CHAPTER 7

August 27, 04

“Yo,” Tien asked as they sat on the couch watching TV.

“What you want?” Tram said, munching on her popcorn.

Tien: Why didn't your parents come to the engagement party? My father sent an invitation to your house.

Tram: ... how should I know?

Tien: ...um, because you're their daughter? and they're your parents?

Tram: (laughed) They're my parents? Huh, if they're my parents, they would never sent me to Vietnam and tell me to marry you.

Tien: What? You don't like me? Aw, I'm sad.

“Run to your moma and cry then,” Tram snickered.

Tien: Nice, but I don't think I'll do that.

Silence...

“Have you talked to your parents?” Tien asked.

Tram looked at the screen. Her mind flashed back to the conversation she had with her step- mother during the first day she came; that was the only time that she called. Tears filled Tram's eyes as she stared at the floor, seeing the unforgettable memories that she longed to get out of her mind, the things that happened when she was back in the od state. Her body trembled; Tram tried to hide it.

Tien saw but couldn't comfort her because he has never been an emotional person. He thought and thought, then found the solution.

Tien: You're not the only person who hate your parents, you know. Besides, we won't be together for a long time. After I take over my father's company, we can get a divorce. You can do anything you want then.

Tram: ... Are you sure that would work? Is that possible?

Tien: It better be. I never wanted an arrange marriage. I already have someone on my mind.

Tram: [You really hate me that much?]
“Fine with me,” Tram said, as they ended their conversation.

CHAPTER 8

September 1, 04

It was a hot summer day. While Tram was walking around the neighborhood, she heard reverberation of clattering cans and voices forming from the dark alley.

A boy, about 16 years old, was holding a big bat in his hand, exclaimed, “give me all your money!”

“We don’t have any, ---cries—please don’t hurt us!”

Tram: [Lien and Linh!] (These girls are 13 years old)

“Hey dwarf, why don’t you go pick on somebody your own size?” Tram yelled out. Her hands griped firmly, ready to give the gangster- wannabe a lesson.

The little boy looked at her in terror. He threw the bat aside and scampered away.

Tram approached and kneeled down before the girls, “hey, what are you guys doing here?”

Lien, who was still crying, softly said, “we…. we miss our brother…we wanted to see him….”

“Um…well, he’s not here right now. How about we go and get some ice cream? Would that make you guys feel better? We’ll wait until Tien comes back, ok?” Tram smiled.

She bought ice cream for the girls and they started walking back to the apartment.

Linh: Chi (sister) Tram, do you love anh (brother or an older guy, like oppa) Tien?

Tram: Um….no….I like him… as a friend….Why did you ask?

Linh: Because chi Diem---.

“Shut up,” Lien interrupted.

*Thump thump thump* Tram’s heartbeat.

“What about chi Diem?” Tram asked Linh.

Linh: Well….um…um…. long ago….we heard a promise that….chi Diem made to anh
Tien….that she’ll marry him….when she returns---.

“Do you know who you’re talking to?” Lien muttered, annoyed.

“I don’t care! I just wanted to clear things out!” Linh yelled.

Tram: “It’s ok Lien, I just want to know… so who’s chi Diem?

Linh: Our parents adopted her about 10 years ago. She was the smartest, prettiest, and nicest person in the family…. everybody loved her. One day, when Lien and I were playing around the house, we saw anh Tien and chi Diem….um… kissing…. though that time we had no idea what was happening between them. But then chi Trang’s real parents showed up and took her. After that, anh Tien transformed into a different person… he…he became colder towards people and he always yells at us… and now we realize that anh Tien and chi Diem love each other. It’s been 3 years now; Chi Diem hasn’t returned… and anh Tien’s still the same… We… we…. hope that maybe you can change him…

Lien: Please do it for us….we really really miss our old brother….—cries— It’s been so long….

“ Hey hey it’s ok…. don’t cry. Tell you what, I promise you guys that I’ll try my best to change him, ok?” Tram caressed them.

Lien: Yea! You can do that during your two weeks vacation in California!

Tram: [????] What vacation?

Lien: Our parents decided that you guys needed to spend more time together instead of you staying home and anh Tien always working. They said you two should take some time off and go enjoy yourselves.

Tram: Did anh Tien know about this?

Lien: Yes, couple of days ago.
[… and he didn’t even tell me… Damn, how could he not see his poor sisters’ burdens? That creep.]

Thanks for reading, for those who really read this story... I'll try to post the chapters every saturday ehehe

CHAPTER 9
September 30, 04

*** I am determining to change Tien’s attitude back to the way they were in the past. Why? I don’t know. There’s something that convinced me to do it; I’m really curious of the outcome. I guess, in some way, I wanted him to share all his feelings to me… his anger… his grief … just everything. I want to know all. Today, we’ll be going to California for our break. I have no plans whatsoever but let's just say that whatever comes will come. I don't like the idea of going with him. He treats me like a fool... what's up with that?***

Tien knocked on Tram’s door, “hurry up!”

“Hold on!” Tram breath heavier as she ran around her room, gathering whatever she has into the petite suitcase. (notice how she just started packing ^_^)

Tien’s driver drove them to the airport.

Even the girls in the airport were staring at him. They smiled and stared flirtatiously through their thick make- up, it grossed Tram out.

[Urgh….disgusting…(Sigh)… This is why I never get involve with good looking guys… they’re just too popular with the girls… jerks… and now I’m stuck with him.]

“Get away,” Tram snarled.

“Don’t need to yell at the pretty ladies, just tell me you’re jealous then I'll tell them to stop,” Tien said.

Tram almost hurled.

“Come on, let’s go or we’ll be late,” Tram urged him, pretending that she didn't hear that.

They sat near each other on the plane. Tram was so worn-out that the moment she sat down, she fell asleep. Few hours later, Tram woke up and saw Tien’s head on her shoulder.

She gently moved his head to the other side.

*Thump* (Tien’s head bumped on Tram’s shoulder.)

Tram moved his head. *Thump*

She moved his head again… *Thump*

Tram: Argh…. Tien… wake up (she whispered in his ear)… Tien… Tien wake up (she shaked him….still no response…getting exasperated) Wake up now or I’m gonna punch in the face… WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!

…You could say that all the people on the plane who were sleeping woke up… their red, flaring eyes looked fiercely up at her…but none of their eyes met Tram's.

