I'm not quite sure what it is you posted charade. If it's your financial situation, then I am impressed.

But still if you have 100k in cash and only earn 17% on it over a 10 year period, it's way too conservative, and even borderline stupid to me. I'm in no position to criticize you on your finances, but it's just my own opinion.

Something like that reminds me of something I saw on the Suze Orman show- She boasted about how she was putting in like 60% of her income into an investment portfolio that yielded nearly 20% interest. But at the same time, she had like $35k in credit card debt that was getting charged 28%. sure.gif

Charade is in similiar field as your girlfriend biggthumpup.gif They're gonna be rich in the future if they make it. You and I better start really picking up the pace, bro!! icon_smile.gif

After four years, I'll most likely be making anywhere between 120 - 180K(realistically, the lower end starting off as an associate at a group practice for 1-2 years) . If I rock the NBDE exams and get into an OMFS or Ortho residency, then potential income would be 250K-300K depending on how I play my cards.

How much of the 100K would you keep in savings and how much would you take out and put into other higher yielding investments?

I like the "120-age=% in stocks" guideline.

I guess I'm more aggressive when it comes to investing, but in my opinion, I don't really think I am since I know a lot of people who are doing options, and some that are just straight up gambling.

Pedo? I dunno, last time I heard, she was doing medical research of some sort. She's either already in or going into med school. She'll be making 6 figures upon graduation whereas engineers like SkylineC83 and I probably need to work at least 10 years in order to make 6 figure salaries, IF LUCKY.

Holy fu-k.

Yeh I know some guys who are pretty much "gambling" their assets away. So desperate for money. And its mainly motivated by pursuit of girls too. $hit. Girls are the devil.

What the fu-k? You'll be making 120 - 180k in 4 years if you make it? Jesus christ. I'll be lucky if I make 70k within 5 years. $hit.

Who the fu-k are asian girls who work in the health care industry supposed to marry? I guess Asian male doctors.

Oh man, we asian male engineers are fu-kED.

the average engineer does not rack up $130k of educational debt. before a doctor sees that six-figure salary, an engineer would have an 8-10 year earning and promotional advantage.

besides, i know plenty of engineers who make six figures.

yeh but doctors/dentists will make more money in the long run. True, some engineers make a $hitload but the majority just make slightly above average salaries. You have to be exceptionally good in order to make a lot of money. And its not always easy to become especially good. Sometimes the opportunity just doesn't come your way.

i dont know much bout the health care industry and i may be ignorant when saying this but it seems like in terms of the amount of effort put in and the difficulty level, engineers and doctors/dentists put in roughly the same amount. True, doctors/dentists need to do it for longer but the payoff is huge.

i mean, anybody who has gone through 4 years of school in the faculty of engineering knows what a freaking hellhole it can be. I mean, at least those students in med school have some eye candy during class. Lots of hot girls and guys in the Sciences. But imagine going to a Calculus III course with 100 guys, most of whom are nerdy and unhygienic, and the few girls that exist in the class, no matter what their attractiveness level is, eventually you daydream about boning them. Trust me, it has happened to us all at one point or another.

Not to mention that doctors/dentists don't really have to update their knowledge significantly throughout their career. The fundamentals are the same. Not so with engineers. There's new $hit coming out with everyday and if you don't stay relatively up to date, you are fu-ked. It's basically a lifetime of learning.

Also, doctors/dentists obviously have more prestige in society. If people ask you what you do and you say you're an engineer, its not that great. Especially if you're an Asian male. They'll be like, "Oh, that explains A LOT." fu-kers.

If I had the interest/inclination and the mental capacity to memorize large amounts of information, I would have rather gone into medicine/dentistry.
