Tibetan sets himself on fire in front of Chinese Embassy in Delhi

Delhi (AsiaNews) – A Tibetan man, Sherab TseDor, tried to set himself on fire in front of the Chinese Embassy in Delhi today to protest against Chinese repression in Tibet. He was taken to hospital with about 10 per cent burns. This year in Tibet, 11 monks and nuns opted for self-immolation, the latest case involving a nun yesterday.

In a statement to the press, Sherab TseDor stated that "out of helplessness and desperation, 11 Tibetans including two nuns, have self immolated since March this year till recently as on, Thursday, 3rd November, calling for freedom and the return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet.”

The Chinese government, the statement added, “instead of looking into the Tibetan people's aspiration for freedom and human rights,” chose a policy of suppression that “stands in complete violation of the international covenants on basic human rights.” China keeps “on denouncing His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his middle way approach for a genuine autonomy for Tibet through its false propaganda.”

“Such tragic incidents, which happen frequently in Tibet, are a clear indication of the Tibetan people's deep-seated resentment against the Chinese government's wrong policy on Tibet. Hence, we strongly urge the Chinese government to put an immediate end to its consistent policy of cracking down on Tibetans.”

“Today, I Sherab TseDor, will self immolate myself in front of the Chinese embassy in protest against the ongoing repressive measures [. . .]. I beg and plead [to] world leaders and peace-loving people: Please do something for the genuine cause of Tibet. We are dying and it's [the] moral responsibility of every freedom loving people to support us.”

Yesterday, a Tibetan nun set herself on fire to protest against Chinese oppression. Shouting “Free Tibet” and “Long Live the Dalai Lama”, Palden Choetso (or Choesang), 35 (pictured) from Darkar Choeling, in Twu (Daofu in Chinese), Sichuan Province, chose self-immolation. She died from her burns. (N.C.)

If such acts of immolation are not condemned by the Gelugpa hierarchy as sinful and anti the teachings of Buddhism, then the Dharamsala hierarchy are using this for their own political purposes and thus are despicable.