Tien: What do you want??!!!

Tram: You head was on my shoulder.

Tien: So?

Tram: So, stop banging your gigantic head on my shoulder. It’s really numb right now because of you…

“Man… I was having a great dream … and you ruined it,” Tien grumbled, touching his head and trying to fix his 'perfect' hair!

“Ha. Ha… whatever,” Tram said, “look, I really want to enjoy our vacation so let’s not argue anymore ok?”

“(yawned)It’s just a two weeks vacation, why would you want to have a good time?” Tien mocked.

Tram: Because I’ve been staying at your damn apartment for a whole 3 freakin’ months! (Getting irated) Everyday when I come home from work, I’d have to cook for you and clean around the house…. and you know… I realized you only clean your room… yea… just left other rooms and let me do the cleaning. Was it because I told you that I used to clean houses? Oh, never mind, I get it. You want to ---

Tien: Will you zip your big mouth?! Do you have to bring up every topic and ask me every question that you could think of? That’s really getting on my nerves….

“Oh, I'm sorry,” Tram said sarcastically, “but it's the truth.”
Well….. you wanna ask me any questions about myself? Since I asked you 'every question that I could think of' already?
[In order for him to trust me, I need to open myself up first …]

“…. Why would you want to do that?” Tien asked Tram suspiciously.

Tram: No reason, come on….ask me, anything.

Tien: No, I don’t want to know anything about you.

Tram: Ask me.

Tien: Ok…what do you used to do back then when you were in Texas?

Tram: I do things like a ‘normal’ person would…duh!! Ya, I hanged out with friends…[do housework that my mom trained me to] go to school… partying… clean houses… getting people piss off… fight with some of the snobby girls at school… stuff like that….

Tien: You like causing trouble, don’t you?

Tram: Sure, it’s enjoyable.

Tien: No guys?

Tram: ....

Tien: You ever loved someone before?

Tram: …. once.

Tien: What happened?

Tram: ….nothing happened…I moved to Vietnam… and haven’t seen him since….

Tien: You still have feelings for him?

Tram: I dunno… why the heck are you asking me about my private life?! Ask me something else…

Tien: Hey, you said I could ask you anything….

Tram: Well….anything except that… don’t you think that’s just too personal?

Tien: (Sigh) Whatever, I’m gonna work on my papers now.

Tram: ……..

“Do you have anything I can do? I’m bored… Can I see those papers?” Tam asked, pointing her index finger over a pack of papers in front of Tien.

Tien: (Laughe) Are you kidding me? Those are my work papers and it’s important. I don’t want you to mess them up.

“ I’m not gonna mess them!!! Please, I’m bored to death here!! It’s not like I’m gonna tore or scribbled on every piece of paper just because I’m bored!! I just want to look at them….please???” Tram said, then tried to make her puppyish face.

“Here,” Tien said, holding a book, “you can read this if you want.”

Tram looked at the book and recognized what it was immediately, “it’s an English dictionary, you dummy! Do you expect me to read it all of it??!!” Tram shrieked. Tien chuckled from inside.

[Hahaha, it feels so good making her mad.]

Tien: Whatever, just shut up so I can do my work. You’re making us looks weird…try to be polite when we’re around people.

Tram: ………………. hmph…

Twenty hours passed, the plane landed and they went to Miyako Hotel, where Tien’s parents had instructed him.

Both of them were so drained out that the first thing they did was sleep. Tram slept on the sofa while Tien slept on the bed.

CHAPTER 10 A
The next day, they went shopping. Tram despairingly paced alone on the wide hall of the mall. Tien had left her to go buy some things for himself. She went into a book store and looked for her favorite books; one of her favorite was A Walk to Remember… Tram walked out the store 45 minutes later and strolled around the mall. One guy caught her attention. He was talking to about 10 girls, standing around him…. Even though his back was facing her… he still looks familiar...but where had she see him before, she doesn’t remember. He wouldn't be a guy that she would like to get to know, but it seems that she had met him before.

Tram walked closer and closer to him… then images of the person flasheed through her mind. She still remember those shoulders… hair….back…It was Andrew, the guy she once fell in love with… the guy that she dreamed and thought about for one month…and finally was able to forget him. She told herself that ‘love’ was never meant to be for her…everybody hated her….love is just too complicated, she thought.

Andrew felt a stare from behind him and turn around, “Tram?” He was surprised seeing her here… surprised that she had changed, so gorgeous that the moment he set his eyes on hers, it took his breathe away, but he didn’t showed it… “Tram, what are you doing here?”

“I should ask you the same thing,” Tram gulped, not believing she was standing in front of Andrew.

Andrew walked away from the girls and seized Tram by her hand and they took off, running as fast as they can. Tram didn’t say anything but kept looking intently at him. They arrived into a clothing store.

“What’re you doing here?” Tram asked, trying to catch her breath.

Andrew: Nothing, I just wanna get away from those girls. They were driving me insane…

[He has changed…]

Andrew was once a normal guy. His attitudes were similar to Tram’s, that’s why they were so close to each other. They were buddies, sometimes acted like lovers for God knows why….but there’s always this mix emotions that confused them…is it love or just a friendly love they had for each other? … And that moment…they both know the answers…

When looking at Andrew, Tram doesn’t seem to know him anymore. His features had change. His dark, brown hair was now longer and straighter. The sun peeped through the glass and shined on top of their heads. His styles of clothes also change. From the look of it, Tram knew that Andrew had become popular. He was hot, she admitted, but…it doesn’t look right. It seems like he wasn’t the one whom she knew long ago.

Andrew: So where’ve you been? You told me you’re going to Vietnam and you didn't return.

Tram: Wth are you doing here?

Andrew: I moved here about 2 months ago, all the girls been following me everywhere I go! Can you believe that?

Tram: Oh plz…what has happen to you?

“Just got a little ‘make over’ by my cousin…Ya like it?” Andrew asked, showing her his sexy smiles and body. Tram laughed.

[He’s still the same…haha. I feel so comfortable talking to him…I’m glad my feelings for him are gone…]

Tram: Yes, you’re a hunk.

“You think so?” Andrew grinned, eyeing Tram as he stood closer…and closer, trying to kiss her.

