Cooking with Bitter Melons

Being Filipino, I know we cook some dishes bitter (Ilocano) and bitter melon. I know other Asian peoples cook with it too.

i never got used to eating that stuff. sometimes my dad would cook bittermelon with black bean garlic sauce. i haven't tried it in years now.

My mom makes that soup that has 'em cut in half and stuffed with ground pork, rice vermecelli, black fungus and some other stuff.

^yeah. i only eat in Pinakbet, but i know ilocanos who boil it and use it's juice for pinapaitan.

lol, i use to hate it when i was younger. now i like it. FYI theres a trick, cut it up and soak it in cold water & 2 tb salt for 30 mins in the frig. it takes out some of the bitterness.

Hmm... not a fan of the bitter melon. When I was little, I tried it for the first time without being told what it was or its name -- they said "just eat it!" I had a lemon face for a couple of minutes. To this day I cannot eat the stuff. <wrinkles nose>
