in khmer culture. How narrow-minded. I believe education is pretty much important in any culture, especially in the US where the idea of being institutionalized is what brings success.

Of course we go to college. However, there always some who will not go just like in any other ethnic groups.

Around here in my community. Not alot. Met ONE Khmer there that I know of at my school. A Chinese/Khmer girl who is Khmer Krom? lol Chinese and Khmer, spoke Vietnamese and Khmer. Or so she says.

Anyway, at my college, there are a pretty good number eventhough the khmer population isn't as high as in long beach or lowell. We also have a Khmer club here and our new year show attracts many. I guess it depends on where you live. Long beach and lowell are pretty much ghetto cities so you'll find a lot of not-so college-based khmers there whereas in my state, khmers are pretty well-rounded and hardworking people.

I'm around or near the Khmer ghettos. So maybe that's why. Lowell/Lynn.

population is not a good way to compare between a two groups, you have to take the percentage of the population of the two groups then compare it

Even you guys have to admit. Percentage wise it's still way lower compared to other Asians. SO even if the population numbers were the same it wouldn't matter.

I think you getting it wrong here, when we talk about percentage, we talking about x amount divided the total population of that group, for example if there is 20000 cambodians attending college and there the cambodians population is 400,000, you take 20000/400000=5 percent of cambodians attend college
Using this 5 percent mark you can compare it against the vietnamese, chinese,laos, or hmong by using the same procedure

Cambodian parents tend to push their kids the least. Let them roam free or so to speak. All well and good, if their children are actually responsible enough, and usually they aren't. I'll admit my parents were like this too. They let me do whatever I wanted ever since I was 13 (ooh, lucky number), so I did do what I could, and guess what? My grades slided from 90%+ average in a quick amount of time to .. well.. lets say barely passing. :P. Anyway, I still passed high school, but instead of going off to uni, I ended up being a bum, doing crappy TAFE courses. I wasted 2 years. I'm not wasting next year though =), I'm going to uni *woohoo for me*! As for my brother, well, he dropped out when he was 14, now, I know he is not a stupid guy, in some instances, I'd say he was a smarter person than I am, but he just doesn't care... bottom line, he just doesn't care.

Now, some of my cousins which had much stricter parents ended up going to uni *surprise*surprise*, and they're Cambodian too. One is a nurse now, another is about to become a pharmacist, and one is an accountant.

So.. It's a mix of things, such as:

* Parents
* Determination
* Culture
* Peers

Obviously there are other factors involved such as intelligence and creativity, but these can be trained too, to an extent.. lol

Man at age 13 if I didn't go straight home after school I'll get my @$$ beat. i think he was too harsh on me.
And if I ever dropped out of school he would've killed me and then commited suicide. lol

I remember my mom and dad, especially my mom always threatened me with committing suicide if I dont do well in school, that was soo hard on me