“Enough with that,” Tram smiled wanly, “don’t do anything stupid…people are looking…”

Andrew held her into his arms, “you know, I really miss you when you left,” he said sincerely. “I thought I’d never see you again…haha…I was gonna go to Vietnam to find you and bring you back…”

“I’m surprised,” Tram looked into his eyes, “you never said anything so…meaningful and sweet like that before.”

“That’s because I miss my baby girl so much that I have to force myself to tell the truth,” Andrew said softly.

*End of their sweet moment*

“Oh cut the crap,” Tram laughed, wringing herself away from him, “and don’t call me a baby girl ever again or I’m gonna whip yo butt.”

“I’m sorry ma’am,” Andrew replied, trying to smile.

[But I really did mean what I said…I guess you just don’t understand…the feelings that I kept for so long in order to maintain our friendship… damn… I love you…do you know how hurt and upset I was when you left me?]

“So how’s life treating you?” Tram asked as she cross her arms onto her chest.

“My life changed a bit but still good… the girls are wild about me ah-humm…my old man just bought a mansion here…and I just bought a new Mustang!

[Except…you’re not here by my side… because I need you.]

Tram: Oh dang, really... you always want a Mustang! Dude, that's tight. I should've gone with you and check out those Mustangs. Argh, damn.

Andrew: Hahah yea. And how about you? Wait, let me guess, good? Since you’re out of that house, you probably---

“Hahah, no. I got…um…engaged to this 'anonymous' guy in Vietnam,” Tram said as they started walking out the shop. “I’ve never met him in my life…and just like that… it’s like I got sold by my parents…haven’t seen them since I left Texas either….”

Andrew froze, “w…w…what?!!”

“Uhh….I’m….I’m getting married. It’s unbelievable, yea I know.” Tram said, looking down at the floor as they walked.

“Really, (Tram nodded) damn them…next time I see those asses (Tram’s parents) I’m gonna cut their heads off.” He gritted his teeth.

There were…sadness and rage in Andrew’s eyes, but Tram didn’t know. He was sad because being separated from Tram for 3 months wasn’t enough but now he had completely lost her. Andrew was mad because of Tram’s parents, handing her over like some object…of course, he knows how her parents treated her, but this is just too much for her to handle. A weak like her, he thought, would never wanted to live again after that.

Tram: Hey, it’s alright. I wish I could beat my parents’ up or sumtin…to cease my anger…but I wouldn’t do that if I have a chance to…

Andrew: Well, you want me to get rid of them for you? I would gladly help.

Tram laughed, “you’re serious huh? (Sigh) I wish I could say yes but no thanks. They’re still my parents and I have to agree on any decisions that they make.”

Andrew stared at Tram with wide eyes, “damn girl, what has happen to you these last few months? You’re not an independent type of person that I used to know.”

Tram: I don’t know what the hell’s going on anymore. My life’s over now…ya know what I mean? There’s no use to try and fix it.

Andrew: …..so when’s the wedding?

Tram: I don’t know, but it’s going to be soon…life sucks…everything’s going against me.

Andrew: You know you can still get out of this…I’ll help you if you want…

“I’ll take care of it by myself…” Tram responded. “Gosh! I miss you so much! It’s so freaking boring in Vietnam. You should come to Vietnam and hang out with me some time so I won’t die out of boredom!”

They kept on walking as Andrew place one of his hand over Tran’s shoulder. Suddenly Tram heard someone called out her name from afar. She looked and saw Tien, running toward her.

CHAPTER 10 B
“Do you know I’ve been looking for you?!!” Tien asked, gasping for air, “we were supposed to meet up an hour ago!”

“Sorry, I forgot,” she said, without caring about Tien’s condition.

“Sorry? Sorry? That’s all you have to say? What if you got raped? Kinapped? Or killed? Do you know how much trouble I’ll be in?” Tien’s anger was now flared up.

“Yea yea yea, only care about yourself….”Tram muttered under her breath.

“Hey, chill out, you don’t want to get beat up do you?” Andrew crossly said.

Tien: Who’re you?

Tram: This is---

“I’m her ex- boyfriend,” Andrew lied, but Tram didn’t care.

There were weird sensations in the atmosphere as both guys stared at each other. Tram nudged Andrew’s arm but he ignored her.

“For God’s sake! Will you idiots stop it? I’m on my vacation right now and no one’s going spoil my good mood, understand?” She screamed then stomped off.

Tien and Andrew ran after her and tried to calm her down. Sometimes they would glare up to show their hatred to each other.

“Tram, come on. We’re going home.” Tien said, grabbing her wrist.

“She’s not going anywhere with you,” Andrew declared.

Tien: She’s my fiancée so I can do anything I want with her; it’s none of you business.

Tram: Hey hey!!! I’m not like one of your possessions. I have my own rights so don’t you go and say that you jerk!

“Come on, let’s ---,” Tien tried to grabbed Tram’s arm again when she flung her hands away from his.

“If you touch her again, I swear I will f&ckin kill you,” Andrew sneered at Tien.

Tram realized that Andrew’s anger was now off the top. There were two times in Andrew’s life Tram knew that he had been mad like this. The first was when his mother, the person that he valued so much, died. The second was when Tram got beaten up badly by her parents when she was about 10 years old. And instead of trying to kill Tram’s parents, Andrew punched some kids at school to release his fury.

Tram: Cool it Andrew.

Andrew: Is this how he treated you every single day?

Tram: No…Andrew, let’s go, I need to talk to you…Tien, I’ll be back.

Tien and Andrew walked over to a corner. Tram looked up at him and could se the veins
running through his forehead and hands; she was scared.

“Look, I told you that I’ll take care of everything so just mind your own business ok?” Tram blurted out, “I know you want to help me but please…for once…don’t…I’m a big girl now and I’ll do what I think is right.”

Silence…

Andrew: You’re going home with him?

Tram: Yea, duh…where am I suppose to go if I don’t stay with him?

Andrew: You can move in to live with me…and my old man if you want.

Tram: Thanks for the offer but I’ll pass.

Andrew: Can I come and visit you tomorrow?

“NO,” Tram said, remembering the promise that she made to Lien and Linh.

“Why?” Andrew frowned.

Tram: Because I have an important job that I need to do.

Andrew: I thought you’re here to relax.

Tram: I am but I’m also doing something else.

Andrew: ….like….??

Tram: I can’t tell you…

“Why the hell can’t you tell me? It’s so hard to get answers from you nowadays.” Andrew whined.

