QUOTE 'DEMOCRACY MARTYR' iTV rapped for report on driver's final words Soldiers sent to broadcaster's newsroom; reporter queried Fearing the highly publicised suicide of taxi driver Nuamthong Phaiwan could trigger a pro-democracy revolt against the September 19 coup-makers, the military yesterday reprimanded iTV for reporting the final message of the man who killed himself to protest against the coup. An additional 20 soldiers were dispatched to the station after a phone call from a high-ranking military officer to iTV's managing director, Songsak Premsuk, and news editors to warn them that the Council for National Security (CNS) was disturbed by the station's reporting on the suicide. A source from iTV's newsroom said the CNS intervention might have been prompted by fear iTV was trying to help deposed premier Thaksin Shinawatra. Another officer from the CNS secretariat called iTV reporter Jom Petchpradab to ask why he conducted an interview with Nuam-thong two weeks prior to his suicide. Jom got an exclusive interview with Nuamthong on October 14, while he was attending commemorations of the 33rd anniversary of the 1973 pro-democracy uprising. Nuamthong had just recovered from injuries caused by his first suicide attempt on September 30, in which he rammed his taxi into a tank at the Royal Plaza. The station did not air the interview initially because of martial law restrictions, but decided to release it after Nuamthong's suicide. Jom said he told the officer, whose name he could not remember, that he did the interview because of Nuamthong's strong faith and willingness to sacrifice for democracy. "I reassured the officer that I was not involved in any conspiracy against the CNS, nor am I a part of the 'undercurrent'," Jom told The Nation, referring to the CNS' term for an alleged pro-Thaksin movement. "I also told him that I would feel sorry if the interview tape were used to serve ill intentions." The Army's Civil Affairs Department yesterday reportedly sent a letter to the six public TV channels summoning their news editors for instruction today on "constructive reporting for peace of the nation". Media censorship in thailand never fails to surprise me even though this is the kind of thing you'd come to expect of it now. |

I honestly think that it was a good idea to censor information on his suicide. It might do more harm than good. Don't want to make things even more crazy than it already is.

An idiot such as that taxi driver deserves death; there is no room in Thai society for people like that. Im glad they censured that story; its mere politico-drama; and we can do without that. A taxi driver hanging himself shouldn't be used to influence the affairs of the state. We have hundreds dying in the south every year due to terrorism; which is more important that a pro-thakky taxi imbecile who so happens to hang himself.

If some fans of those dance stupid enough and follow the cab driver foot step They may protest by wearing only one undie and run around Sanam luang. (And the one who love that dance is the old bald guy with beer belly) This post has been edited by AEROFORCE1: Nov 3 2006, 09:56 AM |

More news
Isaan radio stations fall silent A total of 54 radio stations in two northeastern provinces have stopped broadcasting temporarily, following an order by the Council for Democratic Reform under Constitutional Monarchy (CDRM). Provincial authorities instructed 53 stations in Roi Et and one in Amnat Charoen to comply with the coup leaders' order. An official in Roi Et said another 20 unregistered stations in the province had decided to stop broadcasting at the request of a local military office. Another 100 stations in Khon Kaen are still operating. Chanadda Harris, head of the Khon Kaen Public Relations Office, said the stations were still broadcasting until further notice or a request to stop was made by the Second Army Region, which oversees units in the entire Northeast. She speculated that the reason local Army headquarters had not yet made any request to halt broadcasting in her province was that none of the stations there had aired any pro-Thaksin Shinawatra material or anything critical of the CDRM. Phone-in comments from listeners had also been put on hold. She added that her office was drawing up interim broadcast regulations with the CDRM, which were expected to take effect soon. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/2006/09/23...al_30014447.php =============================================================== The goverment rilly be careful with these radiostation too cuz they used to air the propagonda in the Esarn area hey nothing wrong with running about wearing undies ! @ skull This only allow for the hotty halfie like Charlee ,the soldier can only But for the dude like us we may get shot This post has been edited by AEROFORCE1: Nov 3 2006, 12:18 PM |
