270 years ago? thats not that ancient dude :P Khunsikarinbumrung way more Thai to me than it does Khmer.
I like the article though, its kind of sad that ancient arts are dying out. He should probably start up a workshop to teach this in Cambodia, seeing as the people of Surin don't seem to be interested in anything Khmer anymore. Hey maybe I should pay him a visit, seeing as I'm visiting Cambodia and Thailand later this year. Wee!! This post has been edited by transtic: Feb 3 2005, 10:22 AM |

Hello everybody,
I am here just wondering if khmers people living in Surin province (southern Thailand) used to be khmer territory still keep and maintain our rich culture and custome. I believe there are estimate about 200,000 or 250,000 khmers living in Surin Province and base on fact, they has living there over centuries. I would like to ask anybody who like to share their comment on: - Does younger khmer generation living in Surin see themself as khmer or thai? - In general does all khmer still speak our native lanaguage or they forgotten our lanaguage? - Does most khmers see themeself as khmer- thai? - Does majority of khmer have been influenced by the thai culture? - Does khmers know about history (Ankor Wat and the khmer empire) - Does khmers people still watched khmer movies and musics or thai movies and musics? - Does khmers still celebrate new year in khmer style or not? I am really just wondering in my mind, because currently Cambodia entertaiment such as movies, musics, customs have been influences by the thai's entertainment and culture. Sometimes i watched khmer musics on channel five on friday and sunday evening which runned and sponsored by thai companies i believe, and the music sound not very similar to khmer music but sound 85% of thai music. After watching some of these ridiculous musics, i am quite shocked that many young khmers being influence by the thai musics and the thai modern custome. Entertaiment in Cambodia is very popular especially in Phnom Penh (capital). On friday and sunday the music is live on concerts and many khmers especially young khmers loves to see the concerts. It is clearly shows that many young khmers have been influences badly by the thai culture, thus our prime minister take no action strive to stop that. anybody body have any suggestion about khmer culture and entertaiment, please say so, it is will be lovely to hear! best regards, - |

Why are you care about Kmer culture have influence by Thai Culture. I'm Thai. Do you know the Thai culture have more influence from western culture. But we are stll Thai. The the past, Thai culture had influence from kmer, after that from china and india and then western culture. we take it and adapt it to Thai culture and then that kind of culture become to Thai. People have influence by some culture all time and then the adapt to their own culture.
If you are not accept outside civilisation, Your social become static and not develop. More than 10 years ago, Thai people do not like to see thai movie. Because there have only bad quality movie come into the market. At that time we import alot of Holywood movie into the market. That is happend more than 10 years. And the movie industry become very weak. But there have something change. Five year ago, there have a good movie come from the Thai movie industry and can complete with the foreign movie. After that people like to see thai movie again and the movie industrial develop more advance and now they can export to the world market. You can see Ong-BaK, Tumyumgoog and Suriyothai in the world movie market. And Tony Jaa become the world class super star. If the Thai government ban the foreign movie to help the producer of thai movie. The people will more sufferr from bad quallity movie and we never complet in the world market. No nation loss their culture by contact with the outside. Even they influence from the outsider culture. They have adapt that culture to their own culture. You can see Thai is still Thai, even we have influence by Kmer, chinese, india and western for more than 500 year. We don't lose our culture but we adapt and applied it into our society. |

One more thing I would like to tell Kmer peple. There have no kmer surin in Thailand. There have only people who decent from kmer in that area but they don't think they are kmer. They are thai.
There have chinese decent more around 6-8 million in Thailand. But they are assimilate into thai society and they don't think they are chinese but they think they are Thai. So we don't have a problem about monority in the other part of our country but only in the 3 provinces in the southern. In Esan region, people has a culture language like people in Laos but the don't think they are Laos but Thai. There have 16-18 million people in Isan. The population is more than population in Laos 3 times. In America and Australia prople migrate from every corner of the world. But they don't think they are British, russia, china etc. But they are america. |

Hello Crew,
Do you believe me? I never heard the word "Khmer Surin" in my country (Thailand). Thai people never think in the way like that. The first time that I heard "Khmer surin" is from Khmer website. We know there have a people who live near border of the country are decent from our neighbouring country but we don't call them Khmer surin, laos or Malay. We do not recognize our people like that. If they are born in Thai. They are thai. We don't think they are ethnic group in our society. They are thai who can speak two languages.I can speak Laos like Loas in Luangphrabang. (I'm not Isan, but in the central region) But I'm thai. There have no Khmer surin at all in Thailand. Even Khmer people try to pursuade them that they are decent from Khmer but they don't think like that. |

Yes there still some old folks there who still think they are khmer except the newer generation. The khmer surin think they are now Thais because Thai economically way better off than Cambodia and more popular-they are the betrayors to their own people. |