Tram laughed, “sorry honey, but you gotta live with it… give me your cell phone number
so I can call you…”

Andrew wrote down on a piece of paper and gave it to her.

“Now give me yours.”

Tram scoffed, “yeah right, I know you’re gonna call me every seconds just to bother me.
Bye loser.”

While Tram was walking, she suddenly felt herself swung around by Andrew’s strong force. He was hugging her. It seems like he doesn’t want Tram to leave him…again.
Tien was standing, looking at them talking and smiling at each other. He didn’t know why, but the moment when Andrew embraced Tram, he had an urged to come over and hit Andrew, but he stopped himself immediately. Tien knew why he was acting like this…because he was jealous…but of what? He doesn’t know.

[I already have Diem in my heart but why did I felt my heart ache when that bastard hugged her?...and it was just a hug…just a friendly hug…and…God! If it’s more than a friendly hug I wouldn’t care either!..........................would I?]

“Let’s go,” Tram said, interrupting his thoughts.

In the car…

Tien: I’m sorry.

Tram: For what?

Tien: For yelling at you…

Tram: Ok… apology accepted.

Tien: and….? Do you want to tell me something also?

Tram: Tell you what? I don’t have anything to tell you.

Tien: So you’re saying you’re not going to say sorry for what you did?

Tram: Yea I did that like um…an hour ago… You deaf or something?

Tien: Well…I know you didn’t mean it…

Tram: So? I said I’m sorry.

“You’re a hard- headed girl,” Tien said, not bother to argue back.

“I’m known for that,” Tram smiled proudly.

“I’m sure…,” Tien said quietly.

Tien: So…is that the guy that you loved back there?

Tram: …….

Tien: ….I’ll take that as a yes…So you still have feelings for him?

“Argh!!! Would you shut up?!! You’re making my head hurt. I knew we’re going to fight no matter what….” Tram said, messing up her hair.

Tien: Fighting makes life more exciting. You ever heard love stories about couples that first hated each other but then their feelings grew into love instead?

Tram: Well, I doubt it’s gonna happen to us. Cuz right now what I’d like to do is to choke you up with something so that you’ll keep your stinking mouth SHUT.

Tien laughed.

CHAPTER 11

October 10, 04

One week passed by quickly and Tram recognized that she hasn’t done anything for Tien to open up to her, except the fact that Tien was now …nicer to her.

“So where are we going today?” Tram yawned as she walked out her room, didn’t bother
to cover her mouth.

“We’re going skating today,” Tien said.

“W…what? B…but I don’t know how to skate…” Tram sputtered. She was now awake.

“…I’ll teach you then. It’s been so hot outside, so I thought we’d go ice skating for a
change,” Tien said, gazing up at her from the TV screen.

“You sure you want to teach me? Cuz I’m a bad student,” Tram bantered.

“Then I guess I’ll have to be stricter,” Tien shot back.

“…do we really have to go???” Tram complained.

At the skating rink…

“Slowly slide…step up…down…slide…” Tien demonstrated, “now you do it.”

“Easy,” Tram said but then she fell on her butt and yelped out the agony.

Tien snickered, “I told you it’s gonna be hard.”

“Urgh…I hate this already,” she mumbled.

“Now,” Tien said as he came up from behind and hold her arms, “you need to take one step at a time, don’t rush into it or you’ll fall on your butt again.”

Tram’s body shivered the minute she felt Tien’s warm breath against her neck. She couldn’t concentrate. The feelings …it’s so awkward…and that was why she almost fell down…just when Tien grabbed her waist, lightly pulling her upward. Tram’s face reddened by his movement. Tien knew his action had caused strange sentiments between them but ignored. Tram also tried to disregard it but it worsened. Each time that she knocked down, it’s either she fell on top of Tien, Tien fell on top of her, or her butt collide onto the ice floor. This time, Tien fell on top of Tram. Their faces brushed against each other…and Tram couldn’t stop blushing.

Tram: Uh…I think we should stop now, I’m not learning anything. I’ll forget it afterward anyways.

Tram realized that they had been skating 3 hours long…Her feet were bruising up badly but she concealed it from Tien. When they got to the hotel that evening, Tran went into her room and took off her shoes. She fell into a deep sleep instantly.

Later…

Tien quietly opened Tram’s door and sauntered into her room. He saw Tram sleeping on the bed, like a baby. She looked…pale, like a ghost. Tien removed the blanket below Tram’s body and examined her feet. He had noticed how Tram walked when they went out the skating rink and into the hotel. Tien had suspected something wrong with her feet after the long hours of skating. And there, he saw Tram’s feet covered with dried blood, bruises around and on top of her toes. He winced at the contusion. Tien picked a towel with warm salt water and gently caressed it on both her feet, trying not to wake her up, but she did. Tram sat up ad saw Tien.

“Just lie down,” Tien said soothingly. Tram followed his order.

“Are you mad?” Tram murmured.

“No,” Tien lied. Yes, he was very upset. Why didn’t she tell him that she’s hurt? She
should’ve said something…

“You were so eager to teach me, I just couldn’t refuse,” Tram smiled.

Tien: Well, did you like my lessons?

Tram: It was ok. You talked too much though.

Tien: A teacher’s gotta do what he gotta do.

Tram: Still…you talked more than most teachers I know.

Tien chuckled, “stay here, I’ll go buy something for us to eat,” then left.

Tien reappeared later and with him were bags of hamburgers and French fries. Tram frowned.

Tram: You faggot, don’t you know it’s unhealthy to eat those? Can’t you order something nutrimental for a change?!

Tien: Just eat or you can starve to death.

Tram threw fries at Tien out of ire, Tien threw one back, and Tram threw one back at him... (then you know what happen don’t you?...French fries fight!!!!…hehe …)

After what it seem like forever, they stopped. Tram’s whole room now smelled like French fries. Tien called up the cleaning ladies to clean to mess up. And because there were no rolling chairs or wheelchairs, Tram was force to let Tien carry her out the room…Her heart was beating for him…and now…now Tram knew that…she had fallen in love with him.

CHAPTER 12

October 13, 04

“Is is really love or lust?” she asked herself again. True, she has never had such strong feelings toward a guy before, but Tien? (laughed) For God's sake, he's a bastard, a player, a freak!

