QUOTE Bush Nominee Urges Readiness to Defend Taiwan
Associated Press November 30, 2006 WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush's nominee for defense secretary said the U.S. must prepare its military to resist if China attacks Taiwan. Robert Gates, a former director of the Central Intelligence Agency chosen by Mr. Bush to succeed Donald Rumsfeld as defense chief, said that although China appears to want a peaceful merger with Taiwan, Beijing is boosting its military in case of a war with the island. "We should maintain our capabilities to resist China's use of force or coercion against Taiwan and assist Taipei in maintaining its self-defense," Mr. Gates said in testimony submitted Tuesday to the Senate Armed Services Committee, which is to hold a confirmation hearing for Mr. Gates next week. U.S. officials believe China's military buildup is intended to back up threats to attack Taiwan, the self-ruled island that Beijing claims as its own territory. The two sides split in 1949 amid civil war. China vows to keep the island from independence by force if necessary. The U.S. has pledged to provide Taiwan the means to defend itself, and Mr. Gates's comments echoed U.S. policy. Mr. Gates said China, as it works toward its goal of becoming Asia's pre-eminent power, is "expanding its political and economic influence in the region and generating options for military coercion." But China's "near-term focus is on generating sufficient combat power to rapidly erode Taiwan's will to resist and to deter or deny effective intervention in a cross-Strait conflict," Mr. Gates said. The U.S. and China have recently cooperated on attempts to rid North Korea of nuclear weapons, and Mr. Gates praised Beijing for that, as well as for "improved behavior on proliferation" and "increased transparency." But criticism of China far outweighs praise in Washington. Complaints include accusations that Beijing curbs its citizens' freedoms and encourages economic policies that cost American jobs. source: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1164847112...whats_news_asia |

^as i said many time before, declaring formal independence isn't the only thing that would trigger an attack from the ccp. plus, the ccp has an agenda to follow, gotta live up to their own propaganda. i doubt they'll be willing to keep waiting.

^i think the chinese COMMUNIST party would much rather be labeled as COMMUNIST than say, authoritarian or totalitarian, which are probably descriptions that are more suitable for today's CCP.

Yeah, having a capitalist economy doesn't really say anything about the government, however they can insist anything but mixed with capitalism it can never be real communist. As capitalism "depends on people being basically selfish" and communism "depends on human nature being basically altruistic". And "some" people are not only calling China communist because its a name, but also take the point of communism into their argument.

The CCP is communist by name only. In all honestly, that's all it is, and that's all it ever was.

The truth is, CCP never claimed CHINA as a communist country, we've been "brainwashed" that CHINA of today is a socialist country but the truth is that even a child of 12 year old knows the truth. The actual government is quite efficient and I am pretty much happy with it. The title of CCP could be changed in a matter of twenty years or so. Be prepared for a changing CHINA and stop insulting it with a term of merely historical meanings. If the situation just swaps, i mean being ROC holding the mainland and the PRC in Taiwan, ROC would not allow the formal independence of "People's Republic of Taiwan" either. Be it in those backwards and poor regions in the center, or other déjà developed cities like Shanghai. Stupid peasant revolution was trying to destroy our culture, in those stupid years, but not now! you have to understand that people change, so do a country. The CCP of nowadays are not like its predecessors of the 60th, they are not at all eager communists, they do not at all love the idea of expressing communism all over the world, they focus on the developement of the country and are busy dealing with China's internal problems caused by a wrong social structure. It is the debt we have to pay, for a long time. You can bash the formal Chinese government and stupid peasant commies for what they've done before, i too hate them, but there's nothing we can do about it now. As for the national integrity, just as i said before, every country would claim likewise for its national interest. |
