After watching lots of japanese and korean pop on youtube, I have to say that korean singers are way more attractive than japanese, their face are slimmer/thinner, so are their body, long legst etc. I think korean are very blessed with those attribute, it's no wonder they are able to attract more global audiences.....I heard youtube gonna create special channel just for K-POP

how do korean or japanese monetize their popularity since everything on the net is free? most of their pop idol websites still in kanji or hangul, do they have korean or japanese version of itunes where international ppl can download their music for a dollar?

I think they need to do more collaboration, japanese creative artists/song writers/producers collaborate with korean performers/celebrities/\

such as this one, it's good catchy music and performance/dancing

i'm still curious why chinese pop hasn't gotten "big" yet

lots of potential. i guess a big reason is current conditions in china. corrupt as hell gov and still-developing economy don't make conditions for cool pop scene.

That, and because C-pop is really formulaic. The songs are mostly ballads about finding love or losing love, and I've noticed that so many Chinese pop songs follow the same pattern musically to the point where a lot of them sound alike. Also, compared to Jpop and Korean pop, C-pop pales in comparison in the looks and fashion department. Jpop and Korean pop (especially Korean) are really show-offy with crazy/interesting hairstyles and loud, 'fun' clothing. - C-pop has a more grounded, simple look. These things in addition to what you mentioned is what's really stopping C-pop from breaking out.

Chinese have always been more focused on movies when it came to international entertainment. you'd have to be living under a rock to not know that.

LOL theres no way that clown is korean. did you read his description hes making fun of? big wide face/jaw/small eyes? have you seen koreans? hes not korean.

If you prefer the looks of Korean guys/ gals to Japanese or like Kpop better than Jpop, that's OK. Everyone has preferences. I just wanted to add that their is a large international community that find Jpop singers more attractive than Kpop singers. Worldwide Jpop fans prefer Jpop over Kpop. They'll give personal preference reason like you too. It goes both ways. But you won't know about Jpops popularity by looking at Youtube. Youtube is Kpop territory; Jpop labels hire third party companies to police YouTube to take down copy right materials.

Also, Jpop market is huge meaning people buy CD, DVD, Itunes etc... They own high quality copies of music videos, why would they watch them on Youtube? The only time I go to Youtube is when I want to post a link here on AF.

Kpop uses the internet to promote itself. this is a good strategy that's making Kpop popular but provides no revenue. So Kpop depends on concert ticket sales, sponsors, CM and digital distribution. Also, a big part of current Kpop revenue is Japan. Although pirating is growing in Japan, it is tinny compared to the total money spent on CDs, DVD, digital, concerts and marketable items.

Jpop is the second biggest music industry in the world. Since Japan has very little pirating, Jpop industry looks at the internet as its main enemy to their sales. The key source of Pirating of Jpop is the internet. So, Jpop artist do not promote themselves overseas because they are making too much money as is. If the Jpop market shrinks to say 5th~8th, then you will see Jpop artist promote themselves on Asia and world.

There is already some collaboration between the two industries: Bump.y is a Jpop group trained by KARA's production team. H!P almost include a Korean candidate from their Korean auditions but she got cut at the last round. AKB is considering establishing a 48 in Korea just like it has in Jakarta and Taiwan. SMTown voiced it's vision of going global and expand beyond just producing Kpop but produce artist from around the world in any language.

Japanese and Korean music industry companies have been working with each other since the 90s. There is already a well establish network of friends, allies and rivals. Media companies are not bound by nationalistic goals, they seek profit and have no problems working with foreign companies it it's mutually beneficial.

Is there any inevitable necessity to compare J and K pop? Many K-pop singers are part of the J-pop world, too. Distinction has become very ambiguous. KARA sings in both Korean and Japanese and gets songs from both Korean and Japanese songwriters for example. I feel many people tend to make quick uninformed judgements when it comes to entertainment. What do they exactly mean by the "pop" category btw? Some people seem to consider only dance pop idols while others include more. I know popular Japanese Visual Kei bands have a lot of international followers. I'm sure you can find your favorites in both Korean and Japanese music industries in its entirety if you look beyond what's easier to come across. K-pop and J-pop industries adapt to vastly different market situations. Japanese fans even buy HD music videos. As chiuchimu said, there already is a well-established network between Korean and Japanese pop music companies.

It's called the Hallyu wave. And also, Jpop is more geared towards promoting the artist's song as compared to Kpop that is more geared to promoting the artist through the song.

you're absolutely right on the spot!!!
many japan's MV used white or half white artists to sing japanese song, ex: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jsYVKPYEOlQ
while many korean pop's songs are produced by westerners, like swedish song producer or american [Behind the music: What is K-Pop and why are the Swedish getting involved?]
korean strong or selling point is the attractive korean looking celebrities
thus why it also lift up korean plastic surgery industry

It's quite simple actually. The world is shifting into an era when we focus on the development of carnal properties. Contrary to the time when people focused on spiritual development(that was like....2000 years ago), nowadays, real quality in everything is falling, except technology.

People are slowly going on to forget really important stuff like wisdom, value, integrity, loyalty, friendship and whatnot. So, in music, also, it happens. Real artists who work their arses off to create something very valuable are often left in the shadows of unpopularity while people who show off their "beauty" instead of musical ability mostly get the spotlight. It's happening so much that I don't even wanna talk about it.

Seriously, have the "18-" people nowadays even heard of "The Beatles" whose overall sale record still occupies the No.1 place ever since 1960s? Do they know real talented musicians like Mozart? Bach? Or the recent prodigy "Yanni"?

Nobody even cares about musical ability. To them, music has become so cheap that it should be rendered only as "entertainment". And the standards have never been lower.............

More chinese singers write their own songs, some of the big names in Cpop compose all of their songs,Jay Chow,Leehom Wong,Fang Datong ,JJ Lam and etc.Plus chinese dont see this as a pride thing, very few chinese know the fact that 4of the top 10 grossing foreign movies in the US are chinese, and very few realise that all of asia's international movie stars are chinese. If its korean youd see them running around shoving it in everyone's face, claiming it proves koreans are better looking or superior or whatever.lol.

Yes. You're absolutely right!

Before Bruce Lee became famous, any asian appearance in world-famous film is either slave or prostitute. We didn't even get the supporting role like the main actor/actress's friend, associate, etc.

I'm a Burmese and I'll say that the Chinese are the ones who made us proud in the movie industry. Bollywood's got a lot of hits recently and is, probably, the only rival of Chinese movie industry.

Way to go, China!...but we gotta admit that they're still a little left-behind when it comes to music and stuff.