[Something is wrong with me. I've seen girls he dated and I admit that they're gorgeous. I'm no one special to him, just some bum that he feels sorry for. So why am I making a big deal out of it? I hate myself for thingking this.]

She told herself, but the image of his gorgeous face, his dazzling eyes, and his clear, dark, brown hair invaded her mind.

[Yes Tram, you'll never find true love, not in a million year, so give up already!]

*knock knock knock*

“What?!” Tram screeched.

The door opened and Tien entered.

Tien: Geez, what the hell's wrong with you? You've been grumply lately.

“Sh*t! Would you just leave me alone?” Tram shrieked, feeling mix emotions that caused raise up her anger.

Tram walked out, ignoring Tien's eyes.

Tien: Where are you going?

“Out,” Tram said, with simply one word.

“Your feet's still hurt. Stay inside.” Tien demanded. He was worried about her.

“Why don't you mind your own business? I want to go out,” Tram shot back and stormed out, leaving Tien with a confuse look.

[Damn, why did she have to be so stubborn about everything?]

Tien waited for Tram that night. But he refused to admit to himself that he was waiting for her. At midnight, Tram came in. In her arms were two packs of beer. She was drunk. Her laughter echoed throughout the hotel.

“OMG... you drank seven bottle of beer?” Tien asked in amazement.

Tram nodded her head crazily.

As Tram was about fall, Tien took her by his arms and led her to the sofa. Tien suddenly felt a droplet of liquid fell down his hand. He looked at Tram's face. Her eyes were watery and swollen red. She sniffed her nose.

“I'm a stupid, worthless person,” she mumbled.

“Tram,” Tien said, lifting Tram's chin up to his level. She looked at him while she cried. “Tell me what's wrong.”

“What's wrong? What's wrong? Everything's wrong! You, my f*cking parents, everybody in this damn world!” Tram yelled.

Tien suddenly felt an urge to embrace Tram, and he did. Tram cried uncontrollably in his arms. Tien could feel his shirt wetted with her tears; Tram was oblivious.

“I was born to be in misery, you know that?” Tram whispered enough for Tien to hear her, “my parents never wanted me to be in their lives, nobody wanted me. I told myself that one day... one day I'll have my revenge. But I don't think I can do that at all. They even sold me to you... and the same thing happened, you hate me. I thought I would be happy away from my parents, but I was wrong. My life is meaningless. Tien, why am I still here?”

Tram pushed Tien away from her, feeling the anger than she longed to tell him.

“I don't want your pity, got it? Don't pity me, just leave me alone. I want my life back... my life from 15 years ago.”

Tram cried.

Tram's words stabbed Tien's heart like a knife. He understood her feelings. Tears fell down fell down from his eyes.

[Don't, Tram. Look at you... so unvunerable. It hurts me. Why are you acting like this?]

“Stop it, Tram. You're drunk.” Tien said firmly.

“What're you talking about?” I'm not drunk! You're crazy! hahaha!” Tram laughed through her tears.

“It's late, you should go to sleep now,” Tien said soothingly.

“No! I want to stay up late tonight!” Tram whined, “let's dance!” But Tien had already pushed Tram into her room. She dropped herself on the bed and fell asleep. Tien gently touched Tram's face.

[So beautiful... yet so sad... the sorrow in your eyes that tells me so...]

CHAPTER 13 icon_wink.gif

Octor 16, 04

[Tien has been silent these last few days. Was it something I said or did that I didn't know about? I remember the last time I was mad at him... was I drunk? I'm not so sure... and curse him, didn't tell me a thing about what happened!]

Tram thought as she comfortably sitting on the plane, glancing at Tien, who was busying with his stupid work! She turned her head the opposite direction. Her mind wander off somewhere until she fell to sleep.

------------

“Wait for me!” Tram yelled as they got off the plane. Tien kept walking ahead as if he wanted to keep a distance from her. They didn't talk in the limousine or at the apartment until the next day.

Tien was in his business suit when Tram came out from her room.

[Dang it, why did he has to be so handsome?]

Tram scratched her head.

“You look like a zombie,” Tien said, then sipped the hot coffee into his mouth.

“Thanks a bunch,” Tram said sarcastically.

Tien: Anyway, my mother called yesterday. She asked when you'd like to go shopping for a wedding dress.

Tram scoffed, “'never' would be nice.”

Tien: You understand that every women would kill you to be in your place?

Tram: But I'm not one of those women, am I? I'm sure most of them only think about your money and your freakin looks.

Tien: Oh, so are you admitting that I look good?

Tram: Dude, I did not say that.

“Oh?” Tien smiled wickedly.

Tram: What I'm--- what I'm trying to say is that those are the reasons why they like you. But me? Haha, you gotta be kidding to be thinking that I like you. I'm not blind, and i'm not stupid either. Please, I hate you.

Tien busted out laughing.

Tram: Wha--- what?”

“Nothing,” Tien said.

Tram: Then why are you laughing?

Tien: Nothing.

Tram: Screw you. I'm not talking anymore.

Tien took out his cell phone and dialed a number.

“Hey mom, how are you?” Tien asked.

“Honey! I'm great! How are you doing? Do you need something?”

“No, it's just that Tram said she wanted to talk to you. She misses you.”

Tram slowly turned her head toward Tien. Her eyes were as red as fire.

“Here, talk to my mother,” Tien gave Tram his cell phone.

“Hell no! I did not tell you to do that!” Tram yelled.

“Hello? Is there something wrong?” Mrs. Nguyen curiously asked over the phone.

Tien threw the phone at Tram.

“You can do anything with it. Hang up if you want.”

“What the heck! It's your crap! Take it!”

“No, I'm gonna go to the restroom.” Tien said.

Tram knew his intention. She followed him but was stopped by the closed restroom's door.

[Argh, I can't stand him! I specifically told him I don't want to talk to his mother!]

“You freakin bastard! Damn it!” Tram pounded the door. She cleared her throat.

“Hello, mother! How are you?” Tram brightly changed her tone.

“Sweetie, I'm fine. Is there something wrong between you two?”

Tram: No, not at all. We were watching a movie.

Mrs. Nguyen: Oh, I'm glad to know that. So what do you want to talk about?

Tram: Well, about the wedding dress, would this Friday be alright with you?

Mrs. Nguyen: Of course, of course. I'm not so busy that day. I'll pick you up then we'll go, alright? Oh, and ask Tien to come too, he'll have to buy a suit. I have to go now, honey. You have a nice day.”

