At first, I thought Chinese was the most difficult language to learn because of the numerous word characters and the tones that I had to memorize. After trying to learn Japanese and Russian for the first time, I realized that Chinese isn't that difficult. Chinese words don't change whether it's past/present/future tense and the words don't have the masculine/feminine/neutral rule. I actually learned Chinese faster than I learned Japanese and Russian. I'm still struggling with Japanese and Russian because of the rules.

The syntax of the Chinese language isn't hard at all, it's the pronunciation and writing part of it that are really challenging.
But even if you master standard Chinese you can still find difficulties in understanding day-to-day dialogues between 2 Chinese.
Even though most of the Chinese dialects are clustered in Sino-Tibetan linguistic family, the differences between them are quite big and sometimes mutually unintelligible.
