I think bowl of salad is like multiple vegetables/fruits in one bowl, it stay in its original shape/form, this term best to describe multicultural or multiethnic society

while melting pot is like you put all vegetables and fruits into a blender and then blend it, later it form new shape and color but as one, you don't know their origin anymore since it blended

I think by default most minorities want to preserve aspects of their culture and ethnicty. I think its fair to say most fear assimilation from the dominant culture. So naturally many minorities (especially the older generation) discourage thier children from interracial (plus theres inner cultural societal pressures as well).
In the end people are going to have relationships with whomever they like regardless.

I think the dyanamics would be different if people of other races werent minorities in a vastly caucasion society.

Okay... but how many of those mixed race people choose to identify as "biracial" or "multiracial"? I know plenty of whites, blacks, and Hispanics who are heavily mixed, but choose to label themselves by those labels only. In fact, I'd say most minorities are eventually assimilated into one of the above three, or a combination of each. Think of Hawaii... where someone who is Japanese/Hawaiian/Filipino/Irish is not uncommon. Naturally, they'll identify with whichever they grew up around or have most biological influence from.