Tram: Have a nice day to you too mother.

“So?” Tien asked Tram from behind.

“So, what the crap was that?” Tram sneered at him.

Tien: That 'crap' was nothing.

[Urgh, I so want to slap him.]

“Your mother said you need to go also,” Tram said, ignoring his statement.

“Great, damn, when? What time?” Tien asked.

Tram: I forgot. Go figure it out.

Tien: What the...

Tien sighed. He knew he shouldn't get involve with Tram too much. If he continue on talking to her, he would started to having feelings for her (which he already did). But he couldn't resist it! He couldn't resist her! It's just something about her that made him like this. He was slowly turning into a different guy.

CHAPTER 14

October 18, 2004

“Will you hurry up? My mother's waiting outside,” Tien yelled.

Tram: Aiya, I am! Hold on a sec!

Tien: Hurry up!

Tram: Shut up!!

At the store...

Tram felt her eyes were going to drop down onto the ground. Before her stood thousand of wedding dresses. All with different styles and colors. She was mesmerized by it. It made her eyes hurt when staring at it too long. Nevertheless, she hated wearing dresses, but she loved looking at them. That was the first time that she has ever seen so many beautiful dresses.

[Shoot... does this mean I have to try all of them?!]

Tram sighed.

“This is great, just great,” she mumbled to herself.

Mrs. Nguyen sat before the couple as they went around the store. By Tram and Tien's facial expressions, she knew something was wrong between them. She knew they were unhappy. Tram became skinner, paler, and sadder; but she was turning into a young, pretty lady. Tien was the same, though sometimes she sees him smiling to himself with no reason. Unquestionably, there was isolation between the couple. They don't talk properly. They argued. They demanded things from each other and set no limits to their needs.

“That's how arranged marriage are in the first place. It will get better,” Mrs, Nguyen told herself, hoping that would come true someday.

“Tram, go try on this dress. It looks marvelous!” Mrs. Nguyen said. Her voice squeaked as she told Tram to do so.

Tram grumbled.

Tram: Why doesn't Tien go try on his suits?

“He'll go later. Right now, we’ll be choosing a dress for you,” Mrs. Nguyen smiled.

Tram: Dangit.

Tram dashed into the fitting room. In just a few seconds later, she was finished.

“It’s too tight!” Tram yelled from the dressing room, “I can breathe!”

“Come on out here!” Mrs. Nguyen sang as she commanded Tram.

“But I can’t walk,” Tram protested.

Mrs. Nguyen left her seat and came into the fitting room.

“Aw, my baby looks so beautiful!” Mrs. Nguyen cried.

Tram moaned.

[Here we go again…]

“Come on out, come on out,” Mrs. Nguyen insisted, “let Tien see your dress.”

Tien looked up and saw Tram as she walked out. His reaction was normal.

Tram: [Maybe he should consider to be a statue for the rest of his life… it’d fit his personalities.]

Tien: What' s special about it? It looks the same as every dress in here to me.

Mrs. Nguyen: What's do you mean 'the same'? It shapes Tram's body perfectly.

Tien: So are others, mom.

Mrs. Nguyen sighed, “boy, you don't know anything about women.”

Tram: [neither do you...]

CHAPTER 15

Tram woke up the next morning with heavy eyes. She has slept only 3 hours.
Her lips kept on mumbling non-Vietnamese words.

“Would you zip your mouth?” Tien asked, annoyed.

Tien's presence finally woke her up to reality.

“It's you,” Tram snared.

Tien: I won't be home tonight so don't freak out when I'm not here. If my parents called, tell ---”

“I told you before, I'm not your maid so don't order me around. And don't worry, I would be very happy without you here,” Tram shot back.

Tien sighed, “do you want me to rape you?”

Tram: You would not ---

Tien: Oh yes, I would.

Tram: You rapist! Taking an advantage of a weak girl is a shame thing!

“You're not weak,” Tien lied, “and I don't think I'll enjoy raping you, but that'll teach you not to mess with me.”

Tram gritted her teeth, then sighed, “what is it that you want to tell me?”

Tien told her the instructions, then left.

Tram suddenly coughed.

[How the heck did I get a cold?]

Fifteen minutes later, the doorbell rang. Tram got up from the sofa and opened the door.

“You b*tch”

*Slap slap slap*

Tram was completely shocked by the surprise.

Tram: Why the hell did you slap me?

Trish: You slut! Don't dare asking me that question! Stop acting like you don't know anything. You took Tien away from me. You were the reason why Tien broke up with me. Why did you do that? Was it because you were jealous of our relationship? Or because ---

Tram: Stop this bs, ok? You people are making me sick. I didn't do anything! I don't have feelings for him and neither does Tien! I'm being forced into this freaking marriage that I never wanted and you're saying that I took him away from you? Get real. Stop bothering me! Tien's business is none of mine. Go away! I have enough crap.

Tram slammed the door.

“You better watch out! I'll be back!” Trish yelled, then stomped off.

Tram sighed. She touched her cheeks. Her face was burning hot from Trish's slaps and her cold.

[I lied, didn't I? I like Tien. Face it, Tram. You're falling in love with him. But am I the reason why Tien broke up with Trish? That couldn't be. Tien always acts cold toward me.]

CHAPTER 16

The house was silence when Tien got home. He quietly opened Tram's door and saw her lying on the bed.

Tien: Are you alright?

Tram: Yea, why?

Tien: You look pale.

Tram: I'm (cough) fine (cough).

Tien sighed.

Tien: You caught a cold, didn't you? Jeez, you're always the one who's bringing germs into this house. And what's with the red cheeks?

Tram: Nothing, just leave me alone...

Tien: Can you walk? You can still cook, right? I'm starving.

Tram: Leave me alone...

Tien: Cook something for me first, then I'll leave you alone.

Tram: Jerk! Do you have a heart? YOU should cook something for me!

Tien smirked, “I don't cook for you.”

Tram: Well, I don't cook for you either.

Tien: Why not? You're my fiancée, aren't you? That's your duty, to take care of your future-husband.

Tram: Future-husband my ax. Go order something instead of ordering a sick person around.

Tien: Whatever, I'll order one for myself then.

Tram: Well... what about me?

