China wants everyone to do physical exercises three times a week within five years, according to a new national fitness program issued by the State Council, the China News Service reported on Thursday.

According to the plan, a system of national fitness will take shape by the year 2015, aiming to enhance people's physical condition and raise the awareness of exercise.

More than 1.2 million sports fields will be opened, making the average exercising ground of 1.5 square meters per person. At least 50 percent of cities and counties should be equipped with fitness facilities, covering more than 50 percent of sub-districts and communities.

In the meantime, the network of fitness organizations will be further strengthened. At least 80 percent of sub-districts and 60 percent of towns should have sports organizations. Also, sports sites should cover general urban communities and at least 50 percent of rural communities.

Students at school will also take physical exercises no less than one hour a day, according to the plan. And the number of elderly and the disabled taking part in exercise should increase.

No the most logical, smartest, greenest, and brilliant idea is to make a bicycle lane, for god-sake.

There's too many cars, make the city more bicycle friendly, bring CBD closer to homes. Give incentive for bike-riders, such as tax-cut, bike-subsidy, pension-bonuses, whatever. It is more cheaper too, than building thousands of domes, that are likely not to be used frequently.

A bicycle lane? We have those in Beijing. They just tend to all be occupied by SUVs and buses.

Though my point is to make the city bicycle-friendly, but yeah I've seen those, only a few cities have it, mostly first-tier to save face to foreigners, and they're not brilliantly regulated.

So many tricycle and bicycle rider dangerously cruising the road with idiotic and clearly untested driver suddenly cutting and swearing.

I think especially for congested city like Beijing should develop their CBD to have a car free-zone up-to certain proximity to encourage workers to use bike or public transport, or something along the line of congestion charges like in London. It should work better than making quota.

Solve the unfitness and the congestion. Kill two birds with one stone.

I hope they don't waste too much money on machines. It would be pretty cool if the government promoted the big 3 lifts and olympic lifting. That's probably highly unlikely though. They'll just promote some useless $hit like walking and doing curls, or both at the same time.
