That wouldnt be realistic.
too many contrasting countries, from really poor to affluent. many of the countries wouldnt even be contributing much due to their economic limitations. some countries dont even have good relations with each other. cant imagine countries like china, korea, japan with giving power to the lesser countries like how it is in the EU today. ie, poland, which isnt considered one of the major european states is in the EU and has as much say as germany cuz their population exceeds 50 million. Even with a smaller union of greater asian states...there would be too many disagreements. korea and japan already share many things in common. they do a lot of business with each other, they have visa exemptions now after cohosting the world cup, both are technological states, one country isnt exactly like 100 times bigger than the other in terms of land size and people, similar governments and culture, they can really benefit from each other, etc. There;s already a lot of cooperation going on between the two countries...unless the island issue or playing down war attrocities comes into play. All the while continuing to have the upper hand against growing rival china. |

Banned Joe mama for making a second account. And yes, I talked to Ben about this before doing this action so it's justified.

QUOTE (CJK @ Sep 4 2005, 12:34 PM) The relationship between korea and japan has cooled in recent times with the exception of some temporary spikes every now and then. These two countries and peoples are also very alike, having many things in common from history to being economic and cultural role models. 2005 also seems to be the year of japan korea friendship year; so i guess weve come a long way. The two economies, militaries and governments continue to work together along with china to some extent. As china continues to rise i believe there will be a need for a counterbalance and it only seems natural that these two nations collaborate into a some sort of NAFTA/NORAD or even a limited EU like entity with the possibility of adding NK when it comes into SK's grasp. I can imagine it being a powerful economic giant combining the 2nd and 11th largest economies, both countries being the only asian states in the OECD and japan already having a spot in the influential group of 8. militaristically, it would be the most technological after the US as well as raising its status as a leading influencial entity in asia. there's also the potential for much further growth if an SK autonomous government were to eventually be set up in the state of NK. i have some doubts that SK won't have the resources to deal with the massive burden of the development of NK on her own when the time comes without the financial backing of US & Japan. NK could also be used as a strategic "beachhead" into influencing/invading China more effectively with their loss of a buffer between sheer commercialism (ok, maybe that's a bit too ambitious). Japan would also gain an upper hand in logistics if a sea tunnel were to be built connecting it to europe via the korean strait. these days it seems korea and japan are progressing with treaties, cultural trade and possible fta, etc so could some sort of alliance be feasible? Please no bs, and ignorant, hypernationalistic drivel... Sounds like a good idea but isn`t there some anti Japanese feeling in Korea? |

I don't mind a korea+japan alliance but if it is aimed at China then I fear the biggest loser will not be China or Japan but Korea.

When you mean alliance, you mean like WWI alliance or Economic friendship alliance?

i mean the two slowly becoming one entity, like the EU. two nations under one name, having a constitution that both governments must abide by, one currency, cooperating in areas of military, science, economy, minimal tree trade at first then expanding...stuff like that.

I doubt Japan and Korea will invade China, unless they have Vietnam and Mongolia on their sides.

CJK, I don't see this type of Asian solidarity happening, at least not within a 50 year time period. There's too much identity and pride in all the countries for them to accept assimilation.

i dont mean to offend other koreans with this sort of proposal, but whether we like it or not EU type alliances are bound to happen. It would make most sense for Asia to be next.
In the future a limited korean and japanese alliance seems realistic if the relationship between the two countries continues to intertwine. There are even more ambitious plans for a East Asian union to include all CJK states, which seem even less likely. I still think we will have an orweillian 1984 type world within this century. |

Even now korea is the most well armed, most built up piece of land that no one could possibly conquer. I mean, china does have a larger military, but korea has lesser amount of land to defend.