Tien: What about you? You don't need to eat. You're sick. Fast food is not good for you. Cook some soup for yourself.

Tram: Bastard. How do I cook when I'm sick?

Tien: I don't know. Bye.

Tien gritted his teeth, and then shook his head as he walked outside the apartment.

[Ahh dangit, why do I have to be like that when I'm around her?]

Tien drove the car away from the apartment and immediately went into a pharmacy store to buy tablets. Inside his mind, he was extremely worried. He can't stand looking at her, being sick and looking as if she would fall and stop breathing any moment. Though his feelings were like that, he would never admit that he cares for Tram.

-beep beep beep- cell phone

Tien looked at his cell phone's screen and saw Andy's name. He smiled. Tien and Andy have been friends since they were little boys. Their fathers were best friends since childhood too. During these last five months, Andy has been gone to the United States for business.

Andy: What's up, my brother?

Tien: Dude, are you home?

Andy: I just got home. I'll have to leave this house later. My mother's been yelling at me for losing weight. It's ridiculously annoying.

Tien laughed, “you should've went straight to your apartment.

Andy: Yea, I regretted for going home.

Tien: But you shouldn't be following your dream girl too much.”

Andy: What “dream girl”, you crackhead?

Tien: Hey, I'm just saying. But seriously, don't overwork yourself.

Andy: I'm not. I just made some agreements with other companies about a new product that will be coming out next year. The company made several samples for customers and they liked it. It's great. I'm glad that all my hard works paid off. Oh,I forgot, how's your fiancée? Are you guys doing good? But let me guess, you guys fight all the time right?

Tien: ...

Andy: That's just how you are, Andy. I don't know about her, but I know all the girls that you went out with can't stand you more than 3 weeks. All of them except...

Tien: [Diem]

Andy: Anyways, I can't wait to meet her. So do you want to go to a club tonight? I'm sure your fiancee won't care since your best friend just came back. I've been doing too much crap. It's insane. I need someone to drink beer with.

Tien: Um, I'm not sure if I can go. I think I'll be busy tonight.

Andy: Ahum, are you having an appointment with a girl tonight or something?

Tien: Stop joking around.

Andy laughed.

Tien: I just need to finish doing some paper work that are do tomorrow.

Andy: What paper work?

Tien: Just paper... you know...

Andy: What?

Tien: Paper work! Look, I gotta go. I'll see you some time tomorrow. Bye.

Andy: But---

When Tien got home, Tram was sleeping like a puppy. It was raining hard outside. He silently walked into the kitchen and made soup for Tram. Tien accidentally burned his left index finger as he handled the pan down onto the floor.

When Tien came into the room, Tram was having a nightmare. She moaned; her body shaked as her face uncontrollably filled with sweats. Tien tried and wiped them but her body slowly became as cold as ice. Her teeth clattered as she mumbled for help.

“Help, please help! Mom, don't go! Mom, don't leave me! I'm cold... I'm cold...”

Tien turned the temperature up as high he could think would help Tram. For an hour, Tien sat beside Tram, continuously listening her desperate calls for help.

“I can't stand this anymore,” Tien said to himself.

Tien got into Tram's bed and hold her tightly into his arms. She was so thin that he thought he could wrap his arms around her body two times. He let his own warmth transfer into hers. They breathe against each other. Tram holded Tien's hands as she slowly absorbed the heat from Tien's. For the next three hours, Tien couldn't sleep. His heart was beating so fast that he thought he would die. It was all because of Tram. Whenever he's close to her, his heart feels this way. It's strange how his heart has change since he met Tram. What would he feels when he sees Diem again? He doesn't know.

After Tram's fever went down, Tien left the bed, afraid that Tram will kill him if she knows what he did. He threw away the soup that he cooked, seeing that it has turned cold.

CHAPTER 17

“Here, drink this,” Tien gave her two tablets with a cup of water.

“Thanks,” Tram weakly said. She took the tablets and tossed them into her mouth, letting it slowly draining down her throat. Tram suddenly noticed the burn from Tien's index finger. She gazed at him. Tien glanced back.

“What happen to you? Where did you get that from?” Tram asked, pointing her hands at his finger. Tien moved his injured hand from her sight.

Tien: Oh, that, I---I accidentally hit my finger with a dictionary.

Tram: How did it get that bad?

Tien: I don't know...

Tram: But it doesn't look like you got hit by a book... it looks like---

Tien: Oh well, I'm all better now. There's no need to worry about it now.

Tram: But--

Tien: It's fine.

Tram: Ok... Again, thank you.

Tien: No problem, that's the best I can do.

Tram: So---

Tien: Be careful not to get sick next time.

“How many times do I have to say sorry to you, huh?” Tram glared at Tien, “it's not really my fault that I'm like this.”

Tien: Really? Then whose fault?

Tram: ... the weather.

Tien cracked up laughing, “right.”

Tram: Stop laughing. Do you think it's fun being sick?

Tien: I don't know. Why do you get sick all the time then?

Tram: It's not my fault!

Tien: Whatever. I'm gonna go to work now. Don't go anywhere, understand? You better not bring any germs in here anymore. You'll be in big trouble if you do.

“Like I would listen to you,” Tram said to herself.

Tien: Do it and you'll see what I would do to you.

Tram pouted.

After Tien left, Tram watched TV. None of the channels interested her.

[Stupid romance dramas, they're so useless to watch.]

*Ring ring ring*

“Who the hell's calling me? Hello?!” Tram irritatingly said.

Andrew: Hey Tram! This is Andrew.

Tram: Andrew? Hey, long time no talk, buddy. (cough)

Andrew: Tram? You aight?

Tram: I caught a cold (cough).

Andrew: What?! Did you go to the doctor?

Tram: No, I didn't go. It's just a light cold. I'll be fine.

Andrew: What you mean 'fine'? You get sick every year during this time, and every time, I had to persuade you to go to the doctor. Does that bastard even know you're sick?

Tram: Yea, he knows.

Andrew: Then why the hell didn't he bring you to a doctor?!!

Tram: Andrew, calm down! I told him I didn't want to go. (cough)

Andrew sighed. He knew Tram would be stubborn like that. Tram never wanted to go to doctors since she was scared of needles and the smell of hospitals...

Andrew: How are you feeling?

Tram: Good. What about you?

Andrew: Just great. I'm calling to tell you the good new.

Tram: What is it?

