I call myself Cambodia but NOBODY ever thought that. Their first instinct is that I'm Chinese or Viet (damn...hate being called a Viet...DOO MA). But I do have a bit of Chinese in me. My other Cambodian friend is true blue Cambodian and I think I he represents a native Cambodia. He's distinctively darker than me and his hair is Afro...some white girls mistook him for an Afro but found out that he was Asian when he dropped his pants  That's a true story!!! No kiddings!!!

You cannot refer to our royalty to represent a typical Cambodian. They have a lot of Chinese blood in them. The princes (which there are many) tend to pluck away all the good looking Chinese (or Cambodian girls for that matter) when they come across them. Many current royals have Lucy Lue's eyes...and the current King, HM King Norodom Sihamoni is 1/3 European (Itallian...I think) from his mother's side. And many of the royals...some in direct succession lines have married other nationalities such as Malay, European and American. Just like us ordinary Cambodians have inter-married Chinese and Viet (you can't resist the Viet girls...come on!).

Because of a communications foul-up by my travel agency, I'm on a bus for the last hour of the trip instead of regally cruising by boat into downtown Phnom Penh. The switch is informative. I see evidence of the Cambodian government's corruption: Walled mansions of government employees stand next to shantytowns, and Lexuses with air conditioning pass cripples riding battered bicycles.

As I stand on my hotel's deck, I consider: It's said that to drive the length of the Mekong would take two days behind the wheel at 60 mph.

I spent two days on a boat at just 10 mph, and saw so much more.