Andrew: I'm going to Vietnam on November 30th to see my relatives, so I'll be able to see you too.

Tram: Oh really? That's great! I can't wait to see you!

Andrew: Haha, alright. I gotta go now. Take care of yourself, will you? Get well soon. Bye.

Tram: Bye.

As Tram lye on the couch, she thought about Andrew. She can't wait to see him. Though they have been separated, their friendship was still firm. If she told Tien that Andrew's coming, what would Tien do? He would get mad, she thought. Last time Tien and Andrew met each other, they were acting like vital creatures.

[I'll tell him later. I don't care if he gets mad. It's not his business anyway.]

Tram closed her eyes, and then slowly fell asleep.

CHAPTER 18

October 23, 2004

As Tien sat down for dinner, Tram neatly laid down the napkins, silverwares, and dishes on the table. Outside was raining hard. Hundreds of heavy rain fell down from the sky, making loud noises on the rooftop. Windows were banging on the wall and sounds of thunders were rooming around the apartment. Tram looked out from inside the house and whimpered.

[I want to go outside. I haven’t been out in a long time. Stupid Tien, he’s been keeping me inside for more than a week now. All I do is cook and clean around the house. All he does is go out… to wherever it is. I would have gone out without his consent if it has not been raining this last two days. That stupid---.]

Tien: Andy’s back.

Tram blankly looked up a Tien, “who’s Andy?”

Tien: My best friend. He came back from America a week ago.

Tram: Cool.

Tien: He invited us to his birthday party.

[Birthday party? Birthday party! FREEDOM!! PARTY!! MUHAAHAH!!]
“When?” Tram cleared her throat.

Tien: The 27th.

Tram: He asked me to come too?

“No, he told me to tell you to stay home and asked me to go alone,” Tien said sarcastically, “yes, what did you think? That he’d really say that when you’re my fiancée?

“How would I know what he thinks? I’ve never met him before,” Tram mumbled.

Tien: It doesn’t matter if you know him or not. Let’s eat.

Tram sat down.

Tram: Easy, will you? I didn’t say anything bad about him. Don't get mad over such a stupid thing.

Tien: I'm not mad.

Tram: Yes, you are.

Tien: No, I'm not.

“Oh well, if you're not mad, then I must be crying right now,” Tram jokingly said.

Tien: ...

Tram: How long have you guys been friends?

Tien: Really long.

Tram: Just like Andrew and me huh?

Tien ceased eating and looked up at Tram. Tram gawked back.

Tram: What?

[Uh oh, forgot. I mentioned Andrew...]

Tien: I thought you guys are a couple.

Tram: Well… we are, but we’re also friends.

Tien: It’s either friends or lovers. There are no both.

Tram: I have no problems being both.

Tien: What the heck? You have to decide whether you guys are friends or lovers! Friends or lovers!

Tram: It’s none of your business, ok?

Tien: Then why did you bring up his name?! I don’t like that guy at all!

Tram: I didn’t ask for your opinion about him.

Tien: I don’t care! Just don’t say his name in front of me.

Tram: Alright, I won’t! Jeez.

Silence….

[Ahh!! I'm frustrated! Why did I get mad so easily? Dangit. Why does she makes me mad all the time. She'll get suspicious if I just blow all my anger at her just because of stupid stuff. You're so dumb, Tien. What's wrong with you? Change the subject... change the subject... change the subject...]

Tien: I’ll ask my mother to drive you to go shopping tomorrow for Andy’s birthday party.

“No need, I have enough dresses in the closet,” Tram said, feeling sick of the food.

Tien: You’re going tomorrow.

Tram: You know I hate going shopping.

Tien: You know my mom loves shopping. She told me she wanted to spend some time with you. I can’t stop her, can I?

Tram exhaled noisily.

“So… does Andy have a girlfriend?” Tram said as she mixed her food up, trying to make it tasty, but it didn't seem to work.

Tien: Why?

Tram: Why? Why are you asking me ‘why’? I’m just curious. He’s your closest friend. Shouldn’t I be asking this kind of question since I’m your freaking fiancée?!

Tien: Hey, don’t yell at me. What kind of woman yelling at people whenever she likes?

Tram: It’s because you’re not answering my questions but you kept questioning me back.

“You’re an impatient person. How did I end up with you anyway?” Tien heaved a sigh, but inside, he was laughing with all his might. Tram’s too funny to be really angry at.

“How did I end up with you? You think I like living with you?” Tram smirked, “the way you walk makes me want to puke.”

Tien grinned, “the way I walk? What’s wrong with my walk? And is that the only thing you notice about me?”

Tram scratched her head, “your walk looks weird.”

Tien: Weird? How weird?

Tram: I don’t know. It looks like you got shot on the right knee or something…It's like this...

Tram stood up and demonstrated “the walk”. Her legs seemed to be working unproperly, so unlike Tien's way.

Tien let out a deep sigh.

[This girl’s complementing way too much…]

Tram: And why do keep on spiking you hair? It doesn’t match you.

Tien: I’m sorry but girls like my hairstyle.

Tram broke out laughing, “they must be crazy then! I don’t get how girls are able to stand with your attitude! It’s crazy.”

Tien: You’re so dull.

“I'm sorry that below your intelligent level,” Tram barked at him, “but I used to rank 10th in my class. It’s because of my parents not letting me go to college that I didn’t get enough education.”

Tien: Why didn’t they let you go?

Tram sighed, “do you have to ask? Cause I’m being forced to marry you, that’s why, you dim-witted.”

“Oh… sorry for putting you through all the trouble,” Tien said, looking down at a bowl of soup. He hoped Tram would take it like nothing happened.

Tram was way beyond horrified, “whoa, what’s with the look? Dude, you’re scaring me. Do you have a cold? Do you need to go rest?” Tram acted polite but she was actually making fun of him.

[She’ll never get it even when I’m telling her the truth. What’s the use of telling her?]

Tien: Never mind.

“Seriously, what’s wrong with you lately? You’ve been acting a little bit strange,” Tram narrowed her eyes as she looked at Tien. Tien avoided her eye contact.

Tien: Nothing.

Tram: [Hmm, something’s not right… why did he broke up with Trish?]
But why did you---Alright, fine.

Tram stood up and went to the sink, putting the dishes away. Tien peeped up at Tram.

[She doesn’t even know…]
